STERN Law News BAJI: Fighting for Justice EVERY HUMAN DESERVES EQUALITY FEB 2021

Immigration news and stories mostly center on Latinx and Hispanic communities. Yet there are so many more backgrounds and experiences that must be championed to appreciate a full picture of the national fabric woven by immigrants. In recognition of Black History Month, we spotlight the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI). BAJI is an organization that provides a voice for Black immigrants fighting against racial prejudice and advocates for equality and justice. HISTORY By the mid-2000s, immigrants were dealing with extreme animosity from anti-immigrant groups and the U.S. Congress as oppressive immigration bills were considered. In April 2006, Reverend Phillip Lawson, a longtime civil rights leader, and Reverend Kelvin Sauls, a South African immigrant, took action and founded BAJI by calling Black activists together throughout the Oakland and San Francisco Bay area. Priority African Network (PAN) also took a part in BAJI’s growth. PAN, as it says on its website, “organizes Africa Diaspora Dialogues, which have brought African Americans and Black immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America together to dialogue about the myths and stereotypes as well as the cultural, social, and political issues that divide our communities.”

People of color experience criminalization and incarceration, no matter what their immigration status is, and it’s this that BAJI fights against. Last year, BAJI created a Georgia Statewide Rapid Response Network in response to COVID-19 and the challenges many black immigrants face in and outside of detention. ICE Rapid Response has been instrumental in documenting a raid, speaking to witnesses, locating people who are arrested, and highlighting the issue publicly. BAJI is also part of the “Close the Jail ATL Coaltion” that was created due to the many reports of mistreatment of those incarcerated in the Atlanta City Detention Center (ACDC). The goal is not only to close the jail but to also turn it into the home of the Center for Equity, Freedom, andWellness. In May 2019, the Atlanta City Council passed legislation that would close and repurpose ACDC. However, a date for the jail to close has yet to be set. To this day, the jail has yet to be closed, and the Coaltion is still fighting to set a date to close the jail for good. MISSION Our country continues to confront racism within our laws and culture despite the continued outcry and fight for human rights. This makes it challenging for Black immigrants to receive the fair treatment our country claims every person should have, especially within the immigration process. BAJI works to put an end to this type of discrimination and give Black immigrants equal human rights. BAJI’s website says, “We can win by becoming leaders in the fight against structural racism and systemic discrimination.” ATLANTA CHAPTER BAJI has several chapters across the U.S., including in New York City, Oakland, Miami, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. BAJI describes Atlanta as “a center of power, politics, and culture, a cradle of the Civil Rights Movement.” Here, BAJI works tirelessly to

KNOWWHAT TO BRING FOR YOUR IMMIGRATION INTERVIEW At STERN Law, it is our responsibility to ensure our clients are prepared for their immigration interview with USCIS or other immigration agencies. This experience could be stressful if you’re not properly prepared for it, but by providing you with the right guidance and proper approach, we hope to alleviate some of that anxiety. Below are a few ways to prepare for your interview. REMEMBER THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE INTERVIEW IS TO CONVINCE THE IMMIGRATION OFFICER. It is up to them to determine whether or not you are eligible for the benefits you hope to receive. When you understand and appreciate this, you can better decide what you will need to bring to the interview. This will, of course, depend on which application you file. BRING COMPLETE DOCUMENTATION. During the application process, you will have submitted certain documents in addition to the application itself. You will need to bring a the original documents and copies of them with you for the interview. Authenticity of the documents are verified, and often copies are not sufficient. This includes your passport and green card; make sure to not forget these at home. ACCOUNT FOR MAJOR CHANGES. Bring evidence of any major life changes like moving or changing your address, finding a job, or having a child. A new employment letter, copies of recent pay stubs, and proof of your new property or rental agreement are acceptable. Pay stubs are especially important, as they show you can financially support yourself.

THE MONTH OF PURIFICATION And the Hope It Provides The month of February, or Februarius, was named after the Latin term februum , which means purification. For the Romans, this was the time of preparation for the spring and a time to hold their annual fertility celebration, Lupercalia, on Feb. 15. Since those ancient times, February has remained a month for purification and anticipation. In 2021, this is more compelling than ever. On Jan. 20, President Biden was officially sworn into his term of presidency, and February marks his first full month as president of the United States. However, even before this momentous date, our team at STERN Law was hopeful for the change that is yet to come. With the new administration in place, we are feeling ref reshed and bolstered after the many restrictions the Trump administration put in place over the last four years. We know that many of our clients are looking toward a future that is brighter now than it has been in a long time. For our clients, we understand that this is a time they are feeling both anxious and expectant for the future. As once was celebrated a long time ago, February 2021 is a time for preparation of spring after a long winter. However, as its namesake applies, it is a time for purification. In his earliest days as president, Biden and his administration have already made changes that have nullified some of the restrictions the Trump administration put in place. 2021 has already been an improvement on 2020, and STERN Law is hopeful that we will see a renewed faith and trust in each other. February could be the month that marks the beginning of true and positive change, a change that we will be championing every step of the way.

BAJI: Lucha por la justicia TODO SER HUMANO MERECE LA IGUALDAD

Las noticias e historias sobre inmigración se centran principalmente en las comunidades latinas e hispanas. La BAJI es una organización que ofrece una voz a los inmigrantes negros que luchan contra los prejuicios raciales y aboga por la igualdad y la justicia. HISTORIA A mediados de la década de 2000, los inmigrantes tuvieron que enfrentarse a la extrema animosidad de los grupos antiinmigrantes y el Congreso de Estados Unidos se ocupó de los proyectos de ley de inmigración opresiva. La Respuesta Rápida del ICE ha sido fundamental para documentar una redada, hablar con los testigos, localizar a las personas detenidas y poner de relieve el asunto públicamente. La BAJI también forma parte de la “Close the Jail ATL Coaltion”, creada a raíz de las numerosas denuncias de malos tratos a los encarcelados en el Atlanta City Detention Center (ACDC).
