3 WAYS YOU CAN BOOST YOUR MENTALITY PROTECT YOUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Sleep Regularly If you’re someone who thinks you can thrive off less sleep, you may want to think again. A 2018 study found that those who slept less were more likely to incur negative thoughts throughout their days. Experts believe this is because a lack of sleep causes your brain to run on fumes, which means you’re more likely to respond and act emotionally. Set up a schedule for more meaningful sleep. Put away all screens at a certain time, read or meditate before bed, and create a bedroom space that’s relaxing. Soon, you’ll be drifting into dreamland and more emotionally prepared for the next day. Talk to Someone It’s not admitting failure to seek professional help or support from your friends. If you’re struggling with your emotions or reactions, consider sharing your concerns with a trusted friend or loved one. Social interactions have a powerful effect on our emotions, and sometimes, finding a friend or relative you can lean on is the support you need to cope. Other times, you may need to seek professional help. A counselor or therapist can provide you with the necessary tools to react, respond, and think about your life in a more meaningful way.

As a personal injury law firm, a lot of what we do focuses on the physical components of injuries and collisions. We examine the ways in which injuries impact our clients’ lives and the physical evidence from the incident to tell the story. But what many people may not realize is that a large part of what we do every day also involves the emotional and mental well-being of our clients. In addition to physical complications of getting injured, our clients are often battling trauma from their injuries and adjusting to a new life. The toll that takes on a person’s mentality can be just as painful. In these instances, we will often file what are called emotional distress claims. After a crash, a client can sustain post-traumatic stress, increased anxiety, depression, and other mental health complications. This can require professional intervention and a new approach to their everyday lives. In these cases, we file an emotional distress claim to help clients combat

the anxiety and stress that can come with healing emotionally and mentally from a car crash.

This is a process and type of claim that is very common in personal injury cases, and it’s easy to see similarities between these claims and what’s happening in the world right now. In December 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau reported an 11% increase from the year prior in the number of people who said they were struggling with depression and anxiety. Additionally, rates of these ailments are growing among younger generations. We can all guess why this is happening, but as someone who works regularly with those who are navigating these emotions and diagnoses, I have a unique understanding of how important it is that we all address our emotional well-being, regardless of our circumstances. This month, I’d like to share a few ways you can protect and boost your emotional well-being, whether you are dealing with an injury case or just struggling with your own mental health for other reasons. We could all use this list at certain points in our lives, and my hope is that you’ll find it useful. Stay Active You don’t have to be an Ironman athlete to reap the benefits of exercise. Take a walk, go for a swim, ride your bike, or do yoga. Whatever it is you choose to do, just move your body with intention regularly to boost your mood. Exercise isn’t a cure-all for depression or anxiety, but it can be a simple way to stave off a few of its symptoms, like stress or feeling groggy. Plus, a small burst of exercise just might give you the energy to do other things!

This November, I hope you take time to consider your emotional health. It’s an important component of who we are, and we deserve a healthy mind.

‘100%Recommend Giving Them a Call’

“I had an amazing experience with

VanMeveren Law Group! Paul and the rest of the staff were beyond helpful in assisting me through my situation. Being an out-of-state college student and not being familiar with Colorado law, I felt really lost on what direction to go in with the car accidents I was in, and the guidance they provided me was super helpful. I would 100% recommend giving them a call if you’re contemplating finding a personal injury attorney in Colorado.” –Leah K.

Have a Low-Stress Holiday 3 TIPS FOR A MERRIER TIME

The holidays are right around the corner, and while many people can’t wait to eat turkey and swap presents, others only see stress on the horizon. Especially for those hosting parties, between decorations, big dinners, excited kids, and visiting family, it can all feel overwhelming. If celebrations are happening at your house this year, here are three tips to lessen the strain and keep up the holiday cheer. Recharge First Ensure you’re rested and recharged before the holidays by taking time to relax, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that make you feel good. When you’re rushing to get everything done, it can be tempting to skip self-care routines, but that will cost you in the long run. Your daily exercise and other health activities keep you balanced and ready to face challenges head-on. Get Started Early Holidays always arrive faster than we expect, so begin preparing early. If shopping for presents is a pain point, don’t wait until the last minute. Decorate earlier than you need to — or better yet, get the kids to do it for you. There’s only so much cooking you can do ahead of time, but ensuring you have all of the equipment and nonperishable ingredients you need a few weeks in advance will reduce both your workload and anxiety. Don’t Expect Perfection The sooner you let go of the idea of a “perfect” holiday, the sooner you’ll be able to have a happy one. Face it: Something will go wrong. Whether it’s an overcooked dish, a child throwing a temper tantrum, or your uncle talking politics at the dinner table, nothing will ever go just how you planned. So, embrace the imperfections. Whether you’re celebrating this year with a group of two or 20, holidays can be a stressful time — but they don’t have to be. With these tips, your festivities may not be picture-perfect, but they will be a lot of fun.
