Welcome to the Spring UK regional newsletter
I n March we announced that the firm will be merging with BLM, a UK based insurance focused firm which specialises in casualty, healthcare and regional professional lines defence. The merger is all about meeting our strategic objectives of building and maintaining market leadership positions in our chosen sectors, in this case insurance. You will, I hope, have had a chance to join one of the webinars explaining the merger and updating you on the integration. You can find more details in this newsletter, including a Q&A with Matthew Harrington, BLM’s Senior Partner. This is a really positive move for both firms as we build a market leading casualty insurance practice and compete in what is a very dynamic part of the market. We are excited to welcome our new colleagues when the merger goes live on 1 July and I would like to thank all the teams and individuals across the firm who are working so hard to get ready for go live and the integration process that will stretch many months into the future.
As we head into the summer months we can reflect on what we’ve achieved so far. Not only have we continued to win and service mandates across our practices but we also announced and started work on the second biggest UK law firm merger in history.
We recently announced our annual promotions to the Partnership and to Legal Director. It is fantastic to have such large cohorts for both sets of promotions, globally and in the UK, and on behalf of the UK Board I would like to congratulate all those promoted. You can read more about our new Partners and Legal Directors in this newsletter. This newsletter also shares our progress against our strategic priorities this calendar year, along with news from across our region and upcoming activities and initiatives. You will find details about a range of Corporate Responsibility & Inclusion initiatives which have taken place, including the recent launch of the wellbeing app Champion Health. You can also read about the launch of our Clyde+ Information Hub, find details about our recent client and panel wins and read some of the feedback we have received from clients. If you would like to find out more information about any of the topics covered in this newsletter, what is coming up in the future, or you have a story you would like to share in the Summer UK newsletter please email [email protected].

Stronger as one
In March we announced that our partners had voted in favour of a merger with BLM. This followed detailed discussions over many months, including with clients of both firms, and we are excited to welcome BLM colleagues into Clyde & Co when the combination goes live on 1 July.
T he merger is in line with our firm’s strategy – to build and maintain leadership positions in our chosen sectors, which are insurance, aviation, projects and construction and what we now call EMNR (Energy, Marine and Natural Resources). While we are undisputed leaders in insurance law globally and number one in the UK broadly, a strategic review in 2020 identified opportunities to be gained by significantly strengthening our UK casualty insurance offering, our regional professional liability offering and our healthcare practice.
coming together with BLM was the preferred option. The reasons for this were good client and panel alignment, cultural fit and an expectation that combining the two firms would be favourably viewed by clients and the market. Integration plans are well underway and you will receive inviations to meetings to find out more about the integration. In the meantime if you have any questions about the merger, please first refer to the FAQ document which you can access here. If you would like to submit new questions, you can do so here.
We looked at several ways to grow the Casualty practice and concluded that

Introducing Matthew Harrington, Senior Partner at BLM
Ahead of the combination going live in July Matthew Harrington shares his views on why the merger is a positive development for both BLM and Clyde & Co.
Tell us a bit about your career so far. I joined BLM as Partner in 2007 to set up its Cardiff office and in 2010 extended the firm’s footprint by helping to create a new office in Bristol. Because I joined from a small firm I had quite a mixed practice doing everything from large loss injury, occupational disease and health and safety cases. My practice such as it is now leans more towards Health and Safety. Leading BLM as Senior Partner over the last four years or so as has been a privilege – our experts are second-to- none and we are all very positive as to what the future holds after 1 July. I am very proud to have been at the helm as Senior Partner and see the firm become a market leader in so many areas particularly our suite of award-winning innovative business solutions and work with the London School of Economics.
What does the merger mean to you?
across the regions, as well as elevate our healthcare practice to the top echelons in the UK. Clyde & Co is absolutely the right choice for BLM.
When I became Senior Partner in 2018, I clearly set out my ambitions for the firm which were to continue on our journey in becoming a market-leading insurance and risk law firm. I’m very proud that we achieved that in lots of areas. Now almost four and a half years later, as the market rapidly changes and businesses are consolidating, including our clients, the advantages of a merger with Clyde & Co were obvious. Not only do we share common values, the merger will strengthen our position as an insurance and risk expert with enhanced global capabilities. Clyde & Co’s strategic objectives are very similar to ours and provides us with the much needed growth to develop our business for the benefit of our people and our clients. As a merged firm, we will be the market leader in casualty and extend Clyde & Co’s London Market offering to market leader position
How are the integration plans going?
The integration is going very well, we are working so well with our Clyde colleagues. As you can imagine there are a lot of moving parts during this process and the priority here has to be the wellbeing of our people so we are working hard to ensure the integration is as smooth as possible for all. I’d like to thank everyone from BLM and Clyde & Co that are working tirelessly to support the transition ahead of July.

Carol joined the firm on 25 January 1999 working in our Guildford office as a Payroll Administrator, and on retiring was Senior Payroll Advisor. Carol is celebrating her retirement by going on a well-deserved holiday to St Lucia and, on her return, plans to spend lots of quality time with her grandchildren, as well as on the golf course and in her garden.

25 years
After 46 years of service Gordon Keyden retired at the end of April. Gordon was brought up in Kilmacolm, educated at Glenalmond and he completed his law degree at Durham University. He went on to sit his bar exams in London but quickly decided that the City was not for him and in 1976 returned to Scotland, securing a job at Simpson & Marwick.
Siobhan Mullins , Partner – Casualty (Manchester)
Susan Barclay , Paralegal – Casualty (Edinburgh)
Lorraine Callow , Hub Leader – Employment & Pensions (London)
Across more than four decades Gordon built up an impressive practice of many well known insurance and self insured clients. For many years he also acted for clients in occupational disease and later specialised in catastrophic and large loss claims. He took over as Managing Partner of Simpson & Marwick in 2012 and was one of the driving forces behind the merger with Clyde & Co.
We wish Gordon well in his retirement and, as a keen golfer, on the links.
