There’s No Place Like Home

Dr. Morales Returns to His Roots

It’s good to be home.

I grew up in Mission, Texas, went to high school in San Antonio, and attended dental school at Texas A&M in Dallas. After spending my whole life in Texas, my family and I left for supposedly greener pastures. But life has a funny way of helping you end up where you’re supposed to be. We’ve been in McAllen since February this year, and it feels great. I got my start at Sabal Dental back in 2018, working under Dr. Drake. After a couple of years, she opened a new office in South Dakota and invited my wife and me to work there. It was a nice adventure, but then we had our first child. Dr. Drake was happy to have me return to the McAllen office, and having a baby is much easier now that we’re back home around family. My wife Kassandra is also a dentist, and she works at another one of Dr. Drake’s locations. So, when I say we’re one big happy family, I mean it literally. Our son James is now 1 year old, and being a first-time dad is exhausting. I was ready for a few sleepless nights, but I didn’t anticipate just how relentless being a father is. Thankfully, James is now mostly sleeping through the night, but the reprieve won’t last very long — Kassandra is pregnant with our second child, due in February! The joys of fatherhood have been worth the sacrifices, and I’m excited to do it all over again. Someone asked me recently why I became a dentist, and the truth is that I’m not sure. Sometimes you just make choices in life and they manage to work out. I do know that I wanted to help people, and being a dentist allows me to do that every day. I’m grateful to meet new people all the time, help them with their health, and contribute to the community. The job keeps me on my toes, too. While we see a lot of similar situations in the office, it’s also common for us to receive random or unique cases. It keeps the job fresh and allows me to learn new skills regularly. Being the only dentist in the office is a real commitment that has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

The staff here is great, and I couldn’t ask for a better team. They’re so compassionate with our patients, and I can tell how much they really care about the people we treat. Every day, I watch them take our patients’ issues to heart and do everything they can to provide the best care possible. It’s hard to find people like that in any industry, so I know I’m lucky to work with these fantastic folks. It feels like no time at all has passed since I left, and I love being back. I’m so excited to see all of my old patients and continue settling into the office. Being here in McAllen just feels right, which goes to show there’s no place like home.
