enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with your family. It could mean helping decorate for the season at a local nursing home or just spending time with the residents, hearing their stories of Thanksgiving. On a larger scale, I was introduced to a great way to participate in giving that has a global impact. It is called dollarfund, and the goal is to give $1 per month with the goal of 1 million people giving. This means your $1 is able to have an exponential impact as it is added together and 1 million dollars is given each month to heal the sick, feed the hungry, free the slaves, house the homeless, quench the thirsty, and parent the parentless. I have always wished I could do more, give more, and love more. This organization provides an excellent opportunity to reach out beyond our means and have a greater impact. “Serving the many” has never been easier. It’s not about what you or I can do alone, it’s about what we can do TOGETHER. After all, “together” is what Thanksgiving is all about! You can find more information at dollarfund.org. What does the word Thanksgiving mean to you? Maybe it brings memories of turkey and dressing, afternoon football, or family and friends gathered around a large table, reunited! For some it is the annual Thanksgiving day parade, or maybe even the tradition of setting up and decorating the Christmas tree. For others, your mind goes back in time to the Pilgrims and the very first Thanksgiving. So many different thoughts come to mind at the mere mention of the word. But I want to propose a meaning that you may not have considered before. When we break the word apart, we are left with “thanks” and “giving”. The first part of the word seems to fit nicely into our perception of what Thanksgiving is all about, after all, being thankful is at the core of this special holiday; however, the second word, “giving,” may not necessarily be the first idea that pops into our head as we prepare for this special time of year. As it turns out, being thankful is the first step, but it shouldn’t end there. The “giving” portion of the word opens up a whole new way to view this holiday. So what should this “giving” look like? Laken Baldwin, PT, DPT

most recent trip including a three and a half week backpacking vacation across Europe. Laken also enjoys spending time with her close friends and family as well as enjoying the outdoors, going hiking, camping, and riding four-wheelers. Laken is excited to begin her career as a physical therapist and enhance her knowledge and skill set while serving the Hot Springs Village community at Village Golf & Physical Therapy center.

Laken Baldwin is the newest member of the Spa City Therapy team. Laken obtained her bachelor degree at the University of Arkansas where she studied kinesiology and gained a love for learning about the human body and the mechanics of movement. With this love, she went on to earn her degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Central Arkansas, where she recently graduated in August 2017. Laken has most recently accepted a position as a full-time PT at Village Golf & Physical Therapy. Outside of work, Laken loves to travel, with her

Make Mornings Yummy ENGLISHMUFFIN BREAKFAST SANDWICHES INGREDIENTS 6 English muffins, sliced in half 6 large eggs 6 slices Cheddar cheese 6 slices deli ham Salt and freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • Grease 5 ramekins, or a jumbo muffin tin and place on a cookie sheet. • Crack one egg into each ramekin. • Pierce egg yolk with a fork and very slightly beat.

• Season with salt and freshly ground pepper. • Bake eggs for 12-15 minutes or until set. • Remove from oven and allow to cool.

• Run a knife around the edge of ramekin (or muffin tin) to remove eggs. • To assemble breakfast sandwich, layer one half of each English muffin with o slice of cheese, one slice of ham and a cooked egg. • Top with other half of English muffin. • Wrap sandwich in plastic wrap and place in the freezer. • To reheat, place in microwave for 1-2 minutes, or until warmed through.

Being Grateful is Good For You! GRATITUDE AND HEALTH

“We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the pleasures you get from life.”

Feeling thankful can improve your health in both direct and indirect ways. Some research shows that the experience of gratitude can induce a sense of relaxation, improve the immune system, and decrease blood pressure. But grateful people also tend to cultivate better health habits, like eating more nutritious food, exercising, and avoiding risky behaviors. In addition, the optimism that stems from gratitude can create a healing attitude: research shows that people with optimistic attitudes have better outcomes after medical procedures. GRATITUDE AND JOY Robert Emmons, an internationally renowned scientific expert on gratitude, has found that acknowledging the good in life has a tendency to amplify positive emotions, such as joy and contentment, because it helps us slow down. “I think gratitude allows us to participate more in life,” he says. “We notice the positives more, and that magnifies the pleasures you get from life.” Consider the last time you had a good cup of coffee—did you pay attention to the warmth of the cup on your hands, or the feeling of pleasure as you took the first sip? It’s easy to ignore these small moments of positivity in our day as we rush from one activity to another, but stopping to appreciate them makes them more powurful.

GRATITUDE AND RESILIENCE Practicing gratitude can also make you better equipped to handle the difficulties of life that inevitably arise. In fact, according to Emmons, it’s an essential part of the process of healing from trauma. Even despair can be mitigated by the experience of appreciation for the good, however slight it might be. Many survivors of the Holocaust, when asked to tell their stories, remember most strongly the feelings of gratitude for food, shelter, or clothing that was offered to them. This sense of thankfulness for the small blessings helped them maintain their humanity despite experiencing a horrific tragedy. Many people with life-threatening illnesses also report decreased distress and increased positive emotions when they practice gratitude. Recent MRI studies have mapped the gratitude circuitry in the brain, which activates a sense of reward, fairness, and decision-making— all aspects that help facilitate survival and post-traumatic growth.
