STAYING CURIOUS When a person suffers an injury because of the wrongful conduct of another, it is our job to investigate the facts and tell our client’s story to obtain justice. To fully tell a client’s story requires a keen sense of curiosity. We need to ask many questions to understand what has been taken away because of the injury. Mom would say, “Go get the encyclopedia,” and we would go to the bookshelf and retrieve the “S” volume, and together, we would look up “skunk” and find not only the answer to the question but also a wealth of other information.
As the years went by, those encyclopedias traveled with us when our family moved from the city to the country. The bindings became a bit worn and the pages tattered. Somewhere along the line, with the technological leaps forward, we got our first computer. The encyclopedias started to collect a thick layer of dust. It wasn’t that the knowledge contained in those books was no longer accurate, it was just that there was so much more knowledge available, and it became easier and easier to access. Although I have nostalgic memories of my brother and I pouring over a volume of the encyclopedia to look up whether a snake we found on the farm was venomous, I feel joy about the waning of the encyclopedia.
