Protection Team News HINDSIGHT IS 2020

VOL 13, ISSUE 1

Did you know that we can now literally say that hindsight is 2020 for the first time in history! Just a small factoid for you to start off the new year. Not only is 2020 behind us, but if things keep progressing, COVID-19 will also be behind us — and we will be back to the way things used to be. My family is getting the vaccine as soon as we’re allowed, including my wife who is just waiting for her oncologist to give her the green light that it is safe with her medications. The vaccine will be a huge step toward getting out of our isolation “bubble” and out to enjoy life again. Speaking of enjoying things, Melanie and I sure enjoyed having both of our girls home for the holidays; we got to spend a lot of quality family time together again. Just like all good things in life, they have now come to an end, and the girls have returned to college. So, it’s time for our empty nester’s routine again. Hopefully, all of you had a great, safe time over the holidays. The COVID-19 infection numbers are going up here in Florida, but let’s hope it’s a blip on the radar and not the beginning of more restrictions. Many resolutions come with the new year along with time for reflection. When I reflect back on 2020, many bad things occurred, but honestly, we had just as many good things to be thankful for in the end. I hope 2021 will be better for all of you and we can move quickly past the pandemic. One of the bright spots in 2020 was that the state of Florida did not take a major direct hit from a hurricane like we did in previous years. Another bright spot was that the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup — and the river parade. Only in Florida! The Tampa Bay Rays also made it to the World Series — just one game away … This year

in February, the Super Bowl will be held in Tampa. Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Tampa Bay Bucs could host the Lombardi Trophy as the winners of the Super Bowl! That would be one for the record book! In a few short weeks, the Lightning will be back on the ice trying to defend their championship with a very different team than those who won the cup. The Rays will soon begin their season after their ascent to the World Series last year. They too will also have a different team this season. Oh well, just blame it on COVID-19 or 2020 while we still can. Until next month, –Darren

'BUT IT’S A COMPANY CAR!' Your Guide to Commercial Auto Insurance asd Picture this: You’re headed up to Savannah for a business trip, and you’re driving a company car instead of flying. It’s a long drive, and it gets a lot longer when a deer steps in front of the vehicle! You aren’t injured, thankfully, but the car sustains serious damage. Who pays for it? The answer is simple: your company’s commercial auto insurance policy. Commercial policies cover vehicles owned by businesses, and when you stop and think about it, that’s a lot of vehicles. Semitrucks, taxi cabs, company cars, delivery vans, and more — all of these automobiles have to carry commercial auto insurance. These policies tend to be larger than your personal auto insurance, with higher premiums to match. There are two reasons for that. First, insurance companies assume that commercial vehicles will see more use than personal ones. That may sound funny if you’ve ever driven by a business park and seen all the company cars lined up, but for every one of them, there are two delivery vans being used 24/7 by a variety of different drivers. The second reason for higher policies and premiums is that commercial vehicles are often worth considerably more than private automobiles — semitrucks, for example, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

THE TRUTH ABOUT DARK CHOCOLATE As you give and get chocolate for Valentine’s Day (or jump on post-holiday chocolate sales), you’ll probably hear that dark chocolate is healthy for you. Before you decide to incorporate dark chocolate into your daily diet, you should ask yourself what that means. Can dark chocolate really be “healthy”? Studies on dark chocolate’s supposed benefits focus on compounds found within cocoa, specifically flavanols, which are found in most fruits and vegetables (and cocoa!) and help lower blood pressure and reduce low-density lipoproteins, aka “bad” cholesterol. By that notion, dark chocolate does have heart health benefits, but taking advantage of those benefits is not as simple as just eating dark chocolate. Each bar will include a percentage, which indicates the amount of cocoa. The higher the percentage, the better; 70%–80% is considered the sweet spot in terms of balancing health benefits and flavor, but as the percentage of cocoa increases, the more bitter the chocolate becomes. However, the amount of flavanols found in a typical 1-ounce piece of 80% dark chocolate is very small. Alice H. Lichtenstein, a Gershoff professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University in Boston, says, “Dark chocolate has more flavanols than other types of chocolate; the >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6
