Christopher C. Bell Jr. on the color front lt . williams

This novel “LT. Williams on the Color Front” harkens back to the racism and racial segregation in the U.S. Army in the early 1950s in Germany when the Army began racial desegregation efforts. Often, such efforts prompted White-against-Black face-offs or virtual white “Color Fronts” of resistance against desegregation. This novel is the tense, action- fi lled story of Negro Lieutenant Neal Williams’ coming of age as he struggles against the efforts of prejudiced white of fi cers who scheme to prevent him from succeeding as a newly assigned platoon leader in what has been an all-white infantry regiment.

"Wand": What magic can we make in this crazy world?

Chris Walkman has an unusual problem: he's just been given $20,000 to make the world a better place, starting right in his hometown, Los Angeles of the 1990's. He'd better try something for real, or a not-so-little indiscretion at his previous job might become a bigger issue. So, fueled by the magic of the money and his overactive imagination, he sets to work, hires a homeless man as a co-pilot, and sets out to change things for the better. His key insight: the pen and television broadcast antennas are wands that can still make magic in our time.

Queenly Things Nobody does a signature look quite like Queen Elizabeth. From her

eye-catching monochrome outfits to the shoe brand she’s been wearing for more than 50 years, the Queen has developed an aesthetic over her 70 years on the throne that’s simply iconic. Naturally, the same thing applies to her beauty look. While the Queen isn’t in the business of advertising her favorite lipstick, there are ways to discern her beauty routine. Here, all the brands the British monarch swears by.

16

EC Magazines | Summer Edition 2022

1. Ever Matte Shine Control Mineral Powder Compact Clarins Queen Elizabeth was famously crowned wearing Clarins cosmetics, after commissioning the company to create a shade of lipstick that went with her coronation robes. These days, she’s still using the brand’s products regularly (Clarins holds a royal warrant for “skincare and cosmetics”), and it’s rumored that its Ever Matte powder is among the Queen’s must-haves. 2. Nail Polish in Ballet Slippers Essie According to Essie’s website (and a few other sources), the Queen’s hairdresser wrote the brand’s founder, Essie Weingarten, back in 1989 to request a bottle of Ballet Slippers. Rumor has it that to this day, it’s the only polish that graces Her Majesty’s nails. 3. Hand and Nail Treatment Cream Clarins This tube of hand and nail cream is rumored to “never run out at the palace,” per the Telegraph. After all, if she’s getting her nails done regularly, the Queen surely has to keep up that perfect manicure. 4. Beautiful Color Moisturising Lipstick Elizabeth Arden The Queen has long been a fan of Elizabeth Arden’s lipsticks—according to Hello, the brand has held a royal warrant for over 55 years. Though it’s not known exactly which color the British monarch prefers, she does tend to sport bold pink shades. 5. Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant Elizabeth Arden Another one of the Queen’s Elizabeth Arden favorites is the brand’s Eight Hour Cream, according to the Telegraph. In 2016, a press representative said the brand frequently communicated with the Queen’s senior dresser, Angela Kelly, to service the monarch. “We work closely with Angela and her team to ensure we provide excellent service for whatever Her Majesty requires, or would like to try,” the representative said, per the Telegraph. While they didn’t confirm precisely what products those were, they said, “We can reveal however that we are immensely proud.” 6. Delicious Rhubarb & Rose Bath & Shower Gel Molton Brown Yet another royal warrant-holder, Molton Brown has the privilege of supplying the Queen with “toiletries.” Again, no one’s managed to discover the particular products the monarch enjoys, but based on her penchant for pink, we’re theorizing that Kent Kent is the world’s oldest brush manufacturer, and has held a royal warrant for a whopping nine reigning monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth. 8. White Rose Eau de Toilette Floris According to Floris, the likes of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley, King George IV, and Florence Nightingale were all devotees—meaning that Queen Elizabeth is in good company. Floris has a royal warrant from the Queen, as her “perfumers,” and although she’s never mentioned the scent she’s keen on, we’re betting on the floral White Rose. this body wash is a strong contender. 7. Oval Cherry Wood Hairbrush

The formula, which went viral on TikTok in 2021, counts Vogue editors and celebrities like Bella Hadid and actor Emily Alyn Lind as fans. While shelves are fi lled with accounts of industry titans, politicians, and exalted military leaders, this is a tale of an estranged young man making his way in a hard, cold, and often cruel world. Escaping a dull future with little meaning, he follows the example of his childhood hero and comes west into the Kansas Territory to seek his fortune. He fi rst joins a freighting company down the Santa Fe Trail and then returns to the turbulent "Bleeding Kansas." The long miles are marked by countless graves, scoured by Indians, and fought over by two bitterly opposed political factions. Often discouraged, he must thread his way through these obstacles, and he concludes that he could use a little divine inspiration.

Lydia Ford has written an incredibly honest and transparent story of her life. In the midst of past storms and life changing events, the death of her only daughter, and at the time of publication, the untimely death of her husband of 37 years, Rev. Ford has courageously held fast to her testimony, "Don't Forget to Say Your Prayers," as fi rst taught by her beloved grandmother.

Surely some of you have asked the question, Why pray? Does God even care that I am hurting?

How can prayer change what God has already sovereignly decreed?

How can prayer help me to move forward and accept the devastating loneliness and suffering of my present situation? In this book, Lydia Ford shares how prayer helped her to face the most dif fi cult trials and testing of her faith in God. Read her story and listen to her as she cries out and goes before the Lord with prayers and thanksgiving; relying on God for His assurance that He is only a prayer away.

HE RECENT TRAVAILS OF Netflix, and the tech sector in general, have served notice that the abundance of new series that you have gotten used to — and perhaps grown tired of — may not last forever. ‘WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS’ Season 3 of FX’s hilarious vampire mockumentary ended with several characters encoffined on a boat bound for London, Dracula-style. But early reports on Season 4 indicate that the vampires, their familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), and the newly arrived baby Colin will quickly be reunited at their Staten Island mansion for more farcical and oddly touching adventures. (FX, July 12) ‘UNCOUPLED’ Darren Star (“And Just Like That …”) and Jeffrey Richman (“Modern Family”) created this comedy starring Neil Patrick Harris as a New Yorker who finds himself back on the scene after his husband of 17 years walks out on him. (The creators’ older, possibly more relevant credits are “Sex and the City” and “Frasier,” respectively.) (Netflix, July 29) ‘RESERVATION DOGS’ Sterlin Harjo, working with Taika four Indigenous teenagers (Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis and Lane Factor) who think they want to leave their small-town Oklahoma lives and carry on a low-key crime wave to finance their escape. Set 200 years before the original and focusing on House Targaryen, it will greatly increase the incidence of the letter “y” in popular media: King Viserys (Paddy Considine), Princess Rhaenrya (Emma D’Arcy), Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Rhys Ifans (as Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King). season of this shaggy-dog comic murder mystery, starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short as an odd trio of true-crime podcasters, hit big with people looking for something soothing during the pandemic. In Season 2, the amateur detectives will investigate the murder of the disagreeable board president of their Upper West Side co-op. (Hulu, Aug. 30) ‘LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER’ Nearly five years after it reputedly the most expensive TV show ever made finally comes to the screen. It’s drawn from J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices to “The Lord of the Rings” and set centuries before the action in that book and “The Hobbit,” but the stories of elves, orcs, humans and hobbits (represented by the ancestral Harfoots) will feel familiar. The challenge: butting up against the memories of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” films, a far higher standard, from an artistic standpoint, than “House of the Dragon” has to meet. Including the predecessor series, “The Good Wife,” the story will have had a 13-season run; some performers who, like Baranski, date back to the original show, including Carrie Preston and Alan Cumming, will return for this final go-round. (Paramount+, Sept. 8)

‘BLACK BIRD’ Dennis Lehane developed this fact-based mini- series about a

convict, James Keene (Taron Egerton), who agrees to befriend a suspected serial killer in prison and get him to confess before he is released on appeal. The target is played by Paul Walter Hauser, the star of “Richard Jewell”; Keene’s ex-cop father is played, in one of his last appearances, by Ray Liotta. (Apple TV+, July 8) ‘BETTER CALL SAUL’

EYES HAVE MET

Some of our best dressed stars at the 2022 MET Gala HAT IS GILDED GLAMOUR? From the moment the Met Gala’s 2022 theme was announced, people have tried to unpack its meaning. For some, the phrase calls to mind Edith Wharton’s New York; others find it reminiscent of the blingy, streetwise look of the early 2000s. Given the room for interpretation, guests at tonight’s ceremony were free to chart their own course. They did so gleefully, dressing to the nines in custom designer outfits and archival vintage. W

ALL ABOUT PRIDE MONTH Starting with the Stonewall Uprising in June 1969, Pride Month both commemorates and celebrates LGBTQ activism and culture through the years

EC Magazines | L.A. Times Edition 2022

UNE IS PRIDE MONTH, AND though it continues to look different this year as the country emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, that does not mean that we shouldn’t be celebrating the work of the LGBTQ activists who have changed the world. Pride Month is an entire month dedicated to the uplifting of LGBTQ voices, celebration of LGBTQ culture and the support of LGBTQ rights. Throughout the month of June, nationwide, there have traditionally been parades, protests, drag performances, live theater and memorials and celebrations of life for members of the community who lost their lives to HIV/ AIDS. It is part political activism, part celebration of all the LGBTQ community You probably knew that the rainbow flag — created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 — is used as a symbol of LGBTQ pride, but did you know that each color on the flag has its own meaning? In the widely known six-color flag, red is symbolic of life, orange is symbolic of healing, yellow is sunshine, green is nature, blue represents harmony and purple is spirit. In the original eight-color flag, hot pink was included to represent sex and turquoise to represent magic/art. There have been many variations on the flag. In 2021, the flag has was altered in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests, including black to represent diversity, brown to represent inclusivity and light blue and pink, the colors of the trans pride flag. Why Do We Celebrate in June? We celebrate in June to coincide with the catalyst of the Gay Liberation Movement has achieved over the years. What Is the Pride Symbol? that was the Stonewall Uprising. In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police raided a popular gay bar in N.Y.C.’s West Village, The Stonewall Inn. This was commonplace for the time, but on this particular evening, the patrons of the bar fought back, starting the Stonewall Riots, which went on for days. The Stonewall Inn was declared J

a historic landmark by the city of New York in 2015 and later named a national monument by President Barack Obama in 2016. This June is the 52nd anniversary of the first Pride parade, which happened in 1970, one year after the uprising. Who Were the Major Figures Involved? Marsha P. Johnson is often credited with throwing the first punch at the Stonewall Inn (though there are many prominent figures who are also rumored to have done so). She was a Black trans woman celebrating her 25th birthday at the time of the riots and a tour de force in the gay community. She died in 1992 at just 46 years old after police found her body in the Hudson River—her death was initially ruled a suicide, despite friends and loved ones insisting that could not be the case. We celebrate in June to coincide with the catalyst of the Gay Liberation Movement that was the Stonewall Uprising. Sylvia Rivera was an activist and self-professed drag queen who also played a part in the Stonewall Riots. She fought for transgender rights alongside Marsha P. Johnson, creating S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) to help house homeless LGBTQ youth. She advocated for transgender rights until her death in 2002. Stormé DeLarverie was a gay rights activist and drag performer who was also at Stonewall when it was raided that night. Her friend, Lisa Cannistraci, told the New York Times upon her death in 2014, “Nobody knows who threw the first punch, but it’s rumored that she did, and she said she did. She told me she did.” EC

Q&A WITH HELENE

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? Acting lessons, fun with theater family members and joining out. Also, all the men in my life that I met inspired me so much to write. When did you write your first book and how old were you? I never thought about having my book published. I just enjoyed writing about my life. When I got married to my second husband and lived in Queens, I met Dr. Faretra and she told me after reading all my stories that she wanted me to have them put into a book and be published. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? I love to travel. I do reviews about restaurants that I love to eat in and I am known as the Dining Diva. I am a photographer and enjoy taking wonderful photos especially of landscapes, sunrise, sunsets and everything that I enjoy! Teaching, being named Teacher of the Year and Brooklyn was wonderful! I taught none prejudice and all my students learn that they could be friends with people no matter what their race, religion or color was. We had parties with families who brought in different food and music and each student read stories

about children who were different than them and shared them with the class. What does your family think of your writing? They are proud of it. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing a book? I learned that I could share parts of my life with other people, especially parents and teachers and that others should be kind to people and treat each other like how they would want to be treated. I also love pets and animals and know that in my book, I shared that children who have pets learn how to love and care and how they’re very happy to have them. Do you have any suggestions to help other writers to become better? If so, what are they? Share what you believe and be genuine with how you want others to learn. Give yourself time to write stories and share it with others. Be exciting and interesting and write things that will make your readers enjoy! What do you think makes a good story? If it is a non-fiction story as mine is, see what you could put into your book that will excite and entice your readers.

We got a chance to talk to this well-beloved author. Let’s get to know more on what inspires her and how she continues to be an inspiration to everyone. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer and what inspired you? My mother read to me from the time I was one year old. I started writing when I could and was always interested in buying books, going to the library and reading them at night before I go to sleep. How long does it take you to write a book? And what is your work schedule when you’re writing? I find my life so interesting and I was always writing stories about things that happened. I would write every weekend and on holidays and whenever I had extra time because I enjoyed it so much! What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? Places I went to and friends that I had as well as interesting events that made me want to write fun things which I could share with people.
