Hi, friends! I’m honored to be featured in this month’s newsletter. I’ve worked in the dentistry field for over 17 years, but I’ve never worked anywhere like Robinson Dental. For the past year and a half, I’ve been a treatment coordinator at our Wayland location. I help patients check their insurance coverage, pull the best estimates, review payment options and plans, schedule the next appointment, and follow up with patients who may have questions. I help ensure their treatment journey goes smoothly. As a Wayland local, it’s a great feeling to assist patients who live in the same area that I do. However, my ability to help Robinson Dental patients feels especially unique, thanks to how our practice operates. As a large office, even if a doctor takes a vacation (which they should!),

our practice doesn’t have to shut down. We can continue serving patients that need their routine cleanings, treatments, or even emergency procedures. I can easily coordinate with patients, knowing that we always have staff ready to treat any walk-in or emergency patients. Long before a patient calls me, though, I know how terrifying it can be to require any kind of treatment. And, sometimes, our patients require a lot of treatment. One of the most common things I hear from patients is, “I don’t think we can afford this.” The greatest cost, however, comes at the expense of a patient’s health. I often hear this about tooth implants, because many people assume they’re supposed to have dentures. However, implants are the healthiest thing you can do for your mouth after tooth loss. Implants actually prevent bone loss in your jaw! With extracted teeth, there’s nothing holding your bone ridge to keep it stable. That means your jaw’s bone ridge (which holds up your lower teeth) starts to dissolve and gets shorter and shorter. Eventually, you can become incapable of holding a denture. My father is 77, but he lost a tooth when he was 18. It continues to affect his oral health. But, with tooth implants, the impact of tooth loss is significantly decreased. For example, you won’t experience bone loss, and you can grow old without ever needing to wear dentures. That’s why permanent options, such as implants, can improve your health for decades. I’m lucky to say that getting people the treatment they need isn’t just a personal mission. It’s a company mission. We help people with all types of income to create treatment plans that work for them. We also do a free day once per year. For

individuals in the community who can’t afford regular teeth cleanings, extractions, or fillings, we perform those services on that day without a fee. It’s very fulfilling to work at Robinson Dental. At the end of the day, I love helping patients, and our team truly initiates every effort to make a difference in our patients’ care. Whether it’s scheduling time for walk-in patients, helping the community, or celebrating patients on their final day of an extensive treatment plan, it brings a lot of joy to my heart to be a part of it. I’ll never forget the day we brought balloons for a patient on his last day of treatment. He was almost in tears, and gave everyone a lot of smiles. Outside of work, you’ll probably find me kayaking, especially in summer! Rain or shine, I’m always out on the water whenever possible. I even have six kayaks, so I can take anyone with me! If you ever need kayaking tips, I’m definitely the person to ask. NO CAFFEINE NEEDED HOW TO BEAT YOUR AFTERNOON SLUMP

We all know the feeling: Sometime after lunch, you become sluggish, spacy, and unproductive. Many of us instinctively turn to caffeine to power through the rest of the day, but that can cause another crash, not to mention sleep problems. But don’t worry — you aren’t doomed to an aimless afternoon. We’ve compiled expert tips to perk up and carry on with your busy day. Plan your work. All of our bodies have internal rhythms, and by now, you probably know yours. Typically, people peak mid-morning or in the late afternoon. But whenever your productive heights are, plan around them. Complete the detailed, creative, or difficult work during the times when your energy is at its best, and save your “busy work” or repetitive tasks for the lulls when you feel less motivated. You’ll feel better and get more done. Consume healthy foods and lots of water. Maybe you don’t have complete control of your schedule. That’s where a healthy snack comes in. We tend to crash in the afternoon when our blood sugar drops, usually due to consuming

carbohydrates. Eating vegetables, fruit, and protein or fiber-rich foods will help pick up your energy without incurring a future dip. While you’re snacking, drink some water. A 2018 study out of Yale found that even mild dehydration can negatively affect our brains’ ability to function, so don’t let your water bottle sit untouched. Get up and move. You’re not going to get over that slump by sitting in your chair. If you want to beat back fatigue, go for a walk, climb some stairs, stretch, or do some jumping jacks. Researchers have proven that exercise wakes up both your body and your mind. In fact, science says it will do a better job of rousing you than caffeine will. Best of all, it will help, not hurt, your ability to sleep at night. Finally, set yourself up for success by going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting your necessary 7–9 hours of sleep. Our attention ebbs and flows naturally, so none of us can be our best 100% of the time. But along with these other tips, staying well-rested can help you pick up the pace.

Loose Joints & Jaw Throughout pregnancy, your joints are one of the many body parts affected by hormonal changes, and this includes your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects your jaw to the rest of your skull. You may experience jaw stiffness, tenderness, pain, and/or difficulty chewing. If your teeth feel loose or like they’re wiggling, don’t panic. This could be the result of your joints and ligaments loosening up, but it’s always a good idea to check with your dentist to identify the cause.

This might not be common knowledge, but your oral health can take a turn for the worse during pregnancy. With the right steps, however, you can mitigate the damage to your teeth, gums, and overall health. Gingivitis & Periodontitis Approximately 60%–75% of pregnant women will experience gingivitis according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is an early stage of gum disease, the effects of which are reversible; however, this is not true for advanced gum disease known as periodontitis, which can lead to bone deterioration and tooth loss. Tooth Decay Pregnant women also have a higher likelihood of getting cavities in addition to gum disease, and here’s why: morning sickness. Vomiting is more common during pregnancy, which brings up stomach acid that eats away at teeth. Another contributing factor is changes in diet and eating habits, which are extremely common and to be expected during pregnancy. This can expose your teeth to sugary and acidic foods you weren’t previously eating but are now craving. Because your teeth are at a heightened risk for decay, try to avoid foods that are worse for your teeth, if possible.

When pregnant, we recommend seeing your dentist more than once every six months. Your oral health is important to monitor, since it affects the bacteria in your bloodstream (and thus, your baby). Brush your teeth twice a day — but never immediately after vomiting, to prevent brushing away weakened enamel. Rinse your mouth with water, and use fluoride mouthwash. Summer is here, and you know what that means: It’s time to break out the barbecue and meat skewers! INGREDIENTS DIRECTIONS For the Marinade • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 2 tbsp chili garlic sauce • 2 tbsp rice vinegar

1. In a bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. 2. In a reusable freezer bag, combine cubed chicken and all but 1/4 cup of the marinade. 3. Seal bag and massage marinade into the chicken. Chill in the fridge overnight. 4. The following day, preheat the grill to 400 F. Thread chicken and pineapple onto skewers, adding two cubes of chicken for each cube of pineapple. 5. Grill the skewers for 3–4 minutes per side, brushing with the reserved marinade in the final minutes. 6. Serve over rice or with your favorite barbecue sides!

In April, we decided to hold a fundraiser to support Coopersville Cares and Wayland Christian Neighbors Food Bank. With your help, we raised $6,166 for the cause! Thank you so much for all your help, and helping your fellow families — including elderly and young children — receive the food they need to thrive in our community. This June, in honor of National Smile Month, we will be fundraising to help purchase cleft lip and palate operations for those in need. Many of us are lucky to be born with a naturally formed smile. The expense of a procedure can prevent children born with cleft lip from experiencing one of their own. If you want to partake in the next fundraising event, you can give monetary donations (which we will match up to $5,000), or refer your friends and family to our practice — we’ll donate $25 in your name.
