JUNE 2022
If you’re a regular reader of our newsletter, you’re probably expecting me to share a few life lessons and maybe a story or two to accompany them, but this month, I wanted to do something different. The firm recently added a new lawyer to the team who I couldn’t be more excited about. Torrie Dale has been with us since mid-March and has already proven herself to be an incredibly valuable addition to the firm. Torrie is originally from Kansas City, MO, but was raised nearby in Alpharetta where she attended high school. She knew from an early age she wanted to work in the legal field. She had an older cousin who was a lawyer and she always looked up to her, but her main source of inspiration came from the James Patterson books her mom had lying around the house. After Torrie picked up one of those books, Patterson’s work got her hooked on the law, and she knew she’d become a lawyer eventually. G eorgia is a blue-collar state — a grassroots mix of farmland, mountains, and urban development representing ever-expanding opportunities. Being a native of North Atlanta, I have spent most of my life in this fair state, cultivating both my character and my profession as I grew up. Now, I have a distinct opportunity to help those around me in ways I hadn’t anticipated in my younger days. I lead The Lyman Firm as a proud curator of justice for the everyday person, somebody who might not have gotten a fair shake before they met me. I believe one person can be the face of a greater movement,
After graduating high school, Torrie attended the University of South Carolina where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She attended law school at Emory University and during this transition, she gained experience working with various aspects of the law. She initially thought criminal defense would be her focus and even did some really cool criminal investigation work alongside the FBI in Quantico, but her experience in a workers’ compensation office changed her perspective. She took on a workers’ comp case that involved an 18-year- old who had lost his hand in a machine accident. They didn’t want to pay him what his case was worth because he was an illegal immigrant. It blew her mind that they only valued this young man’s life at $300,000 knowing he would never be able to work again. This instance made her want to become a plaintiff’s attorney. Torrie has been working in personal injury law for the past seven years and has now decided to bring her talents to The Lyman Firm. She’s very hands-on and communicative with every client she meets. She’s committed to fighting to get her clients the best value in their individual cases and won’t take anything if it’s not worth their time. She’ll take the insurance companies to trial if need be. When you work with Torrie, you’re going to receive the best possible representation. She will try and get your case resolved as quickly as possible while ensuring you get what you’re entitled to and all medical needs addressed. But don’t let her smile fool you — Torrie is an absolute bulldog when it comes to getting her clients what they deserve. And it’s not all work for Torrie, though. When she’s not at work, you might find her hiking in the mountains or boxing whenever she has a chance. She also enjoys spending time at home with her dog, Mojo, and her cat who thinks he’s a dog, Stormy. We are beyond thrilled to welcome Torrie to The Lyman Firm team. We know she’s going to do great things while she’s here and do everything in her power to help her clients. That’s when I tell them that there are a million different lawyers out there doing a million different things, but when I take on your case for a serious injury or a wrongful deat suit, you’ll remember me as a man who gave you the best possible chance while shooting you straight every step of the way. James and three-year-old daughter Cleo — I am fully i mersed in the fu -loving, homely, and exciting life of my family. They are my foundation, and without them n thing would be possible. But I also have a second family of sorts in my clients, whom I treat with th respect and attention a person is ow whenever they find they’re backed in a cor er and need help. The pleasu e I g t from represen g od, honest people in the courtroom i u rivaled when compared to he other fields of profession I’ve engaged in life. Oftentimes, I ask a c ient to share the names of the attorneys they’ve worked with on other cases. Almost none of th m are able to muster an answer — the names of their lawyers c mpletely lost in the tides of life’s trials.
I began to look for a new avenue to pour my passions into.
and these are the everyday people — the heroes — I work for as I drive our cases forward to the fullest extent within our legal system, fighting f r what’s right. My passions weren’t always for courtroom thrills, though. Growing up in Smyrna, I sought to chase a different kind of rush: the roar of the racetrack. I wasn’t half bad either, eventually taking my hobby for auto racing from amateur status in 2004 all the way to semi-pro in 2007. Unfortunately, like so many other things that went down along with the economy the following year, my racing career crashed in 2008. Shattered by the abrupt end to my racing journey due to a lack of financing, “I believe one person can be the face of a greater movement, and these are the everyday people — the heroes — I work for as I drive our cases forward to the fullest extent within our legal system, fighting for what’s right.”
As we grow older and further away from our t ens and 20s, we begin to realize that life isn’t always about going fast, both literally and metaphorically. It was during my post racing downtime that I realized I wanted to go back to school at Georgia State. After spending years as a writer and editor, I discov red and followed my newfound calling and bega practicing law after graduati g from law school. After years of unparalleled grit, drive, nd success in the field of law, I was fortu a e enough to be able to open my own practice in January of 2018. This new venture has ev n allowed me to work alongside my brother, a paralegal and case manager, in what has been one of the most exciting periods of my lif . For now, our plans for the future include an imminent expansion of the firm and growing the company in ways that still allow us to keep our fundamental values and operations in check.

When It Rains, It Pours A Case Drenched in Disorder
Some people love the rain. After all, there’s something magical about thunder rolling through the clouds as lightning illuminates a multitude of raindrops. Yet, if the storm is too strong — or even dangerous to be in — people might not enjoy it at all. And that certainly appears to have been the case in 1996 when an Israeli woman in Haifa, Israel, sued a television station because of their incorrect weather report. The weather forecaster, Danny Rup, predicted that the day would be beautiful and sunny, but the weather had a mind of its own and ended up being rainy, dark, and gloomy. Because the woman relied upon the accuracy of the report, she left her home without a raincoat or an umbrella and got caught in the pouring rain. As the old wives’ tale goes, if you get caught in the rain, you’ll catch a cold. Well, the woman claimed that after being exposed to inclement weather, she caught the flu and subsequently was out of work for four days, had to visit the doctor, and spent $38 on medicine. Due to such a daunting experience, she also said that she suffered additional stress from the entire situation. The woman ended up taking Channel 2 news station to a small claims court where she sought financial compensation to cover her sickness and suffering — as well as an apology from the
forecaster who wrongly predicted the weather. The woman stated that weather forecasts are legally binding.
Many of us would see this as a frivolous lawsuit, but the TV station settled out of court and the woman received $1,000 for her pain and suffering and an apology from Danny Rup. Despite this case, most people take weather predictions from television and radio forecasters with a bit of skepticism thinking that forecasts are just a well-educated guess based on available resources — and it can change on a whim. It’s just the nature of it!

cases, a victim’s stalker is someone they know or were once in an intimate relationship with. While it’s always important to never engage with your stalker, you can take certain steps to protect your safety and well-being.
To keep yourself safe, what can be done? Of course, if you are ever in immediate danger or if someone has made a credible threat, you should call the police right away. Be sure to carry a charged cellphone with you at all times for this reason. If someone is following you, seek out the nearest safe place to go, whether it be a police station, fire station, public place, or a friend’s house. Always trust your instincts: If you feel like something is wrong, it likely is. If you feel like someone may be taking an unnatural interest in you, begin varying your routines and routes a bit. Be careful when posting on social media; don’t give out information about where you live, work, or enjoy hanging out. Lastly, try to avoid going places alone. Exercise with a friend if you can and walk to your car with a coworker after work. Stalking is a serious problem and many people assume that ignoring the behavior will take care of the issue. In most cases, that doesn’t happen. When people stalk other people, they violate boundaries in order to make

The 5-Second Rule Will Make You Sick 3 Health Myths You Probably Believe When many think of stalking, the common image is likely a stranger prowling around in the shadows of the night, showing up at random places uninvited, or spying on victims from afar. However, stalking can potentially involve so much more. Is Somebody Watching You?
BOTTLEDWATER IS SAFER THAN TAP WATER
The official stance from the John Hopkins Arthritis Center states, “There is no evidence that cracking knuckles causes any damage such as arthritis in the joints.” Still, chronic knuckle- cracking can lead to reduced grip strength, so you might want to break the habit anyway. You’ve probably heard these myths for years, but just because something is common knowledge doesn’t mean it is true. With information so easily available, always take the time to research the facts, especially when it comes to your health. stalking at some point in their lives. For women, roughly 54% experienced it before the age of 25, and for men, 41%. Research conducted by the CDC revealed that stalking can damage its victims, leading to potential depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s reported that roughly 68% of female and 70% of male victims received threats of physical harm in connection with stalking at some point in their lives. Stalking is menacing behavior that makes victims feel unsafe and can lead to some terrifying acts. Stalking is more common than you may think: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in every 6 women and 1 in every 17 men have reported experiencing
We live in the golden age of information. The answers tomany of life’s questions are just an internet search away. Despite this readily available wisdom, we still have a bad habit of believing health-relatedmyths. Here are three popular health“facts” that are total works of fiction.
Seeking out safer water alternatives increases the sales of bottled “spring water” each year. However, bottled water is more expensive, bad for the environment, and, as Dr. Morton Tavel of the Indiana University School of Medicine pointed out, over 50 percent of bottled water is just filtered tap water. The same effect can be achieved with a home filtration system. Of course, if the tap water in your area has been contaminated, bottled water is a safer alternative. However, in most circumstances, bottled water is no healthier than tap water.
THE 5-SECOND RULE KEEPS FOOD SAFE
Obviously germs and bacteria don’t really wait five seconds to pounce, but snatching your chip off the floor fast keeps most of the germs away, right? Not according to a 2006 study published by Dr. Paul Dawson. He found conclusive evidence that when food comes into contact with a contaminated surface, bacteria are transferred immediately. Even one second spent on tile, wood, or carpet is enough to infest your food with salmonella or another serious contaminant.
CRACKING YOUR KNUCKLES CAUSES ARTHRITIS
Stalking — Here’s How to Handle It
Stalking takes place when a person repeatedly harasses or threatens another person. In most
The connection between knuckle-cracking and arthritis came from studies where participants self-reported their habits. Modern medical research has shown these results to be false.
