AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020 Bites
WE’RE OPEN FOR BUSINESS!
A Few Changes — The Same Great Care
After having been closed for a few weeks in reaction to COVID-19, it’s wonderful to finally be back again, ready to serve the community we love. Our office is officially open for all regular dental services, and although we may no longer be able to accommodate walk-ins due to new health and safety procedures, we’re still welcoming pre-scheduled appointments via our online portal or by calling our office. We implemented a phased reopening to stagger the number of patients we saw and keep activity at a safe level, and even during these limited visits, it was wonderful to finally start seeing both fellow team members and patients again. When you spend so much time with such a close-knit team, work relationships become second nature, so you don’t give life without them much thought. But seeing how happy everyone has been to see each other and get back into the swing of things tells me that I wasn’t the only one missing this place. Although it’s been nice to feel some sense of “normalcy” once again, we also feel it’s vitally important to let our patients know that our office has gone through some significant procedural changes. Our goal with these new practices is the same goal we’ve always had: to put the health and well-being of our patients first. • When you schedule an appointment, you’ll be asked a list of screening questions so we can make sure it’s safe for you to visit us. • Between then and the day of your appointment, if you or a family member has any flu-like symptoms or comes into contact with anyone who’s tested positive for COVID-19, we ask that you please reschedule.
• We request you wear a mask in all common areas of our office.
•
Be prepared to answer additional screening questions, have your temperature scanned, and sanitize your hands prior to sitting in our chair. You’ll notice our staff wearing extra layers of personal protective equipment (but we’re still the same great people underneath it all!).
•
•
We’ve also increased our sanitizing and disinfecting methods between every single patient visit.
It might feel like a lot of changes to tackle at once, but if we work together to do our part, we can provide everyone with the safety and sense of comfort they need to get the dental care they deserve. This pandemic certainly hasn’t been easy to get through, but every day, we’re all finding ways to push through it and look forward to things to come. The extended time at home with my family hasn’t been without its challenges, but I wouldn’t trade these unforgettable experiences for the world. We’ve helped two of my kids prepare to start college, spent time with our beautiful granddaughter, gone on bike rides, walked the dog, and hopped in the car for an occasional drive. On quiet nights, we might all watch a movie, take solace in the little things that make us happy, and appreciate having each other to enjoy them with. It may not sound like a lot, but during trying times like these, it’s everything.
From our team to you and your family, we appreciate you and look forward to seeing you again. Stay safe.
-Dr. Rigby
• In order to maintain safe social distancing, we’re asking
patients to either wait in their cars or wait outside when they arrive for an appointment. Call our office and a team member will walk you through our screening process.

Turn Household Chores Into Effective Exercise YOUR ‘CLEAN’ WORKOUT ROUTINE
•
PICK UP: Instead of simply bending over to pick up toys or clothes, do a squat with every item you grab. Remember to use
Everyone knows how labor-intensive cleaning can be. A long day of scrubbing down your house is a great way to work your muscles and get your blood pumping, so crank up some tunes, grab a mop, and get ready to transform your cleaning routine into a great workout.
your legs, not your back. You can also do squats while unloading the dishwasher or with any other chore that involves repeated bending.
•
WIPE DOWN: Whether you’re wiping windows or scrubbing appliances, do big, exaggerated arm circles until your muscles start to burn and make sure you’re switching arms as you go. • COOK: It’s not cleaning, but it’s still a chore with useful downtime. While food is simmering or thawing in the microwave, do some pushups, situps, or planks to get your muscles moving.
To get physical benefits from cleaning, you need to turn up the intensity of your methods. Exaggerate your motions, pick up your pace, and keep your abs tight and knees flexed. Nearly any chore can be turned into an exercise, but here are some ideas to get you started.
•
VACUUM: Vacuum briskly nonstop for at least 20 minutes, switching arms as
you go. For an added challenge, do lunges as you vacuum and remember to keep your toes pointed straight ahead and your knees bent at 90-degree angles.
You can implement dozens of exercises to turn mundane activities into beneficial workouts. Some chores will burn more calories than others, but every bit of activity helps. Now’s the time to work your way to a cleaner house and a healthier you.

THE LOWDOWN ON SLEEP APNEA What It Looks Like, Why It Matters, and How We Can Help You
You may know your dentist as an expert in all things brushing, flossing, and oral hygiene, but did you know that dentists can also diagnose and treat serious medical conditions? For centuries, general medicine and dental science were rarely linked. Today, we know there are many connections between oral health and overall health, including gum disease contributing to heart conditions and bad breath helping diagnose chronic diseases. One of the more prevalent conditions that shares a link between your mouth and your body is sleep apnea. Experts estimate that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, yet (other than snoring), the public is largely unaware of its symptoms.
But here’s where your dentist can help. Airway obstructions often cause the disorder. Your airway and breathing abilities include a space your dentist is very familiar with: your mouth. Excessive weight, family history, the position in which you sleep, or the growth and positioning of your palette and tongue can all cause this obstruction. Dentists can assess your symptoms and the make-up of your mouth to determine if sleep apnea — or another disorder — could be causing your symptoms. With a proper assessment, your dentist can then prescribe various treatment options. These include therapies, the use of a nightly oral device, or referrals to experts who can offer surgeries and fittings for CPAP machines. Sleep medicine is a team effort, but don’t neglect the serious role your dentist can play in your treatment. If you believe you’re suffering from sleep apnea, let your dental team know on your next visit or call our office today to schedule a consultation. Better sleep may be just what the dentist ordered.
TAKE A BREAK TAKE A BREAK In addition to regular snoring, sleep apnea sufferers are often plagued with insomnia, lethargy, irritability, headaches, depression, stroke, diabetes, heart conditions, and sinus issues — among other symptoms. Sleep apnea is also a deadly disease. In fact, it’s what killed NFL defensive player Reggie White and contributed to the death of actress Carrie Fisher.

IDAHO HUMANE SOCIETY If there’s one thing we know about Boise, it’s how much we all love our pets! The Idaho Humane Society has made a name for itself when it comes to rescuing animals, finding them loving homes, and protecting pets from cruelty. To make this possible, the organization relies heavily on volunteers, foster families, and donations. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can volunteer or foster animals — Give Back

RIDGE TO RIVERS One of the biggest perks of living in the Treasure Valley is the trail systems we have sweeping through our region and into the foothills. Because of the efforts by Ridge to Rivers, many of Boise’s foothills remain active for us to use, no matter the season or the state of the world. And you can help keep it that way! Trained volunteers can join the ranger program, which involves patrolling local trails and educating hikers, bikers, and others about trail etiquette. Others can adopt local spots and provide cleaning and maintenance to that portion
of the trail. If you’d like to give money, Ridge to Rivers uses these funds to continue maintenance. Learn more and find updates at RidgeToRivers.org.
