How Being Present and Involved Impacts Development HELP THEM STAND ON THEIR OWN

As my children get older and set off for their next adventure, I can’t help but be so proud of how far they have come. Their hard work and dedication are a reflection of everything Subrat and I have prepared them for to live successful lives. As a mother, there’s nothing better than seeing your children stand on their own feet.

handle it because they raised me to be strong and confident, and they always supported me when I needed them.

Being a parent is not easy or simple, but if we want our children to be successful in life, we have to pay attention and be dedicated to guiding them in the right direction. There will even be times when you have to stand up for your kids because they cannot always defend themselves in certain situations.

Since they are busy with school and internships, summer vacations are very important to us, as it’s a time we can spend together as a family. I always look forward to traveling and trying new things with them, but this year’s summer vacation feels a little bittersweet. This may be our last summer vacation, since the kids will be continuing their education and building careers for themselves. My son will be on break before he goes back to Switzerland for school, and my daughter will be interning at a clinic prior to entering her doctorate physical therapy program. So, we have a small window of time to plan a great family summer vacation and spend time with one another.

There was a time my daughter came home from school and told me how she had to spend her lunch break doing homework. But my children were always on top of their homework, so I was very confused as to why she was being punished. Come to find out, my daughter had done Monday’s homework instead of Tuesday’s.

So, I wrote a letter to the teacher to clarify the issue because she always did everything asked of her, and it wasn’t like she didn’t do the homework at all. Most parents miss out on things like this because they don’t communicate with their children about what is happening and who is doing what. They tend to think it’s the teacher’s responsibility when in reality, it is on the parents to be involved so they know why and how a problem arises. As parents, we should be active and present in our children’s lives because it helps build their strengths and abilities to take on the world. That also means paying attention to what you’re doing as a parent and learning how to change if need be. This gives your child a strong foundation of support that sets them up for future success. I’ve applied everything I learned from my own parents to my children’s lives, and that is why they are so successful now! But not everyone has the opportunity to learn from their parents, but you can always start fresh with us here at Synergy Therapeutic Group. We can teach your children the right steps to take, and in turn, they can lead successful and independent lives.

The best part about this is how my kids love spending time with me and Subrat. Most parents complain about how their kids never want to hang around them, but my kids are the complete opposite. I’ve never had to worry about where they were or what they were doing because they were always on time and at home with us, and they wanted to be. Our connection is so strong that they would rather eat dinner with us than go out with their friends. My parents told me and my siblings from the beginning, “We want you to be independent so you can stand on your own feet. You don’t have to depend on anyone. You have to be your own person to be successful and to do whatever you want to do.” They were often criticized by their relatives for how we were raised, but they didn’t care — they would do anything in their power to ensure we lived the life we wanted. From my parents, I learned to always support and stand behind your kids. There were times I didn’t know what to do or how to survive without my parents, but even though I felt that way, I knew I could

PROTECT YOUR GARDEN FROM HEAT

Not all gardening tasks are suitable for the entire family. Fertilizers can be dangerous, and you definitely don’t want a young child wielding sharp tools. But there’s one gardening project you and the kids can tackle together: protecting your plants from the heat. Last June, heat waves scorched the country, sending temperatures in Portland, Oregon, of all places to 110 degrees F. This is uncomfortable at best, and at worst a massive heat wave can ruin an entire spring’s worth of effort in the garden. To avoid that, rope your kids into helping you with easy heat solutions like these: 1. Build shade covers — Shade helps people survive the heat, and it’s great for plants too! You can overlay greenery with umbrellas, canopies, “garden fabric,” or even bed sheets draped over your plants. If you have spare lumber or PVC pipe, build a trellis to hold up your shade cover. YouTube has plenty of tutorials for this — just search “Garden Shade DIY.” 2. Spread organic mulch — Adding 2–4 inches of light-colored mulch around your trees, shrubs, and other plants will protect the soil from the sun and keep it damp and cool. 3. Swap out terra cotta pots — Unsealed terra cotta pots are terrible at retaining moisture. If you water a plant in terra cotta, it won’t be long before that water evaporates. To avoid this, enlist With Help From Your Kids

the kids to repot your plants in oversized, light-colored plastic nursery pots. (Some nurseries give these away for free!)

4. Water, water, water — Your garden will dry out twice as fast during extreme heat, so take shifts as a family checking the soil and watering when needed. Don’t rely on your sprinkler system or usual watering schedule. These tips should help protect your delicate fruit and vegetable plants. Next year, get a head start by asking your local nursery to help you choose drought and heat-tolerant species for your region and beefing up your soil with organic matter. According to Farmers’ Almanac, soil rich with 5%–9% organic matter (think compost, manure, and decomposing leaves) retains more water, saving you trips with the hose.

BREATHE IN THE BENEFITS

Use Your Mind-Body Connection to Heal

The mind-body connection is the intimate intertwining of physical and emotional health. How you feel influences the way you think, and vice versa. Since they are connected, you can treat one by treating the other. Check out these breathing techniques to stimulate your mind-body connection. Nose vs. Mouth Breathing Many people think that breathing through your nose and mouth are the same. You’re getting air to your lungs regardless, so what’s the difference? Well, our nose is designed to breathe air and our mouth is designed for us to eat. The nostril hairs filter out the dust and other particles, whereas the mouth takes everything in. When we breathe through our mouths, we are swallowing unfiltered air.

The most important things in our nose are turbinates. You can think of this as an air conditioning unit in your nose! Turbinates change the temperature of the air you inhale, which is essential to our body and gives comfort to our lungs. Proper Breathing Technique If you have no physical obstacles, sit cross- legged with your spine erect and your palms facing upward. Close your eyes and mouth, then take a deep breath through your nose. You should feel the air going down to your abdomen. Hold the breath, then exhale through your mouth. For those who have physical obstacles, instead of sitting up, you can sit against a chair. Make sure your bottom is all the way back and repeat the steps listed

above. If you’re unable to sit up properly, you can also lie down on a flat surface. Keep your arms by your sides with your palms facing upward and continue the steps provided. Benefits of Proper Breathing Proper breathing has an array of benefits that help your overall health. It improves your sleep, enhances your focus, and reduces seasonal allergy issues. It even aids in reducing the risks of heart problems and prevents respiratory issues in the long run.

INSIDE What I Learned From My Own Parents 1 Be the Superhero Your Garden Needs Our Clients Say It Best! 2 Breathing Techniques to Try at Home Summer Crab and Lemon Carbonara 3 Why You Need to Ditch the Flip-Flops 4

WHY YOUR FLIP-FLOPS ARE DOING MORE HARM THAN YOU THINK DITCH THE FLOPS

‘What if I just only wear flip-flops? Will that help?’ Unfortunately, this isn’t just something your body “gets used to.” Wearing flip-flops for a long period of time can cause chronic problems in addition to standard joint pain. For instance, you could experience plantar fasciitis — which is pain in the tissue that connects your heel and toes — or Achilles tendinitis. The latter results from overuse of the tendon in the back of your heel. Essentially, because your foot is having to compensate for flip- flops’ lack of support, the overexertion at an unnatural angle causes more problems over time. ‘So, I can never wear flip-flops, then?’ Good news! You don’t have to swear off flip-flops or sandals. Find a pair of shoes that offer the right amount of support for your arches. You can tell if shoes have this by looking for the “bump” in the middle of the shoe. Archies are a popular flip-flop brand with the arch built right in! Test drive a pair of these or consult with a trusted physical therapist to find the flip-flops or sandals that give you the summertime look we all want without the flip-flop pain.

Whether you’re walking around poolside or simply enjoying a day at the ballpark, few summertime outfits are complete without a pair of flip-flops. But if you struggle with foot pain — or are simply aging out of your invincible 20s — wearing flip-flops may be one of the worst things you can do for your feet. ‘Why do my feet hurt!?’ Because flip-flops don’t have any support, your arches receive more pressure than when you are wearing shoes that have built-in materials for arches, like tennis shoes. That often explains why your feet are sore, but this can also create a problem for the rest of your body. ‘Wait — flip-flops can hurt my whole body?’ Wearing flip-flops can limit how you walk because you’re compensating for the arch pressure. This can impact your ankles, knees, lower back, and hips by placing unnatural weight on these joints and muscles. This could also have an impact on your balance, since the distribution of your weight with each step is off-kilter.
