The University of Exeter estate comprises over 360,000 square metres of academic, administrative, commercial and residential accommodation on 430 acres of land across Devon and Cornwall. We are currently in the early stages of a programme to invest c.£450m to deliver the physical and digital environment we need to support world-class research and an internationally excellent education, accommodating our students and our world leading academics in exceptional teaching, learning and research spaces. The Senior Building Surveyor plays a leading role in the delivery of the University’s investment in its estate by planning and delivering a range of strategic maintenance, refurbishment and alteration projects across the University estate portfolio. You will undertake strategic planning activities in relation to the prioritisation of long-term maintenance investment whilst leading the design, procurement and delivery of estate improvement and development projects typically in the £50k to £5m value range.
This role gives an individual the unique opportunity to gain building surveying and project management experience on one of the most beautiful and diverse estates portfolios in the UK.

Main purpose of the role
This post offers the opportunity for the successful applicant to build upon existing building surveying skills, taking responsibility for the project management of major capital building projects with a value from £500k to £5m; the design, costing, financial control, administration and supervision of minor revenue works and maintenance projects, with individual values up to £1m; survey work and other general building surveying and estate management duties. In addition, the post-holder will be expected to take an active role in strategic planning of workload and project programmes, in conjunction with the Assistant Director, Built Environment. Technical • Provide advice and decisions in all matters relating to the University’s built environment, including health and safety and statutory issues. • Work with stakeholders to define and produce the project brief for both consultancy services and works. Produce PIDs and PEPs and other standard documentation in line with the EDS QMS system. • Act as project manager on complex capital projects, leading multi-disciplinary teams (external consultants and/or in-house staff), liaising with internal and external stakeholders and external contractors. Control project budgets, develop and maintain programmes with responsibility for delivering projects on time and to the required quality. Financial Management • Maintain budget control of individual building projects and multi-project programmes. • Authorise, issue and validate payments, orders and variations, compile and agree final accounts for projects. • Act as authorised signatory for invoices and purchase orders up to £10,000 • Follow procedures for the operation of any VAT management schemes. • Provide cashflow and other information for government returns and internal monitoring purposes • Submit claims against external body funds identified for particular projects.

Contacts Will interact with a very broad range of senior staff across the wider University including College PVCs and DCO’s, Professional Services Directors, other senior CIOSS staff and Project Working Group members. They will also have contact from time to time with the Deputy Vice Chancellors, Committee members, members of the Guild Executive and students. External contacts include contractors, suppliers and consultants, and contacts at government bodies, institutions, other organisations and the public. Other Duties • Update the Assistant Director, LTM, Minor Works & Estate Management, regarding progress and any other relevant factors on a minimum weekly basis. • Check and arrange signatures for contract and other legal documents. • Consult with the University solicitors on legal matters relating to building development/ tenancies. • Act as mentor to junior members of staff and work experience students. • Participate in team meetings, including updating the team with recently attended CPD events. • Will go about duties in a resource efficient way, minimising impacts to the environment wherever possible.
