2021 CENSUS
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHANGING HOUSEHOLD COMPOSITION • Nationally, the share of adults aged 20-34 living in the parental home remained constant at 35% between 2016 and 2021. This, however, was driven by a decline in the share of younger adults at home (those aged 20-24) and an increase in the older 25-29 and 30-34 year old age groups. • In comparison, roommate households experienced the fastest growth of any type of household. Roommate households in BC increased by 24%, to around 160,000, for 15- 34 year olds. This was well above the 15% increase Canada-wide, for this age group. • In 2021 one-person households represented the highest share of Canadian households since Confederation in 1867. Now accounting for almost one third of all households, this change was driven mostly by younger adults as it declined among older Canadians.
