Synergy Healthcare: Don't Suffer With Pain

The Chronicle Getting You Back on Track

“Enjoy LifeWithout the Fear of KneePain!” DON’T SUFFERWITH PAIN

Do you suffer from knee, hip or leg pain? You are not alone. CDC studies show that 30% of adults have reported some form of knee, hip, or ankle joint stiffness or pain in a 30 day period. The hip and knee joints are incredible marvels of the human body. At times, they have to withstand up to 6 times your body weight in force. The knee joint is the second most complicated joint in the body and has tomove inmany directions, including forward, backward, and side to side. These different movements are called accessory motions and are needed for normal walking, running, and bending. When you experience pain in the side of the hip, groin, thigh, or knee, you may have difficulty with these accessory motions. Prolonged sitting, injuries, arthritis, and disease can affect accessory motions. With every day use, tissues around the hip and knee joints tighten, leading to a gradual loss of motion. This causes a lot of pressure to build up on specific parts of the joints. When Your Motion is Lost. When you lose the movement of the hip, knee, or ankle joints, your

muscles have to take on the abnormal strain. This leads to common aches and pains experi- enced by millions of people. Many people feel that medication will help solve their hip, knee, or leg pain. While medication can help to decrease inflammation and pain, it cannot address the root cause of the problem. Most pain in the hip, thigh, knee, or leg comes from poor flexibility, strength, or coordination. Treating Leg Pain. To determine the source of your leg pain, our physical therapists examine your walking, squatting, joint movement, com- paring the strength and mobility of the joints. A comprehensive treatment plan, including special hands-on techniques, is made to achieve the fastest relief and the longest lasting results. If you are suffering with hip, knee or leg pain, call us today to learn more how we can eliminate your pain and put a spring back in your step! Look inside to learn more and say good-bye to that aching knee or hip!

FREQUENCY SPECIFIC MICROCURRENT (FSM) FOR NEUROPATHIC PAIN

Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) has been used in numerous practices for the past ten years with positive results. Neuropathic pain caused by strokes and phantom limb pain have been successfully treated using this revolutionary method. FSM works by the utilization of square- wave pulses that dramatically increase protein synthesis and energy production. Pain begins to drop within minutes of the treatment starting and continues to drop until leveling off at the 60-minute mark. Burn patients that received this treatment experienced lasting increases in their rangeofmotion.Thebestpartof thissystem is that according toa2010studybyCarolynMcMakin,MA, DC, “nopatients reportedorcomplainedofnegative side effects either during or after treatment. The most common side effect is a sense of euphoria presumably caused by an increase in endorphins.” In the same study, recipients of one treatment reported a decrease from an average initial pain score of 6.8/10 to 1.8/10. A second treatment resulted in a decrease in average pain from 4.8/10 to 1/10. This trend of lower post-treatment pain scores was consistent among all treatments in this study. After the treatment was completed,

65% of patients fully recovered from nerve pain. One patient even bought a small FSMmachine for homeuse.McMakinalso reported that “allpatients reported some reduction in pain with treatment.” Her conclusion was more forthright when she stated: “treatment is noninvasive, low-risk, widely available, relatively inexpensive, and appears to have no significant side effects.” This treatment is used as part of a comprehensive approach including specific manual therapy techniques, exercise prescription, and diet modification. We are starting to see changes in clients who have had long-standing neuropathic pain, post-concussion syndrome, migraines, and scar tissue that affects their lymphatic flow and postural imbalances. We have also seen changes withperipheralneuropathy, improvedbonehealing with fractures, decreased symptoms with COPD, and decreases in anxiety. Frequencyspecificmicrocurrentasan independent modality isnotcoveredby insurance. Ifusedduring othertreatments, weconsidertheFSMtreatmentto bebundledwithother techniques includingmanual

therapy and exercise prescription. Frequency and duration of care is dependant on the diagnosis. We have priced non-bundled FSM treatment at about one dollar per minute. Some protocols run 20 minutes, while some run over 80 minutes. Frequency-SpecificMicrocurrent isaneffective tool to reduceandeffectivelymanagechronicpain. This breakthrough in technology is now being offered at Synergy Healthcare today. Come see how we can help you or your loved ones experience life more pain-free!

“You Deserve A Pain Free & Active Summer!” Simple Exercises to Strengthen The Knees

QUAD STRETCH The quad stretch is a tremendous bang for your buck move that can be done just about anywhere. Got a chair? Good you can do this exercise. The beauty in this stretch is that it hits the front of the foot, ankles, shins, quads and knees. How it’s done: Sit on a standard chair sideways with your right side facing out and feet flat on the floor. Balance on the chair on your left buttock so that your right leg is outside of the chair leg. Hold the back of the chair with your left hand. Bend your right leg and grab onto your ankle with your right hand. Pull your heel back toward your butt, until your knee is pointed down at the floor. Hold the stretch for 10 to 20 seconds, then repeat on the other side. KNEE EXTENSION STRETCH Assessing and treating loss of knee extension range of motion is an important component of rehabilitation following any knee surgery or injury. There are many ways to treat loss of range of motion in the knee, however, proper assessment of range of motion is even more important. Allowing gentle, frequent, and progressive load to the knee is usually more tolerable for the person, especially those that are sore or guarded in their movements. How it’s done: While sitting, tighten your top thigh muscle to press the back of your knee downward towards the ground. Hold for 30 seconds. Alternate legs and repeat 5 times.

STRAIN-COUNTERSTRAIN FOR FASCIA

Strain-Counterstrain Strain-counterstrain is a revolutionary technique developed by Dr. Lawrence Jones, DO, that uses the connective fascial tissue and an understanding of tender points to relieve pain and increase the range of motion. This technique can be used to treat dysfunction in any soft tissue, including the nervous system. The nervous system is essential in maintaining homeostasis because it regulates pain perception and sensory perception in the body, as well as movement, digestion, blood flow, thinking, emotions, and perception of where the body is in space. By decompressing a given tender point a therapist maintains a patient in a pain-free position for 30-45 seconds. This opens the valves of the veins and lymph vessels surrounding the nerves in the area, reducing swelling around the nerves. Brian Tuckey (PT, OCS, JSCCI) pioneered the use of fascial counterstrain for the nervous system based on the theory that if counterstrain worked on other types of fascia, it would also work on the fascia surrounding nerves.

Tuckey found strain-counterstrain to be effective in treating problems of the nervous system including carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic headaches, chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and even idiopathic (unknown cause) peripheral neuropathy, as well as in pinched nerves and the relief of the feeling of numbness. The reason for this interconnectivity between tender points and the deep fascia is based on what Tuckey describes as a protective cocoon that can sense and respond to strain applied to fragile internal structures such as organs, nerves, and blood and lymph vessels. Stress on the fascia surrounding these structures can “call in” a protective response from the muscle system to avoid damage. This level of connectivity may not rise to the level of consciousness, instead manifesting in involuntary muscle spasms or contractions. Even more subtly, an inflamed nerve can change a joint’s resting position by increasing the tone of skeletal or smooth muscle or creating weakness through pain inhibition, neural compression, or skeletal muscle reciprocal inhibition.
