The “ Dog Days of Summer ” are here. We have heard this statement almost every summer, but where does it come from? And what does it have to do with dogs? This period is from July 3 to August 11. Some people will tell you that the “ dog days ” signifies hot sultry days that are “ not fit for a dog, ” others suggest it ’ s the weather in which dogs go mad. The phrase is actually a reference to the fact that, during this same time, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Siri- us, the brightest star visible from any part of the Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. This is also why Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.

In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the sun. On July 23, specifically, its path through the sky mirrors the Sun. Because the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the Sun ’ s warmth. Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment.

Now, that we all know where the saying came from, how do you beat these “ dog days? ” One of the best ways to cool your body temperature down is by cooling your pulse points (wrists) and the back of your neck. Located at both the comfort stations, the Golf Staff has provided cold towels. We hope these help you beat the hot days. Please return the towels after use for proper laundering and daily replacement.

Save the date! The Fitness Center is celebrating it ’ s 5 Year Anniversary on September 21! There will be more information coming to you soon about the event. We are excited to celebrate 5 years in our beautiful fitness facility. Heading into the summer months, it is more important than ever to stay hydrated! Here are five simple tips to help you stay hydrated: (1) Drink the right amount of water for your body, half your body weight in ounces is the recommended amount (2) Keep a water bottle with you during all of your activities (3) If you find that you tend to forget to drink your water, set an alarm as a reminder

(4) Monitor your caffeine and alcohol intake, as both can lead to dehydration (5) If plain water is hard to stomach, or just gets boring, add some flavor.

We had a wonderful turn out at our first annual Memorial Weekend Murph and will be doing it again next year. If you missed your chance to participate, we will have a fun 4 th of July themed workout July 2 with Kelli. Be sure to register for class. Our summer aqua classes are back! You can try out Aqua Mix, a TABATA - style aqua class on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. for the entire summer, and get your heart rate up while splashing in the pool. If you want to slow it down, we have Aqua Barre and Yoga on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. where you can tone your muscles and get a good stretch in, all while staying cool in the water. August brings us our next Blood Drive with OneBlood. Be sure to mark your calendar, August 8, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If it is your first time donating in 2022, Patty Dimetres will have a wonderful “ Thank you ” gift for your life saving donation. Keep an eye out for our August Meditation theme and date, with Sue Deyo.

Wimbledon Callawassie Style will not be held on the grass this year with the golf course construction underway. But we will be having a Wimbledon tennis round robin on the clay courts on Friday, July 10. Put on your best Wimbledon white tennis attire and come out and enjoy the tennis and the festivities. More information is to follow by email blasts as we get closer to the date.

With the summer weather ’ s temperature increasingly getting hotter, we now have the Pickleball courts reservation hours beginning at 8:00 a.m. Stopping time is still 6:00 p.m. For tennis we may begin at 8:30 a.m. and play until 9:00 p.m.

We have three mixed doubles teams playing USTA this year, and their playing schedules are posted on the Callawassie Tennis bulletin board. Next month our Combo league will get underway.

See you at the courts!
