Contracts for Climate Change – Summaries of Supply Chain Clauses (1)
Each of the precedents has a child’s name chosen by the drafting team. This is to encourage long-term thinking and to focus on the next generation as they will be most affected by the serious consequences if we fail to effectively respond to the climate crisis.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRODUCT DESIGN — ALEX’S CLAUSE #carbonfootprint #circulareconomy #recyclable Issue
REDUCTION OF CO2 FROM SINGLE USE PLASTIC — ALICE’S CLAUSE #singleuseplastics #sustainability #greenincentives Issue The use of plastic has a negative climate impact, as CO2 is produced at every stage of the plastic lifecycle – at production, conversion into resins, and disposal. Solution Alice’s Clause would encourage service providers to reduce the volume of single use plastics used in their operations, while payment would be deducted for failing to meet targets. Impact The clause would reduce demand for single use plastics and therefore the CO2 emissions generated in the manufacturing process at the same time as boosting service providers’ green reputation.
Thelackofreuseandrecyclingofproductsresults in excessive consumption of raw materials, which increases the carbon footprint of the product and create unnecessary waste. Solution Alex’s Clause embedding ‘Repair, Reuse and Recycling’ concepts would be included in agreements with suppliers requiring them to create products for circular economy. Impact The clause would encourage suppliers to use recyclable/reusable materials in products which would help to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, as well as the carbon footprint of the products.
