Gadsden City Driver Finds People Like You By Sharing Our Culture

amazing to me to think that we have such an atmosphere of teamwork – and it runs from top to bottom.’” That’s because Our Driving Force Is People, and according to Greg, our people are the best of the best. He keeps that in mind when he’s talking to potential teammates. “When it comes to selecting teammates, Averitt doesn’t cut any corners. We don’t shy away from our values and standards – and that’s a good thing!” says Greg. “So whenever I refer someone to our team, I want to make sure that person would be a good fit. I’m always on the lookout for individuals who are hardworking, doing a good job even when they don’t know someone’s watching – those are the kind of people I want on my team. They are also usually the ones who are really going to appreciate what Averitt has to offer – the benefits, the 401(k), the Profit Sharing, the paid holidays. When I tell those potential referrals about Averitt, it’s usually an easy bite.” Greg, thank you for all you do to represent Averitt with pride and for helping us continue to grow! “I’m just not one of those people who can keep a good thing to myself!” says Greg. “There are so many different positions and opportunities at Averitt. Why not share that with people – especially people you know, who would love to be part of the same team. It’s just a wonderful place to work, and I want others to know!” Before joining Averitt, Greg worked at a competing transportation company for 20 years, and one of the biggest differences he’s experienced at Averitt is our second-to-none culture of associate recognition. Having experienced Driver Appreciation Week celebrations this past September, Greg notes how special it is to be part of a team that appreciates associates like we do. “I tell a lot of people about the different ways Averitt recognizes us, and they are amazed,” says Greg. “Before I worked at Averitt, Driver Appreciation Week was something you really didn’t hear much about. Not many companies really celebrate it like we do. And the way Averitt truly honors their associates – things like giving away gifts and providing meals – that’s just impressive. And when I tell that to referrals, it really shows what our culture is like.” Beyond our annual Driver Appreciation Week celebrations, we love to recognize our teammates all year long through our R+ program, Red Thinkin’ Rewards, People Like You Referral Rewards, service and safety milestones, and other special ways like personal acknowledgments from executive leadership. “Even our CEO, GARY SASSER , recognizes us one-on-one through phone calls and other ways,” says Greg. “He actually takes the time to call new hires, and to congratulate us on our accomplishments. Where else do you see that? It’s unheard of, and it shows the family culture of Averitt. It’s

‘THIS PLACE IS GOING TO BE SPECIAL’

Phil Pierce Shares His Thoughts On Our 50-Year Anniversary

Phil has been with Averitt for 40-plus years, and he learned early in his career that our team was different from the competition. Phil recalls a story that drove the point home: as service center director for our Chattanooga facility, he was instructed to make sure the tractors there were washed every week. If there’s anyone who knows about our culture, where we’ve been in 50 years as a team, and where we’re going in the future, it’s executive vice president of sales and marketing PHIL PIERCE.

Executive vice president of sales and marketing PHIL PIERCE (right), pictured with president WAYNE SPAIN (left), recently reached 40 years of service with Averitt. Throughout his Averitt career, Phil has seen how our culture and commitment to professionalism sets our team apart in the transportation industry.

hiring, retaining and developing the best people. “Our No. 1 business decision to this day is who we bring into our team,” he explains. “It’s the same as it was 40 years ago and 50 years ago. We want people who want to be in the environment that we’ve established. And once you get them here, we give people the opportunity to succeed to their full potential.”

Phil says one way to secure our future is staying in tune with our customers, and showing them The Power of One by connecting them to the many services we offer. “We need to know what they need to be successful,” he says. “That’s how we’ve built all of our services. We always have to listen to our customers and what they need, and then we can find the services that can help them succeed. That’s worked very well for us.” Phil adds that it’s very important to continue to find People Like You – people who share our passion for teamwork and customer service. “We’re doing everything we can to get the right drivers and keep the right

“I thought, ‘Wow.’ I came from a carrier where I had been for two years, and the tractors had never been washed,” says Phil, who recently announced his retirement at the end of this year. “I knew right then, ‘This place is going to be special.’ Little did I know how special.” That story stuck with Phil because it showed our commitment to professionalism, positive image and raising the standard in the transportation industry. “Back in those days, you didn’t want to tell anybody you were in this business,” he says. “It had a bad reputation. It was unionized and not

Barry Blakely, Larry Mason And Kent Williams Have Grown In Their Careers PROMOTING FROM WITHIN KEEPS US STRONG An important part of our culture for the last 50 years has been our commitment to doing things The Averitt Way. That includes hiring and developing the best associates, and promoting fromwithin.

Several of our recent leadership promotions are great examples of that mindset. BARRY BLAKELY has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer. Taking Barry’s role as vice president of operations is LARRY MASON , who most recently served as our Region 5 vice president. Additionally, KENT WILLIAMS has been promoted from Region 4 vice president to executive vice president of sales and marketing, where he’ll fill the role previously held by the retiring PHIL PIERCE . CAREER- GROWTH STOR I ES Barry began his Averitt career in 1986 with our sales team, and he’s also served as Birmingham service center director and in regional leadership roles before becoming vice president of operations in 2017. Larry began in 1997 as a frontline leader in Louisville, and has also served as an operations manager

promoting from within helped him grow. “Someone told me long ago that if you’ll be the best at what you’re doing, opportunities will find you. You won’t have to go look for them,”

Larry recalls. “I believe that’s what’s happened for me. I’ve tried to be the best I could possibly be in every role I’ve been in, and that’s opened up opportunities for new things.”

Kent adds, “In my mind, our culture is everything. Over the years, our competitors have tried to duplicate our uniforms and clean trucks. But what they can’t duplicate is our culture. We’re fortunate that we work in a place where

people go out of their way to make it a great environment where you want to work. And it’s a great place for our customers to want to do business with us.” 50 YE ARS I S JUST THE BEG I NN I NG This year marks our 50th anniversary, and even better things are in store as we continue our culture, according to Barry, Larry and Kent. “If you think about it, the core group of our leadership has been in place for the majority of those 50 years,” Larry explains. “We have to continue to promote from within and grow people throughout Averitt in our culture. Doing that will help us continue to be successful.” Kent adds, “It’s important for associates to understand our culture and values. Understand why they’re so important, and make sure you do all you can to embrace our culture and be an example to others.” For Barry, our continued success boils down to our Winner’s Circle – Our Customers, Our Associates and Our Future. “We have to keep our eyes on the things that have allowed us to be successful,” Barry says. “It is our vision where associates win, where customers win, which helps our company win. Service has to be key. We have to provide competitive service with a safety-minded atmosphere for our associates and the driving public. And we have to have an atmosphere that allows our associates to excel. It has to be a positive environment for everyone. “I am proud to have been here for part of the 50 years, and to have had the opportunity to work with tremendous individuals,” Barry continues. “I am excited to see where we are heading for the next 50 years.” T m

OUR CULTURE AT WORK Barry, Larry and Kent all say our culture has helped their career success, and that it’s the key to our continued strength as a team. “It all starts with who we select,” Barry explains. “Not everyone can work at Averitt Express, because we are different. That is why finding People Like You is so important. When we take the time to search our community, our friends and our family, and we find someone who wants to join our team, they will be a happier associate and also buy in to what we are doing very quickly and produce results.” Larry adds that he’s tried to excel in every role he’s served, and our culture of L ARRY MASON

UNC Health is a not-for-profit medical system owned by the state of North Carolina and based at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Andrew McCollum , logistics and supply chain manager at UNC Health, has the ever- important role of making sure their affiliate hospitals and clinics have the medical supplies they need. JOHN MOSS , our transportation specialist in Raleigh, connected Andrew to our wide range of capabilities, and he shares how our dynamic partnership began. “We started working with UNC Health because they were having frequent service failures with one of our competitors,” says John. “Our relationship started with us handling their LTL outbound freight, until one day they urgently needed to move shipments of respirators. Our specialized services team got involved, and we got the job done. After that, Andrew was having trouble getting some of their local moves across town. He brought this need to our team, and we were able to set up a daily dedicated run to take care of it.” That’s when Andrew and his team experienced the value that Averitt brings to the table, and he realized there is much more we can do than LTL alone. Because of that, Andrew began using more of our unique capabilities for local customization opportunities, expedited services, white glove services, and Averitt celebrates 50 years during a time in history when both the transportation and health care industries have never been more essential. And during this day of real-life heroes, UNC Health Care joins hands with Averitt to supply urgent medical equipment to support local hospitals and clinics. their newest daily dedicated route. Through our growing relationship with UNC Health, we’ve grown our business while providing essential services that empower the heroes in our health care industry. “Throughout the pandemic, Averitt has continued to provide the carrier capacity for UNC Health to reach our affiliate hospitals in the state,” says Andrew. “Whether it was shipping full pallets of isolation gowns and ear loop masks to UNC Rockingham, or shipping ventilators to support a field hospital at UNC Caldwell, Averitt has been the vital link in our supply chain to deliver vital PPE (personal protective equipment) and equipment to support our clinicians and patients.” While there are plenty of transportation companies to choose from, Andrew shares what sets Averitt apart and why our team is the best choice to handle the transportation needs of UNC Health. “What makes Averitt stand out is reliability and consistency in an ever- changing industry,” says Andrew. “It’s plain to see that growth has allowed Averitt to navigate the current industry constraints and adapt to meet our needs. And Averitt’s drivers, sales, and operations teams are always attentive and strive to meet our goals.” Raleigh service center director LOYD MCELVEEN is proud of his team and is looking forward to being The Carrier of Choice for UNC Health for years to come. “This has been a great example of The Power of One, and we’re not finished yet,” says Loyd. “Andrew continues to approach us with additional opportunities. It’s been a great journey to this point, and we are excited about where the future will take us with UNC Health.” We want to recognize our whole team for everything you do to keep our economy moving. You are essential, appreciated, and excellent at what you do. Your efforts have helped us reach our first 50 years as a team, and we’re looking forward to many more to come. T m
