Treatment Changed Our Dental Assistant’s Life ‘When I Was 10, I Had a Root Canal’

Hi everyone! I’m Jenn, a dental assistant at Robinson Dental, and I’ve been with the practice for nearly seven years. If you’ve ever needed emergency, same- day treatment, we’ve probably met! I work hand-in-hand with all our doctors to treat any patients scheduled same-day. On a daily basis, I hop room to room, assist doctors with treatment, and meet new people all the time. Many people learn oral health is important just a little too late — and, while I’ve aspired to be in the dental industry since a young age, I’m no exception. When I was 10 years old, I had a terrible cavity that required a root canal. It was an extremely scary experience. I never had a cavity before, but I hadn’t gone in for my first cleaning until around that time. After that experience, I never wanted to feel so vulnerable and fearful again. Not long after my root canal, my parents and I were sitting on our back deck at home. They asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” They started listing different careers, from law to business. Then, they said, “You could go into the dental field and be a hygienist.” It was like a bolt of lightning! I immediately knew that’s what I wanted to do. It might seem crazy to want to be in the dental field after going through intense treatment at a young age. But I knew I wanted to help people. What better way to help people than to guide them through the same scary experiences I’ve had? I love working at Robinson Dental because we are super focused on patient care. Our whole team is invested in helping patients feel comfortable, whether it’s crafting our “comfort menus,” providing pillows or movie goggles, or anything else we can do to help make a difference. Being in the dental chair can be unsettling for a lot of people. It’s so rewarding to hear patients say, “Wow, I’ve never felt comfortable at the dentist like I do here.”

The hospitality of our team extends inward, too. I love how much the girls care about each other here! Even though we all have our own stress going on outside of work, we never bring it to work. I know my team is always going to be there for me, no matter which location I’m working at. That’s huge. Even when I’d left for a year to work closer to home, I missed my work family so much. Nowhere else felt the same! The most rewarding part of my job is helping nervous patients complete their treatment. Getting through it can feel like such a battle. But I am right alongside them and cheer them on every step of the way. When my

patients get their smiles back, it makes me smile, too. I feel like I really helped make a difference in someone’s life. Now that I have a 1-year-old daughter, I can’t wait to help her to feel comfortable at our offices, too.

Outside of work, my daughter is my whole world. I spend all the time I can with her! I also enjoy outdoor activities, such as hunting or traveling to our cabin in the upper peninsula. Fun fact: For three years, before I decided to be a mom, I used to play basketball for Grand Rapids Community College. If you ever want to chat about the outdoors or basketball, and you see me around, I’d love for you to say, “Hi”! See you around the office. -Jenn Lofts

Benefits of Powdered Green Tea — And Risks Matcha is an incredibly tasty, high-quality powdered green tea that has swept the food scene across the globe. It flavors popular hot teas, lattes, bubble teas, milkshakes, and even sweet breads and desserts. But is it worth the hype? Let’s find out. Reap the benefits. Matcha can increase your intake of antioxidants, which may help prevent cell damage and It’s Nice to Matcha

even lower your risk of several chronic diseases. Green tea extract is a well-researched ingredient commonly used for weight loss, and matcha may have a similar effect. Green tea’s properties are especially helpful at promoting good liver health. Additionally, matcha has a concentrated amount of caffeine — with an added bonus, if you’re caffeine wary. Matcha contains a compound called L-theanine, which alters the effects of caffeine to promote alertness and prevents an energy crash after caffeine’s effects wear off. Avoid the risks. Unfortunately, despite matcha’s exceptional health properties, it’s often used in not-so-healthy drinks and foods. If you consume matcha, avoid adding a lot of sweeteners. Excessive sweetener will cancel out the benefits. So, buy a bag for yourself and stir a small amount into a cup of hot water — you might be surprised how tasty a simple cup of hot matcha with very few additives can be!

What’s matcha, anyway? Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder that has a strong and earthy tea flavor. For most teas, you steep the leaves in hot water. However, with matcha, you put the powder directly into water to create a hot, foamy drink. It’s processed from relatively young tea leaves and pairs well with sweet flavors. That’s why you’ll find matcha in sweetened drinks and desserts on most menus. Here’s a quick nutritional breakdown. On its own, matcha has no sugar or added ingredients. Two grams of matcha contain about 5 calories, 1 gram protein, 1 gram carbohydrates, 1 gram dietary fiber, 0.36 milligrams of iron, 1.2 milligrams vitamin C, and 200 international units of vitamin A. The most surprising numbers here are fiber and vitamin A, which are both 4% of your daily value. Importantly, matcha has a high level of antioxidants — specifically, catechins. It’s estimated that matcha may have up to 137 times more catechins than other forms of green tea.

Can I Get Single-Tooth Implants? KNOW YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS

A misconception I’d like to clear up is that you can only replace an entire arch with dental implants, similar to full dentures. This isn’t true. Our dentists can actually replace just a single tooth with an implant. You should never be left missing a tooth for long, and here’s why you should start smiling with confidence in no time.

The sooner you replace a missing tooth, the more likely you’ll be able to completely avoid the situations we described above.

How to Qualify for Single-Tooth Dental Implants To be a candidate for a single-tooth dental implant, you must have enough bone density in your jaw to support the titanium rod. A dental implant is essentially a prosthetic tooth root made out of a titanium alloy. This exerts pressure on your jaw to prevent bone loss in the long run. It also provides a sturdy, long-lasting foundation for an abutment and dental crown. If you don’t have sufficient bone density in your jaw, our implant dentists may recommend a bone graft to augment the tissue you already have. This will provide any future dental implants the support they need to last you a lifetime. It’s preferred that you be a non-smoker in order to undergo a single-tooth dental implant procedure. Smoking inhibits your body’s natural ability to heal itself after dental implant surgery.

Why You Should Replace a Missing Tooth A missing tooth has more consequences on your oral health than you may initially realize. As soon as you lose a tooth, your body starts to absorb the minerals in the bone surrounding the empty socket to use elsewhere. While you may not notice the effects of bone loss at first, over time jawbone deterioration can lead to a condition called facial collapse. Facial collapse alters the shape of your facial profile so it appears more sunken, which can add years to your appearance. It’s also worth mentioning that the teeth adjacent to the empty socket may start to drift toward the open space over time. This makes your teeth crooked and can also increase your risk for further tooth loss.

In general, most people are candidates for dental implants. To know for sure, give our offices a call. You can make an appointment today!

Thanks for Supporting a Child’s Smile!

Thank You for Your Help! IN JUNE, WE RAISED $5,668 Not everyone is lucky enough to be born with a naturally formed smile. Unfortunately, the expense of dental surgery can prevent children born with cleft lip from experiencing one of their own — until your donations rolled in. Last June, in honor of National Smile Month, we fundraised to help purchase cleft lip and palate operations for those in need. You came through with over $5,668 for the cause! Thank you so much for all your support and for brightening the smiles of children everywhere.

This August, we will be fundraising to support local veterans — plus a unique discount for veteran patients. ALL veterans and active military will receive 10% off any services during the month of August!

Why fundraise for veterans? Many veterans lose out on opportunities to get education and develop civilian careers. This fundraiser will help give them the resources they need to survive everyday life and, in small part, thank them for their sacrifices.

Don’t forget — Sept. 9 is our Free Day! Underserved members of our community who cannot afford regular dental care are highly encouraged to attend for free cleanings. Veterans will get priority care.

If you want to partake in the next fundraising event, you can give monetary donations (matched up to $5,000) or refer your friends and family to our practice — we’ll donate $25 in your name. The last day to contribute is Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022.
