Overcoming Hip, Leg, & Knee Pain

In some cases, limited blood flow may cause bone tissue death, or necrosis. If you’re experiencing redness, inflammation and immobilized joints, the condition may be severe. What Are The Symptoms? While leg pain is noticeable by a slew of symptoms, several stick out. Aching or stiffness around the hip, groin, back or thigh may be a sign of deeper problems. A decreased range of motion can also be a sign of a bigger issue which may later result in hip, knee or leg pain. Sometimes, inactivity can contribute to immobility—and later, pain. If you’re limping, lurching or are experiencing bad balance, contact a physician. While some hip, knee and leg pains go away, those lasting longer than several months may be hinting at a deeper issue. Areyoulettinghip, leg, orkneepainholdyouback? Call 617.965.8070 (Newtonville) or 617.734.6135 (Brookline) to schedule your appointment today!

Your hips, knees, and lower legs are tough—but injuries happen. Your hips and knees are your largest joints, supporting your body’s weight. They work in close coordination, giving us the mobility we need. Between arthritis, injuries and age, however, pain can flare up. If you’re experiencing hip, knee or leg pain, call us to schedule a closer look. Before you do, however, let’s examine the pain itself. What Causes Hip, Leg, & Knee Pain? Hip, knee and leg pain are surprisingly common. Thus, their source can come from a variety of things. If you’re experiencing pain in any part of your leg, pinpointing the exact spot can help you determine the cause. Wellbridge Physical Therapy has pinpointed several leading causes of hip, knee and leg pain. While many causes exist, the most likely are:

• • • •

Arthritis

• • • •

Tendonitis

Dislocation Hip fracture

Pinched nerves Osteoporosis

Sprains and strains

Cancer

While some causes are more severe than others, a physician can identify each. As the body ages, joints become inflamed. Cartilage may wear down, reducing the “buffer” between bones.

HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP HIP, LEG, & KNEE PAIN

5 HEALTH TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR

1. Shop Well For Yourself. Have healthy snacks handy. Don’t waste energy worrying about what you can’t eat, and rather consume your 3 to 5 daily servings of vegetables. 2. Schedule Your Exercise. Schedule your workouts. It’s okay if you can’t make it to class, but make sure that you get some activity in at least three days per week. 3. Just Say No. You probably aren’t aware how much extra food you consume just from people offering it to you. Think before you take that food and decide if you really want it. 4. Skip the Baking. Instead of baking treats for friends, prepare ingredients for baked goods and put them in pretty jars and let your gift recipient bake 5. Hydrate. Keep a water bottle with you at all times. Drink at least eight, 8 oz. glasses of water each day. One handy trick is to buy a 64 ounce water jug. Fill it up in the morning and know that you need to finish it by the end of the day.

In many cases, physical therapy can help patients increase leg mobility. In doing so, they can stretch, flex and strengthen the muscles responsible for support. If a joint appears deformed, or if sudden swelling occurs, contact a physician immediately. A good physical therapy program can assist with post- operation treatment, too. If you’ve undergone treatment for osteoporosis, dislocation or a fracture, your therapist can help you reclaim full mobility—and a healthy lifestyle. From start to finish, we’re dedicated to your ongoing wellness. On every level, physical therapy serves to enhance the patient’s quality of life. We’re here to help, and we have years of experience backing every therapy option. Contact one of our providers today, and tell us about your symptoms.

• 2 cups chopped fresh spinach • 1/2 cup Plain Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt • Salt and pepper to taste

“If I could only give more Stars. My ankles have been a major issue for me. Jessica Shursky, the owner is my PT and wonderful to me. She takes the time to help and check on me every few minutes when I am on the stim. She is kind, caring, compassionate, and very knowledgeable. Her assistants are top notch and her other therapists seem extremely well versed. Everyone who I have come into contact with including the secretaries are warm and friendly.” - Dan W.

Wash the mushrooms and carefully remove the stems without breaking the caps. Finely chop the stems. Combine the shallots, garlic and vinegar in a small skillet or saucepan and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the chopped mushroom stems and soy sauce and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes, until the mushrooms soften and release their juices. Add the spinach and cook, continuing to stir, until it is wilted and the liquid in the pan is absorbed. Remove from the heat and let cool for a few minutes, then stir in the yogurt. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Stuff the spinach filling into the mushroom caps. Place the mushrooms in a baking pan and bake for 20 minutes, until tender. Remove from the oven and let sit for a few minutes for the filling to set before serving. Yields 20 mushrooms.

Even the most spectacularly well-trained human body has its limits. Those limitsareset, inpart,by thesoft tissues thatmobilizeyour joints and give you the strength to perform specific tasks. Your muscles are madeupofmanysmall, thin fibers thatcontractoncommand, working together to mobilize entire large muscle groups. These muscles are attached to your bones by connective tissues called tendons, enabling them to actually move your body parts. Our massage therapist might recommend different types of massage to accompany different forms (and intents) of your physical therapy program.
