Message from the DONM Tracey Gray, Director of Nursing and Midwifery, RNSH

The last few weeks have been eventful to say the least. As is the case for our entire community, the hospital has been challenged by 2 CoVID - 19 exposures resulting in the lockdown of 5 wards— 6B, 7B, 7F, 8B and 9A for a 2 week period. The staff of these wards have risen to the challenge in ways I have come to expect of the nursing staff at RNSH. Ably supported by our Infection Prevention and Control team all staff swung into action and patiently and professionally managed the situation. Whilst 120 permanent nursing staff were required to self - isolate for 2 weeks, there were only 2 transmissions to other staff and no transmissions to any of our patients which s testimony to the skills of the remaining staff in these wards. What has also been very uplifting is the generosity displayed by staff from other units, many of whom offered to work overtime in the affected wards to cover the many vacancies left by staff in isolation. I would like to extend a heart felt thank you to all nurses who worked shifts in the affected wards to help out. It is very much appreciated by myself and your colleagues in these wards. Please also be mindful of even the mildest of symptoms and stay at home and get tested for CoVID - 19 if you do have symptoms. The Delta strain of the virus is circulating in our community and is far more infectious than previous strains. Your wellbeing during this time is paramount. Ensure you remain connected to others during the city lockdown, eat well and exercise regularly. Skin care for your face is also important. The CEC guide to doing so has been circulated, however is also available on their website. It is a good

common sense guide.

P2/N95 Mask fit testing is an initiative that will gather pace over the coming weeks. Most of the Risk Level 1 and 2 staff have been fit tested. Fit testing for Risk level 3 staff has also commenced. There will be clinics offered every week. We will advertise these and we encourage you to book in for your fitting. Once fitted for a particular mask you will receive a card from the fit tester with your nominated mask identified so that you may show your manager who will then ensure the right mask for you is available. Finally, the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards acknowledge the passion, dedication and amazing contribution that nurses and midwives have on the health outcomes of patients, women and families across NSW. In 2021 the awards will include 6 local health district and specialty network - nominated awards, one consumer - nominated Healing Heart award and one colleague nominated Healing Heart award. A number of our talented staff have been nominated. Finalists will be announced on July 19. Good luck to everyone.

Stay safe and thank you again.

NEW BEGINNINGS FOR EAP The NSLHD EAP welcomes a new external provider. As of Tuesday the 1 st of June PeopleSense by Altius is the new external provider working collaboratively with the internal team to provide EAP support to all NSLHD employees. FYI the contact details for all the providers are in the contact flag at the bottom of the page. As the NSLHD EAP transitions from the previous external provider Converge International to the new provider PeopleSense , we wanted to ensure that no one is adversely impacted by the changeover. Consequently all urgent crisis callers will be supported by the provider that is contacted, be it the internal EAP or one of the external EAP providers. If anyone calls Converge International on or after the 1 st of June to access non-urgent support they will be redirected to the internal EAP team and the new external EAP provider. Where the person is already accessing support from Converge International they will have the option of completing the support by the 31st of July, or changing over to either the internal EAP team or the new external EAP provider PeopleSense . Transition arrangements. What support does EAP provide and to whom? To ensure all employees are able to access the support they need to manage their work and personal challenges, the EAP provides many avenues of support including crisis support, individual support, groups support and manager support. Immediate household family members are also able to access individual psychological support in an effort to ensure our employees are well supported in all aspects of their lives. Access. Appointments can be made via telephone or email. Urgent or crisis support is available 24/7, 365 days per year and the access options include face to face, telephone and video call sessions to ensure immediate support can be provided. Employees can also select the gender of the counsellor they require and select an office in a location most convenient to them. Specialised support is also available to ensure employees feel both comfortable in accessing support and understood, regardless of what their concerns are.

Additional options.

In additional to the normal broad range of support provided by both the internal and

external EAP providers, PeopleSense provides some additional services including Nutrition, Wellbeing, Individualised exercise, Career redirection, Career Coaching, Financial, Resiliency and Manager support. Please discuss these services and terms of access before deciding to progress.

Give EAP a call. If you need skill development, troubleshooting or just a friendly, safe place to work out what you are dealing with and how you want to progress, give EAP a call.

EAP is here to help all of us work and live well.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and Red Apple Day was on the 16 th June 2021. Ward 8B (Gastroenterology, Upper GI and Colorectal surgery) organised a fundraising event on Tuesday 15 th June 2021 to raise awareness of Australia’s second deadliest cancer and raised funds for the leading community-funded charity, Bowel Cancer Australia, dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, re- search, quality treatment and the best care for everyone affected by bowel cancer. Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

There were displays of information booklets, educational and fact sheet posters for visi- tors, patients and staff. Goods were baked by Ward staff; Portuguese tarts, carrot cakes which were sold as a whole before 9am, po- omoji cupcakes, cookies with “ We give a crap” stamp, Krispy Kreme donuts with rasp- berry jelly to imitate stoma and the best of all cupcakes made into a Bristol Stool Chart displaying all types of bowel motions with type 3 being the most popular ones. Also there were Bowel Cancer Awareness ribbons and wristlets and raffle tickets for everyone to get a chance to win big hamper boxes full of goods. Baskets full of the Red Apples were also for sale which unfortunately, was- n’t very popular.

Bake stall and raffle ticket sale were very successful raising more than $2000 by the end of the day. All funding was donated to Bowel Cancer Australia to support them and to appreciate their commitment in raising awareness of Bowel Cancer around Australia.

A huge THANK YOU and congratulations to everyone who has participated and made contributions to the fundraising day. We look forward to next year’s Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and Red Apple Day.
