The Momentum July-Sept 2020

Dear Momentum Readers,

As the Director of the Alpine Area Agency on Aging, I am excited to announce that due to our organization evolving with the ever-changing current of the times, we felt it was time for our brand to match our spirit and love for the aging community. We are now Vintage. To me and my team, Vintage means that we respect the passage of time and our lives within that passage. We value the past but also treasure and cherish the future. This rebrand represents that future we all hold so dear. As the world is changing drastically, we want to meet the rising needs of our community and look to the future. You’ll begin to see communications from us that look different, but we promise you, our commitment to older adults and high-quality partners and services remains the same.

Please join us on this journey as Vintage debuts and enjoy the summer issue of our beloved Momentum Magazine.

Sincerely,

Erin Fisher Director Vintage

The name Alpine Area Agency on Aging in the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments is lengthy, confusing and has a lack of approachability to our clientele and partnerships. We started considering a name change and new branding strategy after countless people over many years struggled saying, remembering, and describing our organization. We decided to move towards a less bureaucratic and more client-centered model and name. The definition of Vintage includes “recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality,” and that’s precisely the vision we have of the older adults and their caregivers that we serve.

National UV Safety Month

4 Ways to Protect Yourself from UV

UV is ultra-violet (UV) radiation exposure and studies show it is the cause of most skin cancers. UV radiation is at its highest when and where the sun’s rays are the strongest, meaning it is stronger at higher elevations and around noon on a clear sunny day.

Protect yourself this month and all summer long from the Colorado sunshine!

1.

2.

Limit your time in the sun and stay in the shade when you can.

Wear protective clothing to block UV light such as a hat and clothing with SPF.

3.

4.

Use a Broad Spectrum SPF of at least 15 SPF and reapply frequently

Wear sunglasses to also protect your eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts.

Vintage has a transportation voucher to suit your needs. The voucher program works in two ways: 1. You drive yourself and receive mileage reimbursement. 2. Someone else drives you, and we pay them or reimburse you for payment. Who is Eligible? If you are 60+ and live in Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin or Summit counties, you may qualify. NEED A RIDE?

Everything you need to know Herbal & Prescription Drug Interactions

Herbal & Prescription Drug Interactions

According to American Family Physician, nearly 25% of U.S. adults report concurrently taking a prescription medication with a dietary supplement. This means many of us take herbal remedies that may interfere with our prescription drugs and that there may be unknown (or known and serious) complications when we do so. As an example, many times prior to surgery, you are recommended to not take echinacea due to a higher instance of liver complications. There are tons of different kinds of herbal remedies and supplements in all different kinds of forms such as pills, powders, teas, usually derived from plants. Remember that herbal supplements are not FDA- approved medicines. They may have many benefits. But they aren't as reliable and safe as prescription medicines and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.

The definition is: a product made from a plant that is thought to be useful in treating disease or staying healthy. Herbal Supplements
