Brunswick Is Welcoming Signature Smiles Sedation Office!

NOVEMBER 2021

When we first began Signature Smiles, we never intended to grow into a multiple-location practice. In fact, our mission was never location-oriented at all. Our goal was to provide excellent and anxiety-free dental services to our community, but in doing so, we have seen how powerful and great the need for this form of dental care is in our region. With that knowledge, we knew we had to expand our reach. That motivated us to open a second location, and this year, it’s what has led us to open a third location, too! We are very excited to announce that Signature Smiles is opening an office in Brunswick, Ohio, just southwest of Cleveland. We are thrilled to join the Brunswick community, and we believe our emphasis and expertise in creating an anxiety-free environment for our patients through oral, and IV sedation dentistry will fulfill a tremendous gap in our new community. In considering a new location, we found there are many great dentists in the Brunswick area, but there were limited options for those in need of care that catered to their anxieties and fears. That’s how we hope to step up for Brunswick and Medina County. We are aiming for an open date of Jan. 17, 2022, and we will warmly welcome new patients who have once feared going to the dentist. We are confident that we can make your experience comfortable and provide quality oral health care that everyone deserves. Ultimately, though it may be new, this location will foster our same mission that we practice at the Streetsboro and Elyria locations: to provide a comforting, smooth dental experience for all our patients. Can Vitamins Be Customized?

Everyone knows it’s important to get their vitamins. But do people need the same amount of certain vitamins, or does it vary? Some researchers say it varies, so vitamin supplement companies, like monthly vitamin subscription service Care/of, customize their pill offers based on your personal health and/or goals. But do these services actually work? Since supplements aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, how do we know whether their packages contain the vitamins and minerals promised? VITAMINS MAY NOT HELP AS MUCH AS YOU THINK. Johns Hopkins researchers found that for many illnesses (especially heart-related), taking supplements didn’t make a big difference. One study involving 450,000 people found that multivitamins did not reduce risk for heart disease or cancer. Another study tracking the mental functioning and multivitamin use of 5,947 men for 12 years found that multivitamins didn’t reduce risk for mental decline such as memory loss or slowed-down thinking, either. The only exception? Young women. Larry Appel, M.D., director of Johns Hopkins Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, says that supplemental folic acid for women of reproductive age may be helpful. “Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in babies when women take it before and during early

pregnancy. That’s why multivitamins are recommended for young women.” The Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention recommends women of reproductive age to intake 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, and the amount of iron in a multivitamin may also be beneficial. BUT CAN CUSTOMIZED VITAMINS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

If you’re a young woman, or you have a doctor’s orders to get a multivitamin for certain conditions or treatments, the bad news is that right now, hardly any customizable vitamins have a third-party certification for quality and accuracy. If the vitamin or brand doesn’t have ConsumerLab.com, NSF International, or U.S. Pharmacopeia certification, you simply can’t know what you’re getting. So, the best multivitamin is the one designed for your age group with third-party certification. Even if it’s a $10 bottle from Target, it’s likely more effective than what’s trending online.

Introducing Our Brunswick Office Leader! Meet Réchel Hoisington!

We are honored to have so many great, talented, and friendly people working with us at Signature Smiles, and at our new location in Brunswick, Réchel Hoisington will be our office leader! Réchel was born in Medina, Ohio, but grew up in Brunswick. She even went to school there. After graduating from high school, she became a medical assistant. She began working at Signature Smiles because we are a place that specializes in patients that are scared of the dentist. Being scared to go to the dentist is a different form of mental health that people don’t talk about. Like our patients, Réchel is afraid of the dentist herself, so she is able to empathize with our patients’ fears and relate to them on a personal level.

Before coming to Signature Smiles, Réchel worked in psychiatry for a few years and also worked with orthopedic patients who have lost limbs. Réchel has a special place in her heart for mental health due to her past work experience, so she knew that she wanted to lead a team and stick with something that involves mental health. When Réchel is not working, she enjoys spending quality time with her family. She is married and has two children — a 13-year- old daughter and a 6-year-old son. They enjoy spending quality time together with any activities that they can do outside, like bike riding. During her free time on the weekends, she also enjoys boxing.

A LOOK AT WHAT WE ARE LEARNING We’re Committed to Helping Trafficked Survivors

The Signature Smiles Dental team is committed to being more than just a dental practice in our community. We are neighbors and active members of the regions we serve, and in the work we do, we regularly meet people from all walks of life.

At RAHAB, survivors are given a second chance at life. They are provided with mentorships, resources, housing opportunities, and utilities to build healthier lives and receive the support they need to heal from the emotional, mental, and physical trauma that sexual

and physical assault can take from them. The organization also provides educational and training opportunities, much like the presentation our team participated in this fall. The goal for RAHAB is to build a community and network of support that allows trafficking victims to become survivors who can live full, happy, healthy lives. As RAHAB’s

Recently, our team invited Kali from RAHAB: A Ministry of Hope to speak with us about human trafficking, its prevalence in Ohio, and the ways in which we and our community can help. Our goal was to become better providers for trafficked victims and survivors and to raise more awareness in our communities.

One of the most shocking facts we learned was that Ohio is considered a “hot spot” for trafficking activity. With its blend of rural and urban neighborhoods, as well as its prevalence of vulnerable communities — like a high index of immigrant populations — Ohio has become a major state for human trafficking. However, as Kali explained, part of our increased numbers of survivors also stems from our local emphasis and discussions on abolishing human trafficking.

INGREDIENTS • 1 small onion, sliced • 7 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided • 1/4 cup and 3 tbsp flour, divided

• 2 tbsp panko breadcrumbs • 2 shallots, chopped • 8 oz can mushrooms, sliced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 lb green beans, cooked • 3 cups almond milk

DIRECTIONS 1. Set the oven to broil. 2. In a shallow baking pan, combine onion, 1 tbsp olive oil, 3 tbsp flour, and panko breadcrumbs. 3. Broil for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Afterward, preheat the oven to 375 F. 4. In a large skillet, heat 2 tbsp olive oil. Add shallots, mushrooms, and garlic, stirring until tender. 5. In a large bowl, mix mushroom mixture with the cooked green beans. 6. In the same skillet, add 4 tbsp olive oil and 1/4 cup of flour, whisking until golden. Gradually add the almond milk until it thickens, then toss with the green beans. 7. Transfer mixture into a baking dish and cook for 20 minutes. 8. Add onion and breadcrumb mixture on top, then bake for another 5 minutes.
