Every great company starts with a single good idea. For TZ Medical, that idea came from a vascular surgeon who, in the late 1980s, dreamed up a product he hoped would revolutionize the medical industry by controlling bleeding after dialysis procedures. Our soon-to-be founder, Tom Tribou, helped bring the physician’s product to market, shepherding that brilliant spark of an idea through the manufacturing process and all the way to distribution. Watching that spark become reality lit the tinder of Tom’s entrepreneurial spirit. In 1990, he sat down in a Portland coffee shop to plan the course of his new company, TZ Medical. Under its banner, Tom hoped to help more physicians, nurses, and technologists bring their dreams of new medical devices off the drawing board and into the lab, making patients’ lives easier along the way. On that first day, Tom made two bedrock decisions. The first was that TZ Medical would turn the paradigm of medical equipment manufacturing on its head by taking the time to listen to medical professionals on the front lines — like the surgeon who started it all — and meet their needs directly. The second was that it would keep its products at value prices to ensure those bright ideas made their way into the hands of critical-care medical professionals as quickly as possible. With those goals in mind, Tom set out in search of more ideas, and TZ Medical’s portfolio of devices for cardiac cath lab, electrophysiology, and interventional radiology labs grew from a handful to a host. A few years ago, TZ Medical was purchased by Trent (Tom’s son) and John (Tom’s son-in-law), but the company’s Core Values and family-based culture continue to be the guiding principles of our success. Today, we help innovators by designing prototypes of their devices, developing them, and putting them on the market. our advisory board of cath lab staff from all over the country before it’s handed off to our 13-strong team of engineers. We specialize in Class 1 and 2 FDA-approved products and focus on unique, problem-solving “sparks” that we think could make a real difference in people’s lives. Once one of our devices hits the market, the inventor earns a royalty of the gross sales, and doctors and patients get a bit more confidence and peace of mind. Though we aim to release four products each year, in 2019 we’ve been ahead of schedule, dropping five groundbreaking devices into the market in just seven months. We’re proud of everything we produce, but we’re particularly excited about our latest release, StandTall. Designed by an interventional radiologist out of Nebraska, it’s an external vascular sheath extender that conveniently redirects workflow to the right side of the table during left radial artery procedures. Using one makes the process more comfortable for patients, who can pronate their hand during the procedure, and physicians, who can “stand tall” instead of stooping uncomfortably and battling left-arm drift. Those small improvements change lives, and for Trent and the rest of us on the TZ Medical team, it’s that positive impact on the world that makes our work fulfilling. It’s fun to partner with health care professionals who may not have the resources to bring their own products to market and help make their dreams a reality. Even better, we’ve found that because cath labs nationwide face the same problems, we’re able to elevate an innovation out of Nebraska to help physicians across the country. Everything we do is sparked by ideas from professionals like you, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

FROM LIGHTBULB TO LAUNCH THE 6 STEPS WE TAKE TO MAKE BRIGHT IDEAS A REALITY For TZ Medical Associate Product Manager, Sarah Gilroy, the best part of her job is meeting the people whose ideas spark the products we bring to market nationwide. “I like being able to communicate with that stakeholder and see their excitement in their invention, then communicate that excitement to my own team,” she says. “I’m the liaison between the engineering, marketing, contract, and management departments here at TZ Medical, so I’m basically the good news holder, sharing excitement throughout all of those departments.” If you submit a product proposal to TZ Medical, Sarah will be your point of contact through our six-step development process, which takes brilliant ideas from the first lightbulb moment all the way to launch. The first step is the proposal, where the submission form is sent directly to Sarah. From there, a successful idea moves on to the market research phase, then to product approval if we think it meets a need. Next, our engineers design the product and we subject it to testing to ensure it will earn regulatory approval. Finally, we launch it into the marketplace, activating our sales force across the country. Depending on how fleshed-out the initial product idea is, that process can take anywhere from six months to a few years. The steps might seem intimidating, particularly to first-time inventors, but our friendly staff — spearheaded by Sarah — works hard to make it as easy as possible and answer stakeholder questions. “Yes, it’s a process that can be overwhelming at first glance, but even if you’re just curious, feel free to email or call,” Sarah says. Though we specialize in products for the cardiac cath lab, interventional radiology, and electrophysiology labs, we’re happy to hear about any innovative ideas for the medical field. HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PROTECT YOUR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND YOUR BUSINESS
Intellectual property is defined by Merriam- Webster as “property (such as an idea, invention, or process) that derives from the work of the mind or intellect.” As you can no doubt glean from this definition, intellectual property can be a lot of things, so it’s important to identify and protect you and your business’s intellectual property. Here are the main categories and protections for your company’s creations.

COPYRIGHTS Most people seek protection under copyright law for a variety of things related to their product or business, like images, specific words on packaging, labeling, the actual product, and the business webpage. The best thing about copyright registration is that it’s inexpensive. Plus, the law allows you to demand attorney fees from those who infringe on your copyright. PATENTS Patents are a fantastic way to protect your designs, and companies have utilized patents to maintain their competitive advantage. A great example of this strategy is when Sony Pictures patented their animation style for “Spider- Man: Into the Spider Verse” which grossed over $375,502,565. There are two types of patents: one for utility (function) and one for design (aesthetic). To apply for a patent, register with the United States Patent Office. Regardless of the type of intellectual property you have, it’s important you identify what type it is and which type of protection is most appropriate. Even a small amount of intellectual property is worth protecting, so start the process now to safeguard it.
TRADE SECRETS A trade secret is any useful piece of information that the public doesn’t know about and the owner has taken steps to protect. If you have taken the steps necessary to protect your own trade practices, you may have a case if you ever discover your trade secret has been leaked. Having your employees sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) is a great way to initially establish your unique business practices as trade secrets. TRADEMARKS The name of your business, product, or service — anything a customer uses to identify a product — generally requires a trademark. This may include your company’s name, product name, etc. Think of the distinctive Nike “Swoosh”
