AVOIDING A DEVASTAT ING DIAGNOSIS
CANCER PREVENT ION I S PAR T OF YOUR OVERAL L HEAL TH
No one wants to hear these three words: “You have cancer.” It’s a bone- chilling diagnosis that has unfortunately hit many people and families. When it comes to helping patients with cancer at The Livewell Clinic, we often see them when they’ve already received a diagnosis. They come in wondering how they can address the disease, but at our clinic, we want to address their current circumstances and help them reach their optimal health. The best way to fight cancer is to actively work to prevent it. You should feel free to live the best and happiest life you can without worrying constantly about cancer, but part of living your healthiest life is creating a proactive plan to sustain your body. At The Livewell Clinic, we help patients set up plans for healthy stress management, food consumption, and lifestyle changes, and while this won’t ensure a 100 percent chance you’ll avoid cancer, all of these tactics can be vital in helping you stave off the diagnosis. I often think of health like a timeline, and on that timeline, there are black boxes of diagnosable diseases. Those boxes manifest differently and with varying severity in each person, but each diagnosis has the potential to alter your life. Cancer is one of those black boxes; it’s definable and what medicine works to treat. However, cancer can be prevented. According to research, about 80 percent of cancers are preventable by simply avoiding consumption of certain materials in our air, water, earth, and food. Granted, some of this is unavoidable, but you are in control of what you put into your body. We encourage patients to come to us for a lifestyle change to aid in this prevention, so we can work to catch them before they enter those black boxes. Our goal is to prepare and equip them with the proper tools to fight off infections and inflammation the best way they can. Your health may have different components, but each piece is connected. Changing the way you eat and maintaining a proper work-life balance can improve your
overall health, making your body stronger. The goal of our treatments is to be proactive rather than reactive.
For our patients with a cancer diagnosis, we work with them to find the weak spots in their body’s strength, the strategies it’s using to fight back, and what areas we can improve. At the clinic, we also offer a vitamin C treatment, aimed at squelching the progression of cancer. This treatment has shown great success in studies. We also offer the IvyGene Test to help patients better monitor their health for early cancer detection. The test has been widely studied and can detect cancer early. Learn more about the test on the inside of this month’s newsletter. Keep in mind that we’re not a cancer treatment or cure center; rather, we’re a health clinic. Some of our patients come in looking for help in their fight, while others are looking for comfort and happiness after receiving devastating news. No matter what your situation is, we can help you fight to lead a healthier, happier life.

MEET LYNN LINDBERG
For many kids, picking out a costume is the best part of Halloween. Will they be a spooky witch, a wildcat, or their favorite superhero? There are so many options! But in all the fun, it can be easy for parents to overlook certain risks that Halloween costumes can pose. Here are important safety tips to remember when choosing the best Halloween costume. Look for fire-resistant costumes. Candles inside jack-o’-lanterns and other open flames are everywhere onHalloween night, so make sure your child’s costume isn’t a fire hazard. Most store-bought costumes are made fromfire-resistant materials, but you should still check the labels on all costumes, wigs, and accessories. The same goes when you’re buying fabric for homemade costumes. And remember, fire- resistant is not the same as fireproof. While fire-resistant material takes longer to burn and can be put out quickly, it can still catch fire and cause serious injuries. Remind your child to use caution around open flames and avoid costumes with flimsy, hanging components, like flowing sleeves, long skirts, and capes. Test makeup first. Halloween is a great time to have fun with face paint, and makeup is a good alternative to masks, which can obscure a child’s vision. However, a lot of costume makeup isn’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Before letting your child cover their face inmakeup from the Halloween store, test their skin for allergic reactions by putting just a little bit on the back of their hand first. Practice prop safety. What’s a Jedi Knight without her lightsaber or a wizard without his magic wand? The right accessories can really bring a costume together, but it’s important that props—especially weapon props, like swords, knives, or guns—are not mistaken for the real thing. Choose props that are obviously fake, with round edges made from soft, flexible material. And if your child wants to wear their Halloween costume to school or some other event, check the rules on props beforehand to avoid any trouble. BEST IN SHOW OR HALLOWEEN HAZARD? PASSIONATE ABOUT PATIENT CARE
When a high school friend of Lynn Lindberg’s clued her in to a job opening at The Livewell Clinic, she jumped at the chance to work at a business she believed in. “I was very interested in working for someone who was making a difference in the health care industry,” Lynn says. “It was becoming more apparent to me that we needed that.” Lynn, the clinic’s patient services manager for the past five years, grew up in Adel, Iowa, and has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Drake University. For the past two decades, Lynn has owned her own Mary Kay business, and developing relationships with patients and customers is a passion of hers. In her position at the clinic’s front desk, she’s the first person patients see when they walk through the door, and she enjoys watching the progress of their healing. “I see people come in, and they have that transformation,” Lynn says. “I see them come in, and they’re very sick, and I see them six months to a year later, and they’re happier. I know a lot of patients, and I develop relationships with them … I’ve seen many successes.” Lynn got married in April 2018 and gained three “bonus children,” as she affectionately calls them. She has two biological children as well, and right now her house is full of four growing teenagers. Lynn enjoys biking and hitting the trails around Des Moines. When it comes time to head back into work, Lynn gets excited for that, too. “I don’t mind coming in on Mondays,” Lynn says. “I look forward to it!” The employees and patients of The Livewell Clinic look forward to seeing you around the office, too, Lynn! Thanks for all you do, and keep up your great work.
Halloween is a night for ghosts and goblins to come out to play, and with these tips, your kids can safely dress up and join in the fun.

EARLY DETECTION IS KEY
HOW THE IVYGENE TEST CAN HELP YOU F IGHT CANCER
When you feel a cold coming on, you attack it right away, preparing and equipping your body to fight it as swiftly as possible. Unfortunately, sometimes we don’t think that way about chronic diseases, and instead we ignore the symptoms, putting off treatment until we absolutely need it. Cancer is definitely not one of the diseases we should ignore, and as scientists and doctors often say, early detection puts patients in the best possible position for treatment. At The Livewell Clinic, we value our patients’ overall health and wellness, and unfortunately, part of that means addressing the possibility of developing cancer. We want you to be just as prepared for that as when you battle a cold, so that’s why the clinic offers patients the IvyGene Test for early cancer detection. This simple blood test uses non-cell DNA to identify the presence of cancer and provide information about the disease. Measurements on the normal processing of DNA — called methylation — will identify cancer’s presence. The test can detect cancers in as early as the first stage, and it is validated for breast, colon, liver, and lung cancers.
The test can assist in the detection of an additional 20 cancers, and research to validate these other cancers is progressing.
The earlier we can catch the disease, the sooner you can start doing something about it and attack it before it spreads. Furthermore, at The Livewell Clinic, we can begin an effective holistic regimen to equip you with the strength you will need to battle the disease. For the month of October, we will be offering this test for $200 off. To learn more about how we can get you prepared for your fight, call The Livewell Clinic at 515.279.9900 or visit thelivewellclinic.com .

The Birthplace of Halloween
THE REAL HALLOWEEN TOWN COUNTY MEATH, IRELAND, WHERE HALLOWEEN BEGAN
Fans of Halloween don’t need to look far to find somewhere to celebrate their favorite holiday. There are festive parties all over the world, from New Orleans to London, but if you really want to embrace the spirit of Halloween, there’s no better destination than the birthplace of the holiday: County Meath, Ireland. Every year in Boyne Valley, the residents of County Meath throw a month-long Halloween celebration. The Spirits of Meath Halloween Festival attracts thousands of guests from all over the world, and while this festival has only been celebrated since 2009, many of the traditions observed here date back to ancient times. The ancient Irish weren’t trick-or-treating or visiting haunted houses on Oct. 31, but they were celebrating the pagan holiday Samhain. Over 3,000 years ago, this Celtic festival was born in Meath and marked the end of the harvest. Samhain was celebrated with bonfires, offerings to fairies, and other rituals meant to keep evil spirits away. Many of these customs carried through the centuries and inspired Halloween traditions that are still practiced today.
Today, Meath celebrates Oct. 31 with a blend of spooky thrills and traditional Samhain practices. The Spirits of Meath Halloween Festival starts with the lighting of the first torch fire of Samhain in Athboy, which kicks off a month of fun activities. If you like your Halloween extra spooky, the scream park, Farmaphobia, is waiting for you. And if you’re not a fan of screaming your head off, you can check out the Halloween-themed Spookling Afternoon Tea for fresh-baked treats and spirited conversation. The motto of this all-ages festival is “Fun by Day; Frights by Night,” meaning all the really scary ghosts wait until after sunset to come out. There are plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween, from carving jack-o’-lanterns and eating chocolate to running for your life through a haunted corn maze. And in County Meath, you can celebrate Halloween in every possible way. For more info, visit Discoverboynevalley.ie/whats-on/spirits-meath-halloween- festival-2018 .
