Walking for a Cure in Your Own Neighborhood

Walk to End Alzheimer’s With Us on Sept. 26!

A lzheimer’s and dementia do not discriminate. clergy members, and farm workers. It’s always devastating to watch this disease take hold of our clients and dominate their family’s lives, as clients can lose their memories and speech and the ability to walk, eat, and swallow. Personalities change, yet dementia is different for everyone. Regardless, it’s heartbreaking to watch. We see great people who have accomplished so much and contributed greatly to society end up with no memory of the beautiful lives they created and the people who they have touched and loved. Visiting Angels has cared for hundreds of people with a memory loss diagnosis, including doctors, dentists, lawyers, professors, carpenters, plumbers, As caregivers, we see this often, and we grow close with the families we care for. I once was told by a client’s daughter that she and her family could not have survived without the care their father received from Visiting Angels. She said they truly were angels. It was the support from our care managers and caregivers, she continued, that guided their family through the disease. This included how to redirect her father when he would ask to go home or when he would ask when his wife, who had passed more than 40 years ago, was coming to visit. This isn’t uncommon for many who suffer with dementia, and how we respond can be important for the client’s peace of mind and the family’s mentality throughout the progression of this disease. Beyond caring for her father, we also provided her family with the opportunity to just be his family. They didn’t have to become his primary caregivers. They could hold his hand, sit with him, and hug him when he needed comforting without having to worry about his immediate needs. Their roles didn’t have to change because of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

In honor of this man, his family, and the countless other families and clients we have guided through Alzheimer’s, we participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s every year. This year’s walk will look a little different than past events, but we invite you to participate with us — however that may look! This year’s walk will be held on Sept. 26, which is Walk to End Alzheimer’s Day. The organizers are encouraging anyone who wants to participate to do so individually or in small groups. Participants can walk in the park, on hiking trails, around their neighborhood, or even just on the treadmill. By walking and raising money and awareness, we help fulfill the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association and gain a better understanding of a disease that, as of 2019, has impacted more than 5.8 million Americans of all ages. Visiting Angels participates in the walk every year, in addition to various other events we often host to raise money. In the past, we’ve hosted tennis tournaments, garage sales, and silent auctions with donated items from our wonderful community businesses. We do this for the very same reason that we walk every year, rain, shine, or pandemic: to fund research and education, to raise awareness for prevention, and to ultimately find a cure. So, we are asking you to join us, however you can! Whether that’s walking in your neighborhood or asking your loved ones for donations, you can make a difference in the countless lives touched by a dementia diagnosis. Please join the Visiting Angels’ team and help us raise money and awareness together by checking out our page on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s website at Act.Alz.org/goto/visitingangelscentralcoast.

Thank you for your support. “See” you out there!

Personalized Homecare ... When You Need It ... From People You Trust!

Do What You Love and Keep Your Body Moving

How HIIT Benefits People of All Ages

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the best ways to burn fat, build muscle, and give yourself a better chance at a longer, healthier life. HIIT workouts are characterized by brief periods (30 seconds to a few minutes) of high-intensity exercise, followed by periods of low- or moderate-intensity exercise. However, what makes these workouts truly remarkable is just how much they can benefit people in every age group. According to Mayo Clinic research, HIIT workouts provide unique benefits to the body on a cellular level. The brief, vigorous exercises actually increase your metabolism and improve the health of mitochondria, the powerhouses that create energy within the cells. By energizing your cells, you can actually reverse the decline in muscle health that occurs as people age. Energizing cells through HIIT benefits everyone, but these workouts can be of particular benefit to those over age 65. Seniors experience diminishing returns on energy produced by their bodies at a cellular level, and HIIT has been shown to reverse that process even in advanced age.

HIIT workouts also have many other advantages for people of all ages. The exercises don’t necessarily require any

equipment, and you can even see results from adding high-intensity intervals to daily walks. Those with health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, can still participate in HIIT. In fact, Healthline reports that HIIT workouts can reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. However, the biggest draw to HIIT exercises is just how much of a timesaver they are. A few minutes of high- intensity movement can be just as beneficial as roughly 45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise. You can incorporate HIIT exercises into whatever activities you enjoy, such as walking, cardio exercises, and strength training. If you’re affected by weak joints, you can incorporate HIIT into lower impact exercises, such as swimming or cycling. If you want to feel energized while doing the things you love, then HIIT just might be something you want to try. Just remember to keep a steady pace and don’t overdo it!

2 Surprising Ways Artificial Intelligence Protects Your Money and Future

Most people who hear about artificial intelligence (AI) conjure up an image of a robot acting and thinking on its own. However, it’s far more than that. AI systems are used by businesses to identify human behavior patterns and tailor marketing messages. They’re also used by health care professionals to provide diagnoses and monitor trends. And now, AI is being used for financial security.

its customers and verify its authenticity. For example, someone who makes a large withdrawal from their bank account might get an AI-generated call, text, or email seconds afterward to verify the transaction. Fraud Detection AI can also predict and flag unusual activity associated with fraud. By combining two of its processes — >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
