SALINE COUNTY LIBRARY

AUGUST 2020

Full list of virtual events and the calendar for August! Find out what we’re doing to keep you and our staff safe. Need a new book to read? Check out some new titles! Introducing Pocket Librarian! Learn more on p. 7.

Benton: M, T, Th 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM; W, F 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM; Sa 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Bryant: M, W, F 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM; T, Th 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM; Sa 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM HOURS: *Our buildings are closed to patrons with the exception of computer reservations. Computer reservations can be made by calling (501) 778-4766 for Benton and (501) 847-2166 for Bryant. You can still place materials on hold by using our online catalog and use our curbside pick-up service when they are available. (Hours are subject to change if the board deems necessary as a safety precaution. Any closing information will be posted on our website and social media.)

I want to take this opportunity to give a shout out to all the Saline County Library staff who, despite living through these scary, unprecedented times, saw we had to change how we do things and simply jumped in and did it. Can’t do a storytime in person? Well, do it virtually. Can’t connect with the teens at the library? Get them together online. How about online trivia to give people something fun to do at 8:30 at night? You name it and library staff have stepped up and made it look easy. And here’s to all the staff behind the scenes (instead of behind a camera) who keep those materials going out the doors. With masks and gloves and sanitizer, they’re making sure patrons safely have access to books, DVDs, games and, yes, even those cake pans. Because while libraries aren’t an essential service in the way that hospitals and grocery stores are, we can sure make the pandemic seem more manageable and make isolation a little less daunting. And for everyone who misses browsing the shelves…we understand. There’s nothing quite like it. But please do try our Pocket Librarian service. Library staff absolutely love talking about books—good books, bad books, books they recommend, books you recommend—we all have different opinions and want to talk about them. Having a librarian in your pocket means you get us recommending some of our favorites based on what you like to read. Hopefully an author you haven’t ever heard of. Don’t you love it when you find a new author and have all their books to catch up on? Pandemic? What pandemic? I’m lost in the world of Martha Wells right now. Can’t be bothered by the real world! Stay safe and email or call us if you need help with holds, applying for a card, applying for Pocket Librarian or any other problem.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

New Books to Check Out! Available for curbside pick-up or on Libby and Overdrive

YOUR SAFETY IS OUR TOP priority...

and here’s what we’re doing to keep you and our staff safe .

Masks and Gloves From the time we walk in the building every morning until we leave in the evening, each member of our staff is wearing a mask. Once we open to the public and allow you to come into the library, our staff will be given the option to wear face shields to add another layer of protection for them. We are also requiring staff to wear gloves when handling books; they wear them to get books from the book drop and then put on fresh gloves when fulfilling holds requests for you. We do ask that you wear masks as well.

Social Distancing As much as possible, we have staggered our staff’s schedules so that we can maintain social distancing. Those who can do their jobs from home, are working from home most of the time so that areas such as our break room and offices don’t get too crowded. We also try to keep staff to a minimum in certain areas of the building, such as our circulation desk. Once we reopen, we will be utilizing our sneeze guards and will keep patron/staff contact to a distance.

Quarantining Books Studies have shown that the COVID-19 virus can live on surfaces for up to two days. We’re being extra cautious and allowing our books to quarantine for three days before we check them in and re-shelve them. Once we get books out of the book drop, we put them on a cart (with gloves) and move them to our quarantine location where they are left alone for three days. Because of this, you may notice that items you’ve returned may still show up on your account. Never fear, you won’t be accruing fines for that!

Disinfecting and Cleaning We encourage our staff and any patrons who are coming in for self-service computers, or in the future for browsing to use our new hand sanitizer stations that are placed at entrances and around the building. Our staff have also start- ed disinfecting their workspaces multiple times a day. Our custodial staff cleans the library thoroughly every week. In the event that one of our staff members tests positive for COVID-19, we quarantine the building according to CDC guide- lines.
