HIGHLY INSPIRING EVENT WITH MANY MEMORIES MADE

Clerkenwell Design Week in May was just what the design community was craving for after a challenging couple of years. This made the festival even more special and many old friends got to meet up for the first time in years. It was a true celebration of brands and designs, and the whole creative community coming together. Havwoods were thrilled to be part of the event. Our showroom, the much-loved Routemaster Bus and the Prosecco van were visited by many guests old and new throughout the three days. Our fabulous talks and showroom activities were popular and created some great conversations!

LOCATED IN THE HEART OF ST ALBANS IS THE BEAUTIFUL SAMUEL RYDER HOTEL BY HILTON. ACROSS THE ROAD FROM THE CATHEDRAL AND WITH SHOPS, MARKETS AND PICTURESQUE COBBLED STREETS JUST A SHORT WALK AWAY, THE HOTEL IS PERFECTLY PLACED FOR A LUXURIOUS WEEKEND BREAK. The epitome of contemporary elegance, this stylish hotel features a range of on-trend accents including a terrazzo reception, characterful panelling and light wood oak details for a scandi-inspired touch. To complete the look and deliver a herringbone floor covering with an abundance of elegance, Havwoods was specified to provide a solution across the reception, bar area and also main restaurant. European Oak and Cottage from the V Collection were selected in 70mm character grade boards; these engineered planks work perfectly to tie the scheme together. Benefitting from inherent knotting, these two warm shades complement each other beautifully and provide a seamless flow across the communal areas of the hotel.

With the help of Havwoods, The Samuel Ryder Hotel boasts a boutique floor covering to match its ultra-luxurious interior scheme.

AT HOME IN ONE OF LONDON’S FORMER DOCKS IS THE WAPPING APARTMENT, OWNED BY INTERIOR DESIGNER LAILA PATEL. A SPECIALIST IN RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS, LAILA COMMISSIONED HAVWOODS TO GIVE HER FLOORS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE, WHILST ALSO ADDRESSING CURRENT DESIGN TRENDS. Blanco Prime 120mm Herringbone from the Venture Plank collection was selected and used throughout the upstairs across the hallway, living space and dining room.

The soothing colour palette, curved furniture and natural fabrics in the living room pair perfectly with the floor, while in the dining room, the design is contemporary with electric blue dining chairs and a statement pendant light.

The neutral tones and flowing pattern of the Herringbone however creates a seamless flow between the rooms, complementing the natural light and giving a true feeling of space, tying together the two themes.

THE BRIEF FOR THIS UNIQUE RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT WAS TO CREATE A LUXURIOUS HOME THAT IS LIGHT, COSY AND MODERN WITH STUNNING DETAILS AND NATURAL TEXTURES TO PULL THE LOOK TOGETHER. COMPLEMENTING THE HOME WITH DEPTH AND STYLE, HAVWOODS’ STUNNING FENDI PRIME PLANK AND HERRINGBONE BOARDS WERE SPECIFIED TO ADD A BEAUTIFUL TONE TO THE INTERIOR. Used throughout the main hallway and living areas, the Fendi boards add a spacious and uplifting appeal whilst accentuating the existing classic décor. Plush velvets and relaxed linen fabrics have been beautifully placed throughout the rest of the property alongside hints of antique brass, bespoke wooden furniture and modern silhouettes for added character.

Statement light fixtures have also been strategically placed to yield a sophisticated glow of elegance throughout — resulting in a home perfect for entertaining.

DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE 3,000 PEOPLE, THIS STATE-OF-THE-ART BUILDING IS THE FIRST OF BT’S NEW FUTURE- FIT OFFICE PROGRAMME LAUNCHED AS PART OF ITS ‘BETTER WORKPLACE PROGRAMME’. With a design brief to transform everyday routine, enhance efficiency and enable the brand to better service its customers, this new open-plan office is comprised of high-quality services including smart building technology, flexible workspaces and collaboration to allow employees to excel.

To provide a seamless solution throughout to contribute to the sleek, on-trend look and feel of the new workspace, Havwoods was specified to supply a long-lasting wood floor. Aspen Raw from the Venture Plank collection was chosen.

With its character grade and warm wooden hues, this 1-Strip patterned board reflects the natural light beautifully and pairs well with brightly coloured furniture and steel joinery.

When it comes to choosing your forever floor, the overall effect is characterised not only by your choice of colour but also by the natural grade of the wood, the surface finishing technique and the pattern. The type of pattern plays a leading part in the flooring portrait, so once you have decided on a colour scheme, use the following guide to help you choose your favourite; from the popular plank style, a more adventurous pattern such as Herringbone, Tumbling Dice or Chevron, or maybe something more dramatic like the design panels available in numerous designs and shades.

MAKING THE GRADE THE FIVE MOST TYPICAL TIMBER FLOORING GRADES OFFER A GUIDE OF WHAT YOU MAY SEE. THE BOARDS ARE USUALLY SELECTED BY EYE AND THESE PARAMETERS ARE SIMPLY A GUIDE. CURRENTLY NO INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR TIMBER FLOOR GRADING.

PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood and filler, if any at all. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.

SELECT Typically, this grade will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots of a limited size. Expect some variation in tone from heartwood and sapwood as well as small checks (cracks across the growth ring). There will be some filled elements, such as broken knots. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch.

CLASSIC Classic Grade floors show the natural variation of timber without allowing some of the more characterful features in more rustic grades. Planks with very few knots will be mixed with some planks containing larger knots or checks (cracks across the growth ring) which may be filled. Variation between tone from heartwood and sapwood can be expected but is controlled. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch. CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch.

NATURAL/RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch.

TECHNIQUES AND CHARACTERISTICS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THESE OUTSTANDING FINISHES, THE WOOD WE OFFER HAS TO GO THROUGH VARIOUS PROCESSES WHICH AFFECT DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SOMETIMES COLOURED OILS ARE ADDED TO PRODUCE AN EVEN MORE DRAMATIC APPEARANCE.

SAPWOOD

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesn’t react to such treatments to the same degree. (The effect of these treatments on planks containing sapwood is shown left) By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD ARE PURELY NATURAL AND THESE ARE EXPLAINED BELOW.

KNOTS & FILLERS

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown here.

MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

SMOKING AND FIRING GRADES

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

PATTERNS THERE ARE VARIOUS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DESIGNS OR PATTERNS AVAILABLE. STANDARD PLANK IS THE MOST COMMON STYLE BUT YOU MAY DECIDE ON SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING LIKE A HERRINGBONE OR CHEVRON.

This is sometimes known as plank, strip or boards and is available in many different lengths and widths.

HERRINGBONE

Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’ ‘Basket weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

CHEVRON

One of the more visually impressive patterns combines geometric angles with directional flow. Our chevron pattern floors have a 45° angled point and the alternating rows deliver a stunning two-tone aesthetic.

FINISHES NO MATTER YOUR CHOICE OF FLOORING THERE ARE DIFFERENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE DEPENDING UPON YOUR PREFERENCES FOR BOTH THE FINAL AESTHETIC AND YOUR DURABILITY NEEDS. UNFINISHED Allowing you to be the artist, this is a completely natural surface, without treatment. It’s up to you to finish how you wish. Unfinished timber can include different grades of character so all you have to do is re-sand the surface once installed, and create using the blank canvas. LACQUERED This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden oor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic. OILED Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the oor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled oors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage. UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Combining the wear advantages of a lacquer with the subtlety of oil, this nish is micro-porous, water-repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. It will not crack, ake, peel or blister. VALOUR UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Valour is a film-forming oil that allows the surface to be layered like a lacquer but retains the appearance and characteristics of an oil. It is scratch and impact resistant and offers the hardest wearing oiled finish in our range.

The HavSeal seal of approval is awarded to those products that exceed the already high standards needed to ensure entry into our portfolio. Not only do we consider the origin, the legality and sustainability of each of the products, but we also take into account the energy that goes into production of the product, the chemical content of the product as well as the mill’s commitment to re-using its waste.

The Green Seal award is given to the products that offer extra international accreditation, identified as coming from sources that offer higher standards of energy use and waste generation.

Hand Grade is a high quality, high performance, pre-finished engineered board of triple layered construction, with a nominal 6mm wear layer of European oak, WBP birch ply core and European oak base. It comes in a choice of two surfaces. One is a 19mm thick plank with micro-bevelled edges and a smooth sanded surface; the other is a sculptured, rounded edge board, +/-23mm, with a textured, highly characterful appearance due to natural colour variation, undulations, and even visual scarring like natural water markings and those from the drying process. Both surfaces are finished with Hardwax Oil and the entire collection is suitable for use over underfloor heating. Hand Grade planks are FSC® certified timber (FSC-C009500) and Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Silver.

Your chosen product will then be manufactured to your specification, with your personalised samples used for itensive quality control purposes throughout the production process.

The stunning Henley collection is best described as a pre-finished plank with texture. This collection offers a high performance, superior-quality surface. It is an excellent choice for high footfall areas and for those exposed to heavy-duty use. The textured surface of Henley ensures that any superficial scratches and marks are naturally disguised without distracting from the floor’s original aesthetic. Sawing, brushing, burning and planing techniques are applied to the Henley wood flooring to add character. At the same time every Henley product is tested to ensure that the processes involved to create these textures do not weaken the structure of the wood itself. Henley features plank, herringbone and design panels with the traditional tongue and groove fit profile plus our exciting textured click-system offering.

PurePlank is an affordable FSC® (FSC-C009500) certified engineered plank, herringbone and chevron. The boards in this range include both 14mm and 9mm thickness, and the diversity in finishes in this superior collection lends itself to a breadth of applications from single residences to the largest multi-residential complex. The product’s triple layered engineered construction involves a solid oak surface bonded to two layers of softwood ensures stability and all-round performance. A variety of widths and finishes are available including UV oil coating, which provides a hardwearing surface that also enhances the wood’s natural characteristics. The engineered construction of the PurePlank range ensures that the product can be fitted over any underfloor heating. The Havwoods click-fit system makes the installation of PurePlank exceptionally fast, which is a huge advantage in any large-scale projects.
