M-Th 9:00 AM - 6:30 PM, F-Sa 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library 1800 Smithers Drive Benton, AR 72015 501-778-4766

Mabel Boswell Memorial Library 201 Prickett Road Bryant, AR 72022 501-847-2166

The library has been fortunate to receive a grant through the Arkansas State Library from the Institute for Museums & Libraries of over $100,000. The funds are from the American Rescue Plan Act, and because it is federal grant money, it has specific spending guidelines. Those guidelines include purchasing products and services that help libraries serve their communities during the pandemic. When the SCL staff talked about potential projects, two areas were of great concern: our digital presence and keeping patrons safe. Website Redesign In 2019, we had 318,880 visits to our website. In 2020, it had more than doubled—850,943. Our website is our virtual branch. We had been planning upgrades to it, and then we found out that it wasn’t completely accessible for patrons who couldn’t use a mouse or who had visual challenges. Luckily the grant will allow us to have a complete redesign. Discovery Layer to Catalog One of the other products that we have been wanting for a while is a discovery layer for our catalog. The top three things that library patrons use are the website, the catalog, and eBooks. There is no denying that the catalog is not the easiest thing to use. And yet, it is essential for using the library. If you want to know if we have something, you have to use the catalog or ask a staff person. A discovery layer could make all the difference to your ability to easily find things. Storywalk Another project we’ve wanted is a storywalk. A storywalk is a fun, educational activity that places a children’s story (literally a book taken apart) along a popular walking route in the community. Higher Dividers Between Computers The 8” dividers between our public computers don’t give our patrons near the protection that we would like. We are going to replace them with 20” dividers. This allows us to put all the computers back in the lab at both locations. Mobile Photo Booth Now this one sounds fun, huh? It does have a serious purpose like if you need a headshot for a job application or passport. But we’ll also take it to outside events, and you can try it out. Generator for Mid-Ark Bookmobile The bookmobile needs a new generator, and since we love having the bookmobile stop in Saline County, we are helping them purchase a new one. And Last…More eBooks and eAudiobooks Circulation of our digital collections has skyrocketed! There’s nothing better than being able to download a book 24/7 without leaving your home during a pandemic, am I right?

Sincerely, Patty Hector

Join the Seed Library! What is a Seed Library? A Seed Library is a collection of seeds that we “loan” to you. You can plant and grow your own food, herbs, and flowers at home. It is open from February through August. What are the benefits of a Seed Library? It’s a way to have fun, build community with fellow gardeners, and support people who are new to the world of gardening. Seed Libraries also preserve rare, open-pollinated or heirloom seeds and encourage gardeners to save quality seeds that are suitable for your local growing area. How do I sign up? There is no membership fee, and you don’t even need a library card to get seeds. Fil l out a request form online or at either branch, and staff will let you know when your seeds are ready. You can have up to five seed packets a month. Find the form under the Books & More tab on the main menu of our website, then click “Library of Things.” What seeds are available? Available seeds will be different every m onth depending on the growing season.

We have two Seed Library Gardens, one at Mills Park (pictured) and one at Bishop Park. These flowers were donated by Kroger and Cox Family Gardens and are meant to help make our parks more beautiful. Please do not take from these gardens. All seeds for “check out” are available at the library.

Nature Play
