As the Summer of 2021 winds down across New England , we remain focused on finishing strong and putting the final touches on another very difficult year , due to circumstances out of our control , due to the continuing Covid - 19 crisis . The Walk Like MADD Series of in - person events in Connecticut brought us together with many familiar and friendly faces for the first time since 2019 . Although the numbers of participants were far less than what we have typically seen , those that attended were pleased with the experience , enjoyed great weather , and shared poignant moments , as we honored and remembered loved ones lost and or injured as a result of someone making the wrong decision to drive while impaired . We have three remaining walks in New England this fall beginning with Branford , CT Oct . 9th , Johnston RI Oct . 16th , and Boston , MA Oct . 17th . Let ’ s hope we can keep the momentum going as MADD ’ s Signature Events conclude . MADD CT . will also be hosting its annual Law Enforcement Recognition Luncheon and Educational Symposium Sept . 15th at Mohegan Sun . The Men and Women of law enforcement , who work , day - in and day - out in making our roadways free of impaired drivers will be recognized by the more than 250 attendees . National President , Alex Otte , will serve as the Keynote . Alex is a victim herself of an impaired boater . MADD CT ’ s Special Events also include a budget breaking , Golfers Gone MADD event on Sept . 21st at The Farms in Wallingford , and a MADD About Entertainment concert , featuring country artist , Jameson Rodgers on Oct . 15th . The Year concludes with MADD ” s Holiday Campaign “ Tie One On For Safety ” across CT , Massachusetts and Rhode Island .

Spinal cord injuries ( SCIs ) are among the most deadly that someone can sustain . The severity and location of the injury on the spinal cord determine its impact — the higher the damage , the more severe and deadly it is l ikely to be . For example , a cervical spinal cord injury is more l i fe - threatening than a lumbar SCI , although both are l i fe - altering injuries . According to the most recent statistics from the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center ( NSCISC ) , there are estimated to be between 247 , 000 and 358 , 000 people l iving with SCIs l iving in the United States . There are estimated to be approximately 17 , 700 new cases occurring each year — a number that does not include individuals who die at the location of the incident that resulted in the SCI .

With al l of this in mind , U . S . Senate Resolution 533 recognizes the month of September as National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month .
