FEBRUARY 2019
ASK THE OWNER Hear From Jimmy Cayton on Business and Life
she’d probably tell you how I proposed. Our dating anniversary is on Christmas Eve, so after one year of dating, we came full circle to that date. It was the first time both our families had been together, so everyone was there. I had been saving for six months to buy an engagement ring. I bought a dozen roses, and in front of both our families, I got down on one knee and proposed. Not very many people knew it was going to happen, so it was quite the reaction.” Q: Groundhog Day came out in February 1993. What’s your favorite Bill Murray movie? A: “Stripes has to be a frontrunner. I like all the movies he’s in, but John Candy is also great in Stripes as well.” Q: Heat pumps seem to be very common in the area. Is there anything better for our climate? A: “Our area only has a few colder weeks compared to, say, Georgia or Miami. The further north you go, the more you see gas heaters, and the further south you go, the more you see electric. Electric is not efficient. It uses twice the electricity as an air- conditioner. Some parts of old Orlando
will actually run oil burners from the '50s, and those are a pain.”
Q: If you had to leave work with one tool, what would it be?
A: “I have to take my electric multimeter. Much of what we do is electrical, so to diagnose properly, we need to test where there is electricity. Since you can’t see electrical current, the meter is indispensable.” Q: In all your years out in the field, what’s the best work rig you’ve ever owned? A: “The one I have now is amazing. Every time my daughter gets in it, she thinks she’s in a spaceship. It’s a Ram Promaster. The front windshield is gigantic. The engine actually sits over the cab, so it’s in the middle of the car. It’s actually the vehicle of choice for Amazon delivery, so when I pull up to people’s houses, they’ll ask me if I’m delivering their packages." Stay tuned next month to learn all the unique tips and tricks from the team at Service Plus. March is the start of spring, so be on the lookout for some tips to save on your air-conditioning bill.
To grow closer with our clients and develop more meaningful relationships, we wanted to start a series this year called “Ask the Owner.” Each month, we’ll ask Jimmy Cayton or someone at Service Plus AC & Heating some questions on what’s going on in business and life. This February has some fun insights, and we’re really excited to share Jimmy’s responses. Q: Since it’s Valentine’s Day, what’s the most romantic thing you’ve done for your wife? A: “We’ve been together for almost 24 years now, so the idea of romance has changed slightly, but if you asked her,

MAN’S BEST … FOX?
Domestication has turned deadly hunters into man’s best friend and, subsequently, internet sensations. Dogs and cats are examples of what can happen after a few thousand years, but they might not remain the most popular domesticated animals much longer. A decades-long science experiment in Russia seems to be close to introducing a new pet to the scene: foxes. In the 1950s, a Russian geneticist named Dmitry Belyaev theorized that dogs owed their friendly
behavior to certain genes. This was a revolutionary idea at the time, and it launched a 60-year science experiment. Belyaev’s team began studying wild foxes, breeding only the foxes that showed the least fear or aggression toward humans. This continued through generations of foxes, long after Belyaev passed away in 1985. By 2004, 70 percent of the Belyaev foxes had reached an “elite” level of friendliness. Today, these foxes wag their tails, learn tricks, play with humans, and love treats! Are these Russian wonders one paw away from replacing dogs as man’s best friend? Not exactly. While Belyaev’s foxes are certainly friendly, they don’t have the same desire to emotionally bond with humans like dogs do. If a Belyaev fox comes into the room, it might greet you by sniffing your leg before going off to relax somewhere else. Meanwhile, any dog owner can tell you how their furry friend wants to be glued to their side at all times. There are around 400 Belyaev foxes in the world today, and while they are tame, they aren’t fully domesticated. Not yet anyway. But if wolves became dogs and wild felines became lazy housecats, it might not be long before foxes earn their place alongside humans. Let’s hope they don’t mind posing for social media pictures.

ORDERING COFFEE JUST GOT EASIER
If you’ve ever visited a Starbucks coffee shop, you’ve likely heard a patron rattle off a drink order that was more specific than your grandma’s pecan pie recipe. For example, they might say, “I’ll take a Grande, four-pump, nonfat, no-whip, extra-hot mocha.” Without missing a beat, the barista scribbles the order on the cup and starts making the drink. Orders like this one are a mouthful for even the most seasoned Starbucks guru, but for deaf people, it can be difficult to even order a cup of black coffee. Adam Novsam, a deaf utility analyst at Starbucks headquarters in Seattle, set out to address that difficulty by heading the launch of the company’s first deaf-friendly signing store. OPERATION The store’s grand opening took place in October in Washington, D.C. Its overall success relies primarily on its purposeful operation and design elements. In 2005, the ASL Deaf Studies Department at Gallaudet University created the DeafSpace Project using design elements, such as space and proximity, sensory reach, mobility, light, and acoustics, to address potential challenges for deaf people. Starbucks’ signing store incorporates these aspects of DeafSpace to make their store more accessible. For customers new to sign language, the store features some high-tech options for assisting with communication, ordering drinks, and receiving
beverages at the handoff counter, including digital notepads and a console with two-way keyboards for back-and-forth conversations.
APRONS All store partners at the signing store are proficient in ASL, whether they are hearing, hearing- impaired, or deaf. However, deaf partners wear special green aprons embroidered with the ASL spelling of Starbucks. What’s more, these aprons were created by a deaf supplier! EDUCATION For hearing customers who aren’t fluent in ASL — even those just ducking in to grab a cup of coffee to go — the signing store offers an opportunity to learn something new. For example, they can learn how to sign a word like “espresso” in ASL merely by reading the chalkboard above the register with the “sign of the week.” Starbucks’ decision to make their product more accessible has benefited thousands of customers all along the East Coast. Hopefully, as time goes on, other corporations will choose to follow suit so we can make a more deaf-friendly society.

ONE FOR THE AGES How Super Bowl XXXIV Made an Icon Out of a Grocery Store Clerk Going into the 1999 NFL season, no one expected anything from the St. Louis Rams. When starting quarterback Trent Green went down with a gruesome knee injury in the preseason, ESPN The Magazine slated the Rams to be the worst team in the NFL that year. With few options, coach Vermeil named a virtually unknown player as his new starting quarterback, humbly stating in a press conference, “We will rally around Kurt Warner, and we’ll play good football.” Five years before his start, 22-year-old Kurt Warner was stocking shelves at a Hy-Vee grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for $5.50 an hour. However, he had amassed a whopping 16 snaps in the NFL prior to taking the reins for the 1999 season, and what proceeded to transpire on the field was utter pandemonium, giving the Rams the nickname “The Greatest Show on Turf.” This improbable season and the resulting MVP award for Warner set the stage for one of the most dramatic games in Super Bowl history. After going up 16–0 against the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, Warner and the Rams looked poised to coast on their way to the Lombardi Trophy, but the late Steve McNair and the Titans had different plans. The Georgia Dome was rocking after two Eddie George touchdown runs, and a field goal brought the Titans level at 16–16, with just over two We live in the golden age of information. The answers to many of life’s questions are just an internet search away. Despite this readily available wisdom, we still have a bad habit of believing health-related myths. Here are three popular health “facts” that are total works of fiction. The 5-Second Rule Keeps Food Safe Obviously germs and bacteria don’t really wait five seconds to pounce, but snatching your chip off the floor fast keeps most of the germs away, right? Not according to a 2006 study published by Dr. Paul Dawson. He found conclusive evidence that when food comes into contact with a contaminated surface, bacteria are transferred immediately. Even one second spent on tile, wood, or carpet is enough to infest your food with salmonella or another serious contaminant. Bottled Water Is Safer Than Tap Water People seeking out safer water alternatives increases the sales of bottled “spring water” each year. However, bottled water is more expensive, bad for the environment, and, as Dr. Morton Tavel of the Indiana University School of Medicine pointed out, over 50 percent of bottled water is just filtered
minutes of play remaining. In response, Warner dropped back and found receiver Isaac Bruce for a 73-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 23–16 with 1:54 left on the clock. But the Titans weren’t done fighting. Quickly moving the ball down the field, Titans quarterback Steve McNair found himself with a third and 5 inside the Rams 30-yard line with 22 seconds left. Scrambling around and fighting off two players trying to pull him down, McNair threw the ball to Kevin Dyson at the 10-yard line. A quick timeout left six seconds on the clock, and the Titans were one play away from tying the game. What proceeded was a play that will be forever known as “the tackle.” McNair found Dyson on a quick slant, and when he caught the ball at the 4-yard line, it appeared a touchdown was imminent. Suddenly, linebacker Mike Jones wrapped the receiver up at the hips. As he fell to the ground with the ball in his hand, Dyson extended his arm, but when he hit the AstroTurf, he was 1 yard short of the goal line. The Rams had pulled off the impossible, earning their first Super Bowl title ever.
THE 5-SECOND RULE WILL MAKE YOU SICK
3 Health Myths You Probably Believe
tap water. The same effect can be achieved with a home filtration system. Of course, if the tap water in your area has been contaminated, bottled water is a safer alternative. However, in most circumstances, bottled water is no healthier than tap water.
Cracking Your Knuckles Causes Arthritis The connection between knuckle-cracking and arthritis came from studies where participants self-reported their habits. Modern medical research has shown these results to be false. The official stance from the John Hopkins Arthritis Center states, “There is no evidence that cracking knuckles causes any damage such as arthritis in the joints.” Still, chronic knuckle-cracking can lead to reduced grip strength, so you might want to break the habit anyway. You’ve probably heard these myths for years, but just because something is common knowledge doesn’t mean it is true. With information so easily available, always take the time to research the facts, especially when it comes to your health.
