Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability DIRECTORY 2019

Introduction The Doctoral Program in Educational Sustainability explores social, environmental, and economic sustainability within an educational framework. Because of the interdisciplinary and global nature of the field, the School of Education (SOE) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) include SOE faculty, UWSP faculty and staff and broader affiliations of scholars and practitioners providing opportunities for scholarship and professional contributions in teaching, mentoring, serving on dissertation committees, and guest presenting. Through this program, students will not only engage in an opportunity to study with experts in their area of focus, the program will foster opportunities to engage with a network of sustainability educators.

Brief explanation of Project: Participant-Observer at the “Climate Strong! Professional Development Institute” July 7 to July 12, 2019. I will be assisting with the institute which will take place in Northern Wisconsin. It is based out of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin. Activities will take place at the center and in the surrounding Bad River and Red Cliff tribal communities. As part of the residency, I will work closely with Cathy Techtmann, Environmental Outreach State Specialist and Professor of Community Development for the Community Development Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Division of Extension. The program is part of the “Climate Strong! Climate Leadership Initiative.” Rationale for Committee: Conducting a study with Indigenous people must take into consideration Indigenous ways. The composition of this committee includes Dr. Parajuli who is indigenous to Nepal and understands alternative philosophies and regenerative perspectives. Dr. Rice is of Mohawk and has experience working with Elders as knowledge keepers. Dr. Johns Danforth is Oneida and has worked with Wisconsin Indigenous people. These three have experience with culture and Indigenous philosophies. It is important to have members that will provide an insiders perspective. All members have experience working with teachers of science and/or social studies.

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week “boot camp” for future decision makers eager to join the sustainability and energy revolution happening around the globe. The program includes talks from business and academic organization around the globe on

sustainability. It also consists of site visits to sustainable facilities such as the Argonne National Lab. It also includes researching into real world concerns affecting our planet. The culmination of the program is a group project that tackles a real-world sustainable problem within a Chicago community that is then presented and ranked with the other groups. Description of Study (Names Next to Points of Support): My study will be to develop a reporting framework for smaller municipalities under a population of 50,000 on the Triple Bottom line of Sustainability. This framework will be categorized in a business framework modeled after the balanced scorecard (Robinson). I will also seek to study the process of quantifying the results of environmental, economic, and social impacts on a comparative basis in some economic fashion. (Segura III). The whole project will have to be developed in a way that successful implementation of policy will be possible within the guidelines of municipal organization. (Odogba).

Brief explanation of Project: During my Applied Residency Project I will be completing the research portion of my dissertation. Goals will include recruitment of participants, scheduling of interviews and conducting interviews with participants of the Women’s Leadership Institute at Lakeland University. Rationale for Committee: Committee members were selected based on background in feminist theory, higher education, curriculum and course design and transformative learning theory. Committee members bring a wide array of experiences that will inform my research and help guide me to fulfill the requirements of an Ed.D. in Educational Sustainability.
