Here’s my list of top five books that have made an impact on me in 2017: 5. “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” By: Patrick Lencioni 4. “The 12 week year” By: Brian Moran 3. “Principles” By: Ray Dalio 2. “Traction” By: Gino Wickam 1. “The Go-Giver” By: Bob Berg and John David Mann I would love to hear from you... what are your top 3-5 books that have impacted you in 2017? Keep pushing yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually so that 2018 becomes your best year ever! -Lee Sowerbutts
As I reflect back on 2017, it was a year of amazing growth in several areas. We have been blessed to add four additional licensed clinicians and have continued to see steady growth even though our referrals from physicians are down. Our growth continues because of our exceptional staff and returning patients like you. Your willingness to share your experiences with others who are hurting or having physical challenges has made a huge difference. Thank you! As a new year approaches, think about this quote by Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I want to challenge you in 2018 to invest in yourself by reading four to five books.

“I am now back to playing pickleball!” “Following full knee replacement and four weeks of physical therapy, I am now back to playing pickleball! The excellent care and treatment during my physical therapy was key! Their very professional care was consistent and effective. I am very confident in referring other tennis and pickleball players and friends to Village Golf & Physical Therapy. P.S. My orthopedic surgeon was quite pleased and complimentary of the results achieved!” -Jim B.
“The entire staff has always been friendly and understanding.”
“My purpose in coming to physical therapy was to improve my balance. I feel that I have achieved more confidence in being better able to walk without falling. My balance problem is not new, and I have a brace on my right knee. I have difficulty balancing on one foot and am working on that. Also, I know it is up to me to keep exercising and strengthening my muscles. One of the things that kept me coming was the pleasant atmosphere at the facility. The entire staff has always been friendly and understanding. Even though I did not like some of the exercises, I was glad to come and exercise. Thecooperationand friendly interactionamongtheentirestaffwasalwaysevident. They were alert and always able to switch back and forth between clients. If I have need in the future for any physical therapy I will return to Spa City Physical Therapy.” - Gloria O.

Happier, Healthier, MoreActiveYou!
It’s that time of year again, the beginning of a new year when many of us feel compelled to make New Year’s Resolutions. What will be your resolutions towards taking care of your health? Will you set a goal to lose weight, exercise more, eat better and increase your activity level? Unfortunately, such declarations often fail after a month or two. This can often be attributed to two things: a lack of readiness to actually change bad habits and a pattern of setting unrealistic expectations. So what types of resolutions can we make that we’ll actually stick to? If you want to improve your health and increase your energy, here are some simple ways to change your lifestyle for the better. 1. Begin the day with protein. Eating protein for breakfast helps curb your appetite throughout the day and tends to improve your overall diet as well. While you may wind up consuming the same number of calories over a day’s time, you’ll be less tempted by high-fat snacks around dinner time. Keep in mind that there are plenty of plant-based proteins available, including hemp seeds, black beans, almonds, edamame, and pumpkin seeds among them. 2. Limit your drinks. By this, we aren’t only referring to alcohol. Instead, try to cut back on the calorie-laden drinks popular this time of year. Concoctions such as sweetened coffee drinks, sodas, diet sodas and energy drinks can be detrimental to a healthy diet. Focus on a higher consumption of water during the day and to make it easy, keep a glass by your desk or carry a bottle around with you. 3. Try wearable technology. Research shows that people who use wearable technology gadgets such as Fitbits, Garmin, and Withings, tend to stick to their exercise routine more faithfully than those who don’t. With many of them, you can track your heart rate, steps per minute, sleep cycles, and more. 4. Increase Your Range Of Motion. Avoid shortcuts when it comes to exercising. Strive for using the greatest range of motion. This may include making longer lunges, stretching arms more while jumping rope, or leaning over further during yoga. Whatever the case, doing so helps your muscles do more work per rep, which results in breaking down more tissue by the end of your workout. If you have
difficulty reaching a full range of motion, or have discomfort, consult your physical therapist. 5. Reduce fatigue. As anyone who has tried and failed at establishing a regular exercise routine can agree, fatigue is the number one enemy. To help kombat this, drink beet juice. Studies show that it can increase stamina by up to 16 percent. Furthermore, listen to music that keeps you motivated. Listening to the right music can actually expand your blood vessels by 26 percent. Work on a schedule routine that ensures you get enough rest, exercise, and activity. 6. Switch it up. If you’ve been plugging through the same fitness routine day after day, you may notice a reduction in strength gain. To avoid this, try different exercises, working out at different times of day, using different repetitions, or lifting different weights. As 2018 begins to unfold, consider ways to add healthy decision- making to your lifestyle. Remember that putting things off doesn’t get you to where you want to be. We are here to help you reach your goals and achieve a healthy, pain-free lifestyle. Talk to your physical therapist at our practice today, or schedule a consultation to make your 2018 the healthiest yet.

Four Resolutions To Consider For 2018
Make 2018 Your Greatest Year Ever!
1. Be purposeful In everything you do, be focused and strive for purpose in your daily activities. Walk with purpose and people are more likely to respect your time; talk with purpose and people are more likely to listen to you. Make changes today, not tomorrow. If something is important enough to point out a need for change, why wait?
2. Resolve not to be mediocre Strive for excellence, even in how you eat. Use the freshness of the new year as an excuse for avoiding mediocrity. This can be a challenging task because industry markets products and services to the lowest common denominator. Give yourself a needed upgrade and resolve to distance yourself from average.
3. Schedule exercise and stretching Exercise is more effective when it is regular and systematic. It can be difficult to schedule exercise unless time is pre-committed. If you need help with exercise or if you have pain that is holding you back, contact us at Spa City and Village Golf Physical Therapy so we can help you meet this resolution.
4. Mend fences If you decide to repair a rift between you and a friend or family member, it may not be easy and it may happen slowly, so be patient. Let go of your ego and just reach out by phone or email to let them know you want to bury the hatchet. Be sure to accept some of the blame, and don’t fight back if they are not ready. Keep trying!
