Reaching Your Year-Round Target YOUR NUTRIENT AND EXERCISE GOALS

target is too broad or if you don’t have a clear plan to accomplish it, things can become overwhelming very quickly. The key to achieving and maintaining your resolution is to have a goal that is not only specific to your needs but also has a well-thought-out strategy. For 2020, Superior Health Centers wants to encourage our patients to refocus on any nutrition and exercise goals they might have for the new year. If you find yourself struggling to keep up with any of your current goals, now is the perfect time to reevaluate them.Think about different methods you can use to get excited once again or to give yourself the extra push you need to ensure you’re following them day after day. Sticking with your nutrition plan won’t only help you achieve a fit body but will also prevent many other problems from arising. One important nutrition plan we want to ask our patients to keep moving forward with is the Paleolithic, or paleo, nutrition plan. Paleo nutrition is essential because it decreases the risks of inflammation appearing throughout the body, which is often caused by many other foods. Our team considers inflammation a serious enemy for many of our patients who are suffering from

chronic conditions that we treat here in our clinic. By sticking with anti-inflammatory foods, our patients will improve their recovery rate and their overall health. In addition to nutritional goals, exercise also plays a crucial part in our patients’ lives. To live a healthy lifestyle, a person must be active in some way, shape, or form. Our clinic offers a number of exercises that will help people stay active, each depending on the patient’s mobility. Not only will it keep people moving, but it will also improve range of motion, increase muscle strength, and enhance the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. We know that staying mobile is an essential part of life, and we will do our part to ensure you can keep moving for years to come. To help you refocus for the new year, try planning out your goals using SMART. By creating goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, you’ll make them easier for you to accomplish, no matter what your goals may be. “If you can’t fly then run. If you can’t run then walk. If you can’t walk then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

The year 2020 is nearly upon us, and there’s plenty to do as everyone starts to wrap up what’s left of 2019.This is the time of year when people start thinking about what the new one will bring and what they want to accomplish in the next 12 months. Maybe you’re planning to sign up for that sport you’ve always wanted to try out, travel to the country you’ve always wanted to visit, or increase your efforts to live a healthy lifestyle. Your health is an essential part of your life, and planning a NewYear’s resolution around it is always a fantastic way to focus on your goal throughout the year, but it can take some effort to reach those goals. When your

Saint Augustine once called physical pain the “greatest evil” known to man. If you think back as early as you can remember, you’ll probably recall painful episodes involving scraped knees and twisted ankles, among many others. While almost everyone can experience physical pain (more on that later), most of us don’t know a lot about the nature of pain. Experiencing physical pain is hardwired into our evolutionary biology, but not all types of pain are the same. Since almost all Superior Health Center treatments deal with pain, let’s take a moment to demystify the nature of the beast. WhyWe Feel Pain “At the most basic level,” states the Mayo Clinic, “pain begins when particular nerve endings are stimulated.” In other words, pain is a type of signal; it’s our brain’s way of communicating that something is wrong. The world is full of dangers capable of causing us serious, irreparable harm, and when we feel pain, we know to leave those dangers alone.A small percentage of people suffer from a congenital insensitivity to pain. While that sounds like a superpower in theory, it’s a nightmare in practice. If you can’t feel pain, you have to be constantly mindful not to do something that could permanently injure or even kill you. 2Types of Pain Pain can be categorized in many ways, but one of the most useful distinctions is between acute and chronic pain.Acute pain occurs from an injury and subsides once that injury heals. In cases of acute pain, our brain tells us that part of our body is physiologically wounded and in need of repair. If we sprain an ankle, we know to avoid walking on it because it hurts to do so.Treating acute pain often involves protecting and encouraging healing in the injured area while strengthening the surrounding muscles for added support. Chronic pain, which lasts indefinitely and can lack a clear cause, is a murkier subject. Chronic pain is undoubtedly real, but diagnosing and treating it requires more in-depth testing. Sometimes it is the result of an underlying condition, such as arthritis. In others, it is the result of damage to the nerves, a condition known as neuropathy. No matter how much or what type of physical pain you suffer, Superior Health Center treatments can likely help get you on the path to feeling less of it. WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH PAIN? A Look at the Most Common Human Ailment

PATIENT STORY OF THE MONTH! Getting a Full Night’s Rest

After struggling with sleep night after night due to intense pain, Mr. Rodolph now sleeps longer and more restfully throughout the night.

The pain Mr. Rodolph felt was in both his shoulders,

something he had been living with for quite some time. He states that he was in pain “pretty

much 24/7.” Not only this, but any movement of his arms and shoulders aggravated the pain, making his life miserable. “I had a very restricted range of motion,” he adds. Before he started his treatments at Superior Health Centers, Mr. Rodolph says his pain made it nearly impossible to do simple, everyday tasks. “I was basically unable to get dressed without extreme difficulty.” Not only did he find this hard, but other activities that involved lifting his arms even slightly, such as washing his hair, were also beyond his abilities to achieve. “It was also affecting my sleep considerably. Since I could only sleep on my side, the pressure would cause increased pain.” Mr. Rodolph was eager to find a solution that would give him the peace of mind and the full night’s sleep that he wanted. He approached Superior Health Centers, and our team leaped into action to help. After receiving several treatments, Mr. Rodolph is living a significantly pain-free life, has recovered his range of motion, and is overjoyed about the service he has received. “There’s been a noticeable decrease in the pain. I’m able to sleep longer at night now.” He is grateful for the gift he’s received from our team at Superior Health Centers and says that it’s “the pain relief itself that’s providing the greatest benefit.” Having the skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to provide our patients with that peace of mind is essential to all of us. man to call and make a doctor’s appointment to discuss sexual function — that’s a big emotional obstacle to overcome.” However, thanks to advancements in several different treatment methods, discussions around ED are becoming normalized and driving increased public awareness. Bloomberg School of Public Health, over 18 million men over the age of 20 in the U.S. alone suffer from ED. UW Health takes this number and breaks it down even further with the following statistics. • Men over 50 are more than three times as likely to experience erection problems and to report low sexual desire compared with men under the age of 30. Nevertheless, many people avoid talking about or seeking treatment for ED due to its personal nature. Dr. DanWilliams of Generations Fertility Care speaks to this aspect of ED, calling it a “very emotional and sensitive topic to discuss.” He says, “For a

Holiday Foods Around the World

What Do Other Countries Eat to Celebrate the Season? HOLIDAY CUISINE AROUND THE GLOBE go into their savory, spicy lamb stew on the holiday. As with many of the country’s dishes, yebeg wot is scooped up and eaten with injera (teff flatbread). Israel: Latkes Latkes have been synonymous with Hanukkah for more than 900 years, and no Israeli Christmas would be complete without the little potato pancakes cooked symbolically in oil. Despite their long history, though, latkes now vie with sufganiyot — a kind of jelly-filled donut — for a place on the holiday table. Japan: Fried Chicken Thanks to a clever 1970s marketing campaign, the dish of choice for Christmas in Japan is fried chicken — specifically, KFC. Unlike inAmerica, holiday orders in the country come with chocolate cake, roasted chicken with stuffing, and even bottles of Christmas wine emblazoned with Colonel Sanders’ face. Sweden: Saffron Buns According to Delish, Swedish tradition “dictates that the eldest daughter dress in a white gown tied with a red sash and a crown of lit candles, then wake her parents with hot coffee and a tray of saffron buns.” Swedes also feast on a casserole called Jansson’sTemptation made with potatoes, onions, anchovies, and cream.

Celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa vary from country to country, but there is one thing that unites holiday parties around the world: food. While some American traditions overlap with those of other countries — Peru, for example, shares our love of hot chocolate; England and Canada raise glasses of eggnog; and Italy digs into a version of fruitcake called panettone — there are plenty of dishes beloved all over the world that never make it to the American table. Below, we’ve rounded up a few you might consider exploring this season. Costa Rica:Tamales Christmas in Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without tamales, a savory treat made by stuffing corn dough, meat, garlic, onions, potatoes, and raisins into corn husks or banana leaves. The process of filling and steaming the tamales can take days, and every family makes their own signature filling. Ethiopia:YebegWot Ethiopians start preparing their Christmas meals as early as October, when they buy the still-live lambs that will eventually
