FROM THE GOLF SHOP

Safety Notes Our top priority continues to be keeping all members and staff safe at the club. Please keep in mind the following as you come to golf at the club: • Please do not arrive more than 15 minutes prior to your tee time to warm up. • If you need more than 15 minutes to warm up on the range, kindly walk to the back end if other players are waiting. • Please arrive to the first tee at your assigned tee time, and not before or after. • Please do not congregate in large groups. • Remember to always keep six feet apart from others. Practice Facility We are now taking Practice Facility reservations. This is for players coming just to hit range balls. There are four reserved spaces every 30 minutes for a spot to ‘practice only’ on the back of the range. Players with reservations have priority when the range is full. We ask that if you are coming to hit balls you make a reservation on the ‘Practice Facility’ course on the app. Reservations are not needed for warming up prior to your round, the Short Game Practice Area and Putting Green. Players should exercise caution walking to the back of the range. The Practice Range is open seven days a week starting 30 minutes prior to the first tee time until 6:30 p.m. Note that the range closes early every Sunday, at 5 p.m. Tee Time Etiquette During this time, we are encouraging members to pair up with other members they may not ordinarily play with. It is always a good idea to communicate with one another. If you are adding yourself to a tee time with another member, kindly send that member a note to let them know you have added to their time. If for any reason you have made a tee time and need to remove a member, of course send them a note before doing so. If you need help contacting another member, you can watch this short tutorial HERE Hours of Operation Beginning this Friday, May 8th, we will begin starting times 30 minutes earlier each day. Additionally, we are making the following modification to our golf course schedule: Monday - North Course Open / South Course opens at 2 p.m. Tuesday - South Course Open / North Course opens at 2 p.m. Wednesday - North Course Open / South Course opens at 2 p.m. Thursday - South Course Open / North Course opens at 2 p.m. Friday - North Course Open / South Course opens at 2 p.m.

GROUNDS MESSAGE With spring-like temps this past weekend, soil temps have reached a level that will push a significant amount of growth for our plants throughout the property. A tell-tale sign will be the golf course roughs. This week is off to a great start and we are expecting the rubber will meet the road. We continue to clean-up from last Thursday’s storm, but the priority for the beginning of the week is to get golf courses cut today and tomorrow, while preparing our fine turf surfaces. We are in “Maintenance Monday” mode as we had intentions of vert-cutting the South Course greens. A small part in the mower broke early in the process, and you will notice a difference between a few greens (9, 18 and main putting green) than the others. We pivoted to grooming the green tops. The difference between vert-cutting (below left) and grooming (below right) are the reels.

Verti-cutting is a bit more aggressive while grooming, under the right conditions, can be performed daily. Both processes help to eliminate long blades of grass that slow ball roll on greens and will stand the turf more upright on tees, approaches and fairways. Behind the grooming process, we are topdressing the greens and applying some soil amendments. We expect to perform similar tasks to the North greens tomorrow while the course is closed. We have installed a prism on a penalty stake in front of the pond on 3 South and 18 North. You can laser the distance to the pond’s edge to determine what type of shot you would like to play. We have also cut down the pool noodles to help distinguish a made versus missed putt.

Please remember to help out your fellow members by fixing one ball mark, plus one other, and to replace your divot. Have a great week! Jon Urbanski Director of Golf Courses & Grounds

Weekly Feature: 10 Ways to Improve Mental Toughness and Focus on the Tennis Court

– Ed McQuillin, Racquets Director

Our #2 method to improve your mental toughness and focus on the tennis court is establishing on-court tennis rituals. If you were to ask me what I do right before I serve or receive I could tell you the exact series of actions I have been doing the same way for the last 30 years. These on court tennis rituals allow you to relax and achieve a calm state of mind before you are ready to play a point. An example of a serve ritual would be to step up to the baseline, bounce the ball three times, think about your aim point for serving, visualize the path the ball needs to take to hit that spot and then take a deep breath before serving. An example of a serve return ritual is to visualize the direction you would like to hit the return, take a deep breath, move your feet side to side, split step when your opponent is starting their service motion and then step forward to hit the return. There are also rituals for net players with their serving or returning partner. These repetitive actions will help you to relax and get into a present state of mind. Allowing yourself to think about the score, opponent or something unrelated to tennis will make it more difficult to focus on the match and your performance. Racquet Shop Sale Last chance to buy a case of tennis balls for $50 versus the regular price of $84. This is like receiving 10 cans of balls free in the 24 can case.

FROM THE FITNESS CENTER

Quote of the Week “Come what May and Love it!”

Ready, Set, Go!! Freedom to move about the fitness center and enjoy your workout, personal training session, group exercise and /or yoga class, massage, or physical therapy treatment is what we all want and look forward to. Once we get the green light to reopen Fitness, we know that we must reintroduce services in phases. Through the Club Board and Leadership there is a plan for our members that addresses the phases of reopening the fitness center to include howmembers will be able to access equipment, cleaning and physical distancing strategies, and services and staffing. Once guidelines permit reopening, rest assured the fitness staff will be ready to go! We can’t wait to see you again! Lessons on Surviving the Pandemic Here are thoughts from Mary Green, Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor, that may help us all make a ‘New Normal’ seem normal. For me, I decided to stop saying ‘this is terrible’ or ‘why is this happening’ and remember the optimism and positivity I brought with me every day to WCC. Just because people aren’t here to see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t infectious. I noticed when I got out of my head with negative thoughts and opened up my mind to positive possibilities on what to do with all this free time- I was finding new + fun ways for everything! Whether it was a project around my apartment, trying a different type of workout that was out of comfort zone but challenged me, or learning a new recipe and having fun creating different dishes I’d never had the time to do before- I started seeing I was busier, eating better, and focused on making something out of each + every day. That was my mentality I’d had at the fitness center... and that was what was missing. My passion for life and for helping others didn’t need to stop because of all that was going on around me. I had to go back to feeling normal by being myself and making each day special in some way.

Two Major National Celebrations in May

1. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month! The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition is excited to encourage everyone to #MoveInMay , but remember to continue to practice social distancing while you’re being active. There are countless ways to get moving, and many of them can be done while you stay at home. This year, the President’s Council is teaming up with the Move Your Way campaign to help encourage all Americans to get active at home. Check out the National Physical Fitness & Sports Month blog for additional information, resources, and social media content to inspire people to get active by themselves or at home with their families. The Fitness Staff will continue to provide fitness tips and information in May (and beyond!). 2. May is National Mental Health Month! Since 1949, Mental Health America and their affiliates across the country have led the observance of May is Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events and screenings. Mental Health America welcomes other organizations to join them in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities. While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. In 2020, the theme of Tools 2 Thrive will provide practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency regardless of the situations they are dealing with. These tools – even those that may need to be adapted for the short term because of COVID-19 and social distancing – will be more useful than ever.

Fitness Fact Movement Melts Away Stress- As much as it may stress you out just to think about exercising, once you actually start working out, you’ll experience less stress in every part of your life. The key is to start off doing something. You’ll quickly lap everyone sitting on the couch!
