4 Lessons From Chandana’s Broken Leg THE TIME I WAS THE PATIENT

If you were at the clinic during July and August, you may have seen me donning a new (mandatory) accessory. The story of how I got it is fairly typical, but the lessons I want my patients to learn from it are worth sharing. Our family planned a short trip to Jamaica over the Fourth of July weekend, and after a year of having our children away from home, Subrat and I looked forward to making more memories together as a family.

My daughter soon discovered me on the beach, and after I had been given ice, I spent the night icing my leg for 20 minutes every two hours and treating my pain with homeopathic remedies. I’ve studied these remedies for years, and I knew my body needed natural, non-anti-inflammatory medication to trigger the healing process. When you take anti- inflammatories after an injury, you actually slow down the healing process. This is because inflammation is the first step the body takes in healing, and prohibiting that limits what your body can do. The next day, I was adamant that I would wait until we got home to get an X-ray. (I wanted to be seen by my medical team.) The nurse was shocked, as she could probably discern from my swelling and immobility that I had broken a bone, but I had enough medical and therapeutic training to know that I could care for my injury with regular icing, elastic bandages, and homeopathic treatments. When we finally did get home — about two days after my injury — my fears were confirmed: I had broken my fibula. By the time I saw my doctor, they were amazed at the state of my leg, which had begun to heal and had reduced in swelling thanks to laser treatment by Subrat. I’ve continued with my treatment, including therapy during my healing, and after weeks, my mobility was already returning. In fact, after four weeks, my ankle could move again!

However, nothing could seem to go right!

It all started at the airport. It had been so long since we had traveled, and we didn’t realize there were new rules that would impact our ability to fly to Jamaica that day. So, after standing in line for an hour, we learned we couldn’t fly that day. The next day, we took off without a problem — only to land in Jamaica without Subrat’s or my luggage. Finally, our luggage arrived, and it felt like our vacation was on track.

My leg had other plans.

After dinner one evening, I decided to walk down the stairs to the beach to get a better view of the ocean. As I reached the last step, I thought my next step would be the beach. Little did I know that I had missed the real last step, and in an instant, I tripped forward and landed hard on the beach. I heard a cracking sound in my leg and felt immediate excruciating pain shooting up my leg. I knew something was terribly wrong. As I sat there, I focused on staying calm. This is a technique I remind my patients and their families to do all the time. Panicking will only worsen the situation because it triggers the sympathetic nervous system, which can constrict blood flow, raise your blood pressure, and cause other healing-inhibiting reactions across your body. Similarly, unlike others who break their bones — which, if it wasn’t obvious, is what I did — I didn’t pass out. I regularly stimulate my vagus nerve through breathing exercises, which is another simple yet precise exercise I encourage patients to do. This prevented me from passing out, and I stayed alert enough to remedy the situation.

It’s been a long road to recovery, but I hope our patients take away some key points from my experience:

1. Don’t panic when you get injured. 2. Ice for 20 minutes every two hours after an injury. 3. Don’t take anti-inflammatories. 4. Seek therapeutic treatment right away.

Take it from someone whose ankle could move again four weeks after breaking her leg: When you set your body up to heal, it can do amazing things.

Thank you for the well wishes.

ACHIEVE MISE EN PLACE With These DIY Kitchen Storage Ideas!

Even in different sizes, you won’t run out of uses for these, since they can be potentially used as a gift container too!

No. 3: Hidden Measuring Cup Hooks Tired of your measuring cups rattling in a drawer? Put small hooks inside a cabinet door, hang your measuring cups, and close. You can use stick-on hooks or drill a small bar of wood inside and attach hooks to the bar. This works great with any small utensils, but it works best if your cabinet’s interior isn’t stacked and overflowing with items. No. 4: Pot and Pan Lid Storage Bar Everyone says keep your lid on, but nobody says what to do with your lid when it’s off. It’s annoying how often lids pile up inside your kitchen space — but if you install a single metal bar (yep, just one!), any lid with any type of middle grip can be stored on it. Just slide it on top, and the bar will hold up the lid, thanks to its handle preventing any fall. Bonus — Easy Chalkboard Menu/Grocery List While this isn’t an “item storage” idea per se, it does make it easy to store and update your grocery list! First, use chalkboard paint on the inside (or outside) of one of your cabinets. Then, use chalk markers to create and update your weekly grocery list every time you run out of an ingredient. You can also use it for a menu during parties!

The perfect philosophy for organizing your kitchen is mise en place: Everything needs to have its place. So, it’s time for those lids to stop piling up in a corner of your cabinet and pots to be stored properly! Here are a few DIY ideas that’ll make the tasks even easier: No. 1: Pegboard Utensil and Pot Organizer Add a chic touch to your kitchen and make all your pans and cooking utensils easy to grab with a pegboard! Not only are pegboards constructed rather sturdily, but you can also paint and use metal hook inserts to hold all sorts of kitchen tools, from heavy pans to kitchen scissors. No. 2: Upcycled Tin Can Storage Don’t throw away tin cans! Instead, keep them, repaint them, and/or label them for pastas, grains, spices, candies, snacks, and much more.

In our video testimonials, viewers are treated to a fellow patient’s story — perhaps often hearing similar scenarios to their own. However, the most powerful component of these videos is seeing tangible evidence of our patients’ improvement. In some of our video testimonials, patients can be seen raising their arms over their heads or moving their necks with ease — actions that previously would have been impossible.

3 SMALL THINGS YOU CAN DO TODAY

To Stimulate a Better Tomorrow

Reduce your stress to reduce your child’s stress.

With information more accessible than ever before, it’s easy to get bogged down with misinformation. For instance, some health experts say berries are some of the healthiest foods on the planet, while others argue that the sugar intake makes berries unhealthy. With this kind of information overload, it can be difficult to know what to ignore! Luckily, Dr. Chandana Dash has three small, easy, and proven ways you can improve your well-being and your family’s stress levels. Cut through the noise and try these tips this fall! Practice gratitude. As Dr. Dash explains, injuring herself on vacation was not part of her plan! It would have been easy to become frustrated and angry, but instead, she chose to find the positives. For starters, the injury didn’t occur on their first day, and with a background

in therapeutic healing and her extensive research in homeopathic remedies, she was able to take control of her healing process. By focusing on these points, Dr. Dash’s mind was set up to support her body’s physical need to heal. She had more clarity, and today, her leg continues to get better! Get outside in nature. Humans are grounded in nature, and this is especially true of children. Digging in the dirt, experiencing the calmness of nature, and even walking around barefoot can have immense benefits to your mental and spiritual health. Dr. Dash recommends parents and children walk outside barefoot on a regular basis. This connects people to the earth, grounding them in the present and relieving physical, material stress. Plus, a little nature therapy could help your child perform better in school.

Our children feed off our emotions and outlooks, and when you’re stressed, your child zeros in on it. Practice reducing your anxiety in situations that may be stressful or overstimulating for your children. Try using breathing techniques and exercises to calm your mind, limit anxiety, and strengthen your vagus nerve. As Dr. Dash explained on this edition’s cover, this is the nerve that can cause you to pass out from stress. Keep it strong to avoid this! The small actions we take today can lead to big changes, but if you need more assistance in your healing journey, contact Synergy Therapeutic Group today.

P.S. Eat berries. They’re good for you!

GHOSTS ACROSS AMERICA

3 HAUNTED SPOTS EVERY GHOST BELIEVER WILL LOVE

October is one of the best months for travel in the U.S. With mild temperatures and gorgeous, colorful leaves everywhere, there’s no better time for a cross-country road trip. Add some Halloween flair to your October vacation with these three ghostly attractions. Visit the most haunted town in the U.S. — Waynesville, Ohio . Sure, New Orleans may have a spooky past, but it doesn’t compare to Waynesville. Many residents and visitors think this Ohio town is rife with ghosts. You may hear cries to “hurry up” at The Hammel House Inn, where many tunnels for the underground railroad came through, or you could see the apparition of a businessman from the 1800s who “never checked out.” Other sources

report hauntings at the town’s historical society, Museum at the Friends Home, including a little girl who moves toys and sits on the porch. The society leans into the local fascination and hosts regular walking ghost tours and ghost hunting classes. Stay a while at Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff, Arizona. Guests at Hotel Monte Vista have often enjoyed long stays at the downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, hotel, but not everyone leaves. Constructed in 1927, the hotel is host to a number of reported ghosts. The most well-known is an elderly woman who would spend hours rocking in the chair in her room. Today, her chair can be found moving on its own. Another popular visitor is the ghost of a bellboy who knocks on

doors and announces that room service has arrived — only, no one’s there.

Is there a monster in Pine Barrens, New Jersey? This one’s for those who love mysterious creatures. Pine Barrens is a mass of forested land that spreads across seven counties in New Jersey — and its most famous resident isn’t human. The Jersey Devil has a long, storied history and is said to be a combination of many animals: Its body is shaped like a kangaroo with wings. It has the head of a dog but the face of a horse. The creature is believed to have had a sickly start to life in 1735 and has stayed to haunt the forest’s inhabitants and even those who visit the area today.
