Scott Kilgore’s Life Transformation Dental Implant Miracle!
MARCH 2022
Scott Kilgore was notorious for never smiling in photos. Even on his wedding day 29 years ago, Scott only mustered a “no teeth” smile for the camera because he was ashamed of his teeth. “I never liked how [my teeth] looked,” Scott said. “Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, it wasn’t a big thing to take your kids to the dentist, so by the time I hit the age of 39, everything started to become loose. I always brushed, took care of them, and it just didn’t feel right.” Recently, all that has changed. In February, Scott finished treatment for dental implants. Working with Dr. Seim Salameh and the Signature Smiles Elyria team, Scott now has a smile that he isn’t afraid to show off and can confidently use. He even put them to the test with the steak challenge! After nine months of preparation, treatment, and care, Scott ate his first steak.

Celebrating with his wife at Texas Roadhouse, Scott sent our Signature Smiles team a video of that proud moment, indulging in every bite with his new smile (scan the QR code to watch!). “It took me an hour to eat that steak,” Scott said. “I was like, ‘This is so good!’”
Scott sought treatment from Signature Smiles in 2021 after his teeth became too wiggly to function. After discussing his options and cost with our team, he decided to start treatment to secure dental implants. Throughout the process, Scott, like most of our patients, became like family, and we were happy to support him through the process. “Jourdan called and checked on me. Ashley called and checked on me! Everyone here is so wonderful,” Scott said. “I’ve told everyone, if you need to go some place, please come here. They treat you like you’re family. They’re just wonderful here.” We were honored to provide Scott with a great experience, but more importantly, we are proud to say we are the creators behind his award-winning smile. Good luck getting Scott not to smile for photos now! Congratulations on your new beautiful smile, Scott. Thank you for allowing us to help you create a smile you can be proud of. Now, go enjoy a big steak!

Chew Your Food! CHEWING IS THE SECRET TO WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
If you have become a chronic dieter, Signature Smiles hygienist Wendi Dopkosky has been researching a phenomenon you may like to know. “I kept thinking, ‘Why is it this person can eat everything they want, and I have a weekend where I kind of let myself eat whatever, and I gain three pounds,’” Wendi says. “It comes down to, the people that have never had to diet and can eat anything they want, digest their food in their mouth before they swallow it.” For the past six years, Wendi has done her own personal research, conducted studies on herself by gaining and losing 10 pounds, and interviewed people to get to the root of this issue. What she has discovered is that those who deliberately chew their food at least 30 times tend to not gain weight.
Wendi also found that those who did chew their food more likely fell within three categories: they have a fear of choking after a traumatic event, they were taught to chew longer as children, or they are someone who prefers to savor their food. Other researchers support Wendi’s findings. A 2011 study published in the National Library of Medicine found that men who were “fast eaters’’ gained more weight than those who were slow or “medium-paced” eaters. Wendi explains that digestion begins in the mouth. The salivary glands near the upper molars can digest carbohydrates, while the glands under our tongues can digest fats. Protein is not digested in your mouth. It is digested in your small intestine, which is why low carb diets work.
So, how can you become a better chewer? Wendi recommends chewing each bite 30-32 times, or until there is no texture left. When Wendi deployed this strategy, she found she would not gain any weight. However, she advises adhering to a healthy diet. Remember, chewing your food properly is not a magical weight loss strategy, but it can be a powerful tool for digestion, not gaining weight, and also to help you enjoy your food.
Please consult with your doctor if you have further questions.

Finally — The Guide to Cleaning Your Gutters
4
Spring is often a welcome relief from the cold, dreary, snowy days of winter, but with every change of the season, a few household chores become necessary to help protect the longevity of our homes. In March, this includes everyone’s favorite: cleaning the gutters.
If you don’t have a ladder — or fear using one — you can search your local hardware store for tall cleaning tools, like leaf-blower attachments that will stretch up to your roof. Once again, you will want a tarp below to catch debris. And anything that does come out of the gutter can be thrown away or composted. NOT DONE YET! Real housing professionals always make sure the job will be easier next time — so don’t skip these crucial steps. After your gutters are clear, spray water into them and watch the downspout. This “test” will determine if every part of your gutter is clear or if there are other concerns you need to address. Then, consider installing “gutter guards” to prevent debris from falling into the gutters. Screens or metal guards will work well, and when it’s time to clean your gutters in the fall, simply swipe any material off the guard!
This season, tackle your gutters with the only guide you will ever need.
THE RIGHT SETUP If you want to be a pro, you should look the part. Dress in “work” clothes, and opt for long sleeves and gloves to protect your arms and hands. Wear sturdy shoes for support, and cover your eyes. Use a ladder that is
extendable and has a strong, sturdy base. It’s always best to have someone hold the ladder for extra support, too. Experts also recommend laying a tarp below your ladder to catch any falling debris. And rather than sticking your hands into the gutters, use a gutter scoop or an old spatula to remove the gunk.
Bonus: Don’t forget to repeat this cycle in the fall!
For more information and guidance, search the online directory at ConsumerReports.org. They offer advice on finding the right gutter guard and give other tips for how to clean your home.
