WHY YOU NEED FLOOD INSURANCE
VOL 13, ISSUE 9
Unfortunately, this month, I am writing about the aftermath of Hurricane Ida hitting family and friends in Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Northeast. Yes, this one storm has ruined a lot of people’s lives and left billions in damage. The initial images we have all seen should be an eye-opener for the rest of us. I will say it one more time: Get a plan now and be ready to leave, especially on short notice. A number of people interviewed have said that they didn’t have a lot of time to get out and were stuck at home to ride out the storm. Not only did they not get out, but a number of people also did NOT have flood insurance, thinking that their elevated home wouldn’t flood. Guess what! The water washed away the pilings and took out the entire home. Please do NOT wait until the storm is staring you down to try and get flood insurance. It will be too late. If you asked a number of residents of New York City, New Jersey, or even Philadelphia if they have flood insurance, the answer would be NO. Bet they wish they had it now … As I have said for many years, it only takes one storm to ruin your year. Ida just ruined a lot of people’s years. To make matters worse, Ida hit Louisiana on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans. I don’t think the State of Louisiana will ever forget Aug. 29, with two very devastating storms hitting the state on the same date in history. Enough of the depressing news — let’s talk about what’s right in Tampa Bay! First stop is the Tampa Bay Rays. They have continued to lead the American League standings, beating the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, as well as many other teams they have been facing. The

Rays have a “never give up” attitude with all of the games they have come back in the 8th and 9th innings to win. If they keep up this pace, they will get the top playoff position in the AL and will watch Boston and New York battle it out to make the playoffs. Go Rays! Lastly, we need to shout out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have recently completed training camp and will be in the regular season when you are reading this newsletter. They made it through camp without any significant injuries. They are also one of the first NFL teams to be completely vaccinated. Go Bucs! Until next month, –Darren

INDUSTRY EDUCATION Boat and Marine Insurance Owning a boat in Florida is fun, exciting, and rewarding. Believe it or not, heading out on the local water to watch the sunset or go fishing is possible without boat insurance. Boat and marine insurance are not required by law in Florida to be able to own and operate a boat. However, if you took out a loan and used your boat as collateral on that loan, most lenders will require that you have insurance in the event that damages occur to your boat. If you decide to store your vessel at a marina, you will also be required to have insurance on your boat in case injuries or damages take place. Just because boat and marine insurance is not required in most situations does not mean that you shouldn’t carry it. If your boat is worth more than $1,000, we highly urge you to carry coverage. Usually, coverage for vessels is limited to about $1,000 and will only be applicable for certain types of damages to your boat.
THANKS, BUD!
Baseball’s Former Commissioner and Streaming TV
You don’t become America’s national pastime without learning how to adapt — and Major League Baseball (MLB) made the ultimate pivot. This October, MLB’s biggest stars and teams with the most wins all-time will take the field for the 2021 playoffs. The winners will be crowned champions of the world, but the league these champs call home already own an equally prestigious title: the founders of streaming services. Their legendary reign started back in the early 2000s, when former MLB commissioner Bud Selig asked every team in the league to contribute $4 million for the creation of Baseball Advanced Media (BAM). At that time, the dot-com bubble had yet to burst, and Selig wanted America’s once favorite sport to “keep up with the times,” so to speak. BAM created a website for each team, but it soon took on other qualities that gave it an edge. The Hustle reports that BAM offered online video, multidevice watching services, and a large >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6
