n ’ s It’s Your Turn With the Kids Back in School, Consider Orthodontic Treatment for Yourself
It may still be hot out, but summer is over. It was a long and exciting one, with vacations and breaks, fireworks and holidays, and maybe even some time at the beach. But now we’re back to school, and that means the routine starts again: homework, dance, soccer, baseball, and more. The kids will be busy, but what about you? Chances are, you can get back into your routine as well. If you’ve been putting off your own dental care in order to get the kids taken care of — a common practice amongst parents — you should come in during the first week of school for your own checkup. We treat many adults who want a great, healthy smile, and there are a lot of treatment options these days that are attractive to someone who isn’t interested in traditional metal braces.
Maybe you’ve had a little orthodontic care in the past, but your teeth have since shifted. Perhaps your orthodontist back in the day didn’t tell you that you need to wear your retainer regularly. Or maybe you had great teeth in your younger days but have noticed some shifting lately. That happens more often than you might think, especially with the bottom front four teeth. Those teeth are the most prone to rotating, crowding, and other issues that can happen well into adulthood and in a relatively short period of time. Not only can this be aesthetically displeasing, but it also leads to dental disease and eventually bone loss. Just as you only get the one set of teeth, you also only get so much dental bone. Once it’s gone, there’s really no getting it back. And if you can’t properly clean your teeth and gums due to dental
crowding, you’re at real risk for that bone loss as time goes on. Adult options for orthodontic treatment include the ever-popular Invisalign, which works quickly and is very effective, as well as visually subtle. Invisalign won't limit the foods you can eat. Traditional braces are also an option, and we can mount them to the back of your teeth for cosmetic appeal. We want to take care of your winning smile, and we have a lot of ways to do it. Go ahead! Schedule an appointment with us for the first week of school. It’s time to spend some time taking care of yourself, and I guarantee we can give you a smile that’s healthy and beautiful. – Dr. Howard Shullman www.ShullmanOrtho.com • 561.868.5050 • 1

3 Studying Hacks for Successful Students Make the Grade!
Are your kids already sweating exams this semester? Fear not! Combine these tips with a regular studying routine, and they’ll be set for anything their teachers assign this year. Chew On This Not all classrooms allow gum, but those that do offer students a distinct advantage. According to Scientific American, chewing gum increases the flow of oxygen to the areas of your brain responsible for attention and memory. Your student can even coordinate gum flavors with each of their classes. Do they have a biology test coming up? Encourage your student to chew peppermint gum while they study and while they take the test. Their brain will associate the
minty flavor with those plant cell organelles they studied for an hour the night before. Proofread With Google Is your child trying to perfect an essay before a midnight deadline? Be sure they leave time to read their essay aloud! Tom Stafford, a psychologist who studies typos at the University of Sheffield, notes that when we reread our work, “we don’t catch every detail; we’re not like computers or NSA >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
