LET’S GET GIGGIDY WHO’S PLAYING WHERE?

Fast forward three years and we’ve arrived at destination WTF. The world seems as if it’s more out of kilter than ever. But. People are slowly, but surely coming out of hibernation. The way we look at it here at ‘The Music Zine’, is that if you turned 30 this year, consider yourself 27 again. Regress and rejoice in this newfound youth (loophole? technicality?) and dive back into your favorite hobby, all-things live music. Let us be your all- seeing third eye. Dial in your pineal gland to our frequency and reconnect with your fellow gig- goers. Here we aim to refocus an otherwise scatterbrain, Jackson- Pollock, higgeldy-piggeldy, world that is the Toronto band music scene. We will list all bands that reach out to us that are active currently, within these pages – where they’re playing, who they’re serenading. Their shows will be listed for the month of this edition. Maybe, just maybe, our readers will step outside their musical comfort zone and find themselves investing in new local talent. Take the leap of faith involved in associating with a band’s message, style, melodies, and live performances.

Our manifesto is as follows: “IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT. BUT IF IT’S BROKE, PULL UP YOUR BRITCHES AND WRITE A FUCKING ZINE” Having been laid out like a junkie in withdrawals, starved of human contact, realizing that we DO need each other, faced with the accumulation of our life-choices, and adapting and un-adapting to a new framework for life, doesn’t some good ol’ fashioned moshing sound like the best fucking idea on the planet? Or maybe you want to lock eyes with the smelly hippie playing Oasis covers on their battered Yamaha acoustic guitar – we don’t judge. We have you covered, and will direct you as directly as possible to your musical destination. We hope to be honest, hold no punches, and become enlightened as to why we are apparently in one of the musical capitals of the world (Toronto, for those of you, God forbid, who are reading this outside of Canada) and maybe 10 bands in 10 years have broken into international fame. Join us on this journey of learning, honesty, exploration, and enlightenment. Repeat after me, “IN THE MUSIC ZINE WE TRUST”

CASPER SKULLS LET’S PICK THEIR BRAIN “Chats with Melanie St-Pierre”

Whereas when you're trying to establish yourself, you don't have that right away, so it's tougher. So the power does lie in those bands, hopefully bringing out smaller bands, sort of thing. And everyone's kind of waiting out for those opportunities. And now they're just competitive, right? […] So yeah, it's just different. But it’s still happening, and everyone's still trying to make it work. I KNOW YOU GUYS HAVE PLAYED WITH PUP A LOT. HOW DID THAT RELATIONSHIP START? We always knew each other in the scene, we didn't know each other very well. But I think Stef may have come out to one of our shows. I can't really remember how it started. But we ended up talking at one of the shows. And then all of a sudden, a year or so later, we got an offer to hop on a tour with them. That's the tour that we did in the States. And then we got to know each other really well. And we all really, really connected on personal levels. […] it was fantastic. And such a wonderful tour. Also with Ratboys as well. Like they are just phenomenal people. […] And so it was one of those tours where everyone just like loves each other and feel so fondly about each other, fast friends, everyone's just having a good time. It had just been so blessed to have them reach out and have us do more stuff with them. Especially post-pandemic. It’s just been a really beautiful friendship that blossomed out of just meeting each other and liking each other’s music. ARE THERE ANY SMALLER OR LESS WELL KNOWN VENUES THAT YOU’VE COME ACROSS, IN ONTARIO OR OTHERWISE? I'm from a small town called Sudbury, Ontario. That's where I was born and raised, and I love playing the Town House Tavern, like plug for the Townhouse, it's just one of those bars that's like, everyone in town that loves music goes to. You will see your friends there. You don't even have to invite each other out, like you'll just be there. It has an awesome energy and lots of cool bands have played there in the past. It's just the legendary bar here, a lot of Canadian staples would come through and play there, it's just awesome. GOOD TO HAVE A SHOUT OUT FOR SUDBURY! YOU WERE LIVING IN TORONTO BEFORE?

Yeah, half the band is still there. We are still in Toronto a lot for everything because the industry is there. But I got a job too, here [Sudbury]. I work for a company called Cultural Industries Ontario North, and I take care of the music industry here, I take care of all the music sector, like development stuff […]. So anybody who's a Northern Ontario musician, I help them. I give them advice on what to do, I help them build a plan for their release, I help them if they want to book a tour, I can help them create an artist bio, I can help them do an EPK, I can help them apply for […] factor grants […]. Like, that's my job right now, which I love. Because […] I basically get to help people coming out of an area that I came out of. I didn't know about any of that stuff when I was a kid starting out and now it’s so cool to have that resource. And we do that for music and for film. […] It's so needed. I've met so many incredible, Northern Ontario musicians that I didn't know about, that reached out because […] ‘I just found your resource’. I get to connect with these people – I still talk to and help people that I met when I started my first week on the job […]. And we're still working on things. I just want to continue doing that. I think my favorite thing to do is to help people. I honestly think it’s my favourite thing to do. BUT IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR FORMER SELF WHEN YOU WERE JUST STARTING OUT, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? OR SOMETHING THAT YOU WISH YOU KNEW? Don't be afraid to reach out. […] You never know who is listening and you never know who's gonna like your music. And when I was starting out, I was like, self-deprecating, thinking that no one cares, that no one's gonna like me, you know what I mean? But then, you never know what just reaching out and making a connection could do. Like, sometimes that’s the beginning of something. Sometimes that’s what just gets the wheels turning. That's the advice I'd give, just put yourself out there. That's all you can do. Especially right now.

DO YOU HAVE ANY EXAMPLES? OR A SPECIFIC

SITUATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE RUN INTO BEFORE THAT PLAYED OUT DIFFERENTLY NOW? I guess the

CASPER SKULLS, WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? I'M SURE YOU GET ASKED THAT A LOT. It's actually a fun story. So Neil (lead guitarist) and I were reading a book together called, ‘I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp’. And it's by Richard Hell, who’s […] like, the godfather of punk […] And him and Tom Verlaine, which is another just like, godfather of awesome stuff. […] Basically, they used to be really good friends and were writing poetry together. And one of the nom de plumes that one of them wrote for their poetry was Caspar Skull. So Neil and I, when we read that, we both were like, 'oh, that's really cool!' […] that'd be such a cool band name one day, so then we just changed it to Casper Skulls. And then yeah, when we started the band, we were like, OK, dig in for that! CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR TOUR IN MARCH THROUGH ONTARIO AND QUEBEC? It was good! Again, it felt really weird at first, we had to really get used to it. And remember that, ‘oh, yeah, drives are long!’ But as soon as we got into the flow of it, it just felt good. And it felt normal again, and that's where we’re at with it right now, that it feels a little bit more normal. […] We've got some festival dates coming up this summer […]. We get to do festivals in a normal capacity this year. Because last year, we played festivals in the COVID capacity. That was, obviously interesting, but now this year, things are going to be at normal capacity […]. So yeah, it's different each show. And each place and each province, it’s all different - just getting used to it again. And it's all a new relationship, the relationship that we had with it before was different than the relationship now. Or like, the shows were different. I don't even know how to explain it. It’s just like, a vibe.

eagerness. Everyone just seems so much more eager now. Like they really want to talk to musicians, they really want to see musicians, they just want to be part of that again. And I guess just for us, it feels like bands have a different relationship with it now. No one really wants to go on a grueling solo tour anymore. I've talked to so many different bands, they're just like, ‘it's hard for us to do that right now’. COVID is still a thing. So if we got COVID, we'd have to cancel those dates. If we're headlining those dates, and it's just us, we're relying on fans for draw, that is scary, what if we're out there, and then we get COVID and then we have to self- quarantine. And then we have to pay for all this hotel time for all of the band […]. I've heard so many interviews with bands that are, our size or larger or whatever, and they're all going through that right now. And it's scary and they just don't know what to do. So everyone's just trying to kind of do it in a healthy way, when it makes sense. To try to do things in the right way, like still protect ourselves and still take care of ourselves. I’m seeing a lot of that lately, standing up for the artist and like protect the artist. Before, it was just a shit show of bands going on tour, losing money, sleeping on floors […]. And now with COVID in the mixture, we still kind of do it here and there but it's tougher now. SO BANDS ARE BEING MORE SELECTIVE, THEY DON’T FEEL AS OBLIGATED TO TAKE ANY TOUR OPPORTUNITY THAT COMES THEIR WAY, AND BEING MORE SELECTIVE ABOUT WHERE AND HOW THEY CHOOSE TO TRAVEL? Yeah! And the power really does lie in the bands that are bigger, because bands that have fans, when they tour they make a lot of money. I mean, like they have a crew they have to pay, but like they have a guaranteed fan base coming out.

The writers here at ‘THE MUSIC ZINE’ being musicians, find ourselves often repeating the line from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’ – “IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME” Instead it goes more like, “If you build it, we will come” (so hard and so fast, like a fucking honeybadger who likes to slap the bass with their vicious little claws). Hopefully the Universe has received our message and offerings and will answer some time by late August ‘22. If by the grace of God some finance mogul who likes to pump some ‘Tool’ at full blast in their headphones reads this article, please hear our message. Because as it stands, it seems the only way a new band can get their hands on a monthly rehearsal space, is by inheriting one from the last will and testament of the band who sublets it to four other bands, who incidentally, only plays 5 times a year and doesn’t rehearse, but stores a full backline, touring hardcases, two drum kits, and four duvets in the jamspace. “IF YOU BUILD IT, WE WILL COME”

TECH TALK WITH OUR IN-HOUSE MUFF DIVER

AMP SET UP His first amp setup from pictures is quite an interesting one. He used a Roland RE 201 Space Echo Tape Delay unit (which he would have used for reverb and delay effect, and also to get some compression). This was then hooked up to a small Marshall combo amp. It's unclear from photos as to which model combo amp. Noel used the Marshall combo to get the classic Britrock crunch sound that he loved. That was then hooked up to a Vox AC30, specifically, the clean channel of the Vox as to not over-distort the guitar, whilst gaining the legendary Vox AC30 tone. The Vox was replaced soon after by a WEM Dominator 25W tube amp. Following this setup, Noel changed to the full Marshall stack, which is seen on multiple past Oasis tours. PEDAL BOARD In 1994/1995 it’s hard to say exactly every pedal he used, but there are 3 pedals Noel definitely used: -Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer (Absolute classic) -Boss DD-3 delay -Vox V847 Wah There are rumors and speculations that he also had a Boss SD-2 Dual Overdrive and a Boss CS-3 compression pedal in the mix as well but these are not as certain. him as the chief songwriter and lead guitarist of the generation- defining UK rock band, Oasis. There is not one person alive that has not been in a nightclub or bar at 2 in the morning, screaming at the top of their lungs, the words to ‘Don't look back in anger’ or ‘Wonderwall’. Both of these songs are worldwide bonafide bangers. The most iconic part of these songs, apart from the catchy lyrics and the Mancunian vocals, are the delicious guitar melodies and tones. Noel has never done any interviews about his gear, or even really talked a whole lot about his pedal choices or amp selection, so this is a tricky man to do a gear run down on, but we at THE MUSIC ZINE like a challenge. Let's get into it….. GUITARS In 1994 before the release of ‘Supersonic’ Noel used an Epiphone Les Paul standard version, in cherry sunburst. As seen in the music video for ‘Supersonic’. Noel then upgraded to a Black Gibson Les Paul Custom, that also had the iconic Oasis sticker on the body. On their first US tour Noel was seen using this, but also a Gibson Les Paul cherry sunburst that was gifted to him by the equally legendary, Johnny Marr (lead guitarist of the band The Smiths).

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED

For all our complaining, bitching, and moaning, we like to remind ourselves that the reason anyone should do anything, is because they love what they do. And we love music, through and through. And there is no better feeling than writing (who physically writes music on paper anymore?) material that people pair with milestones in their lives… The playlist you play in the car on your third date driving down to Lakeshore hedging your bets that you might get you some. The songs that remind you of the time you went camping in Algonquin and forgot the cases of beer but ended up doing 7g of golden teacher and traveling back in time in another dimension. The anthems you listen to on a Tuesday evening in an otherwise futile attempt to escape your existential dread… If we’ve learned anything, it’s that the songs carry the most weight. Invest in your songs. Be a perfectionist, or don’t, so long as you get your message across. And if you’re not humming your own tunes in your head on repeat, unfortunately, they just don’t cut the mustard. The sure-fast, most concrete way of standing out amongst the crowd, is to have certified bangers in your catalog. If you aren’t belting out the lyrics or headbanging to your tunes on full whack in your car while commuting from A to B, then invest some more. Don’t be afraid to put your ego aside and admit you don’t know everything. These two tests are constants in the universe and will never lie to you.

Don’t be afraid to try. Fake it till you make it. Belief sometimes comes before the evidence. Push your comfort zone out a 3 story window. Because what’s the worst that can happen if you: • Actually try to pursue the holy grail of day jobs, playing music for a living. • Act the part and feel like a fake, no one fucking cares. • Believe in yourself even when your songs on Spotify, that you self-produced, don’t do you justice – or maybe you only fully formed a month ago but the jams you have feel like the best thing in the world. • Step outside your comfort-zone, growing and developing personally. Heaven forfend you might actually make it in the music business and thank THE gracious MUSIC ZINE in your Grammy award speech.
