OUR MOMS: A TRUE BLESSING

Attributes Passed Down From a Wonderful Teacher

It’s here! May, the month of my triathlon, has arrived. On the 15th, all of my training and hard work will be paying off. As I write this, I’m still in the midst of training, and I’m proud to say that I’m making great progress. As always, slow and steady wins the race. I’m enjoying the process; and thanks to my trainer preparing me every step of the way, I’m feeling confident and ready. I must trust the process — and this is something I am continually reminding my clients. We must always trust that if we follow the regimen, positive results will follow. And, so, I took my mentor and teacher “hat” off and became the student while training for the triathlon. As I did, I was reminded just how much my mother, who used to be a teacher, influenced me. I began to focus on three wonderful attributes she possesses which I admire and am grateful are instilled within me. As many of you know, I also love teaching. It’s in my blood, and I truly thrive on imparting retirement knowledge to people. I want each and every one of my clients to have a solid foundation and understanding of their retirement plans and portfolios. The first inspiring quality I learned from my mother was patience. In the classroom and at home with my sister and me, she was always so calm and patient. Just like training for a triathlon requires my trainer to be patient with me, teaching requires the patience to teach and explain things in such a way that others can understand the concepts. I have such appreciation for the way in which my mom shared knowledge — it’s a true gift. My mom was also the glue in our family. She held everyone together and made sure we always stayed connected. I aspire to be the glue in the families of my clients so they may enjoy retirement to the fullest. Their families become our families. Lastly, my mom was extremely social; and, as I grew up, I realized the importance of forming bonds and getting to know a multitude

of people in order to learn from them. At Wolf Retirement Navigation, it’s so important to show our appreciation for our clients. Thus, we host many client appreciation events in which we encourage everyone to come and mingle and to forge new and lasting friendships. This Mother’s Day, and every day, I thank my mom for exemplifying these attributes that I now find in myself that I’m sure will be passed down to my daughter. To all mother figures, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day. And remember to take time for yourself — you deserve it!

ENJOY THE LATER YEARS IN LIFE

3 Vitamins and Supplements for Healthy Aging

Growing old is an inevitable part of our lives. There isn’t a magic potion to drink or secret spell to cast that will turn back time, but we can do things to slow the effects of aging. Our life expectancy is longer than it used to be, so it makes sense that you would want to enjoy those extra years. While staying active and eating well play a huge role in healthy aging, there are also some anti-aging supplements and vitamins that will help your body stay strong.

As science has progressed, they’ve found that turmeric does contain compounds with medicinal properties with the most important being curcumin. Curcumin

has great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties but is also believed to improve memory issues and lower your risk for heart disease. Using more turmeric in your dishes will increase your intake of curcumin. Vitamin C Vitamin C is an incredibly beneficial vitamin for people of all ages but becomes even more useful for those over the age of 50. A study by Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that older adults with higher blood levels of vitamin C performed better on tasks involving focus, attention, recall, and recognition. Additionally, vitamin C can also help with skin health and can even improve immune function in older adults.

If you’re looking to try some anti-aging supplements but don’t know where to begin, give these a try.

Resveratrol Resveratrol is a class of micronutrients that plants make to survive drought or attacks from disease. It has fantastic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, so it’s great at protecting you from diseases like cancer, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s. Additionally, it can be used as a strong remedy for arthritis and skin inflammation. You can increase your intake of resveratrol by drinking red wine or by eating more peanuts, berries, and grapes. Curcumin For years, the spice known as turmeric has been used as a nutritional supplement with great benefits for your mind and body.

There are various things you can try to slow down the aging process, but if you’re unsure where to turn, give these vitamins and supplements a shot. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: PATTI POWNALL

Growing Through Grief Share

Patti and her husband were married for 36 wonderful years. They made plans to travel and navigate their golden years together. In 2017, Patti retired after 44 years as an emergency room night shift registered nurse. Then, Patti very tragically and suddenly lost her husband. For quite some time after his death, Patti felt lost. “I was no longer a wife, no longer a nurse; and with my two sons fully grown, I no longer had any pressing ‘mom duties,’” Patti said. “I needed to get my act together and find another focus.” That’s when Patti found a Grief Share program through her church, Hibernia Baptist Church. “It is a 13-week Christian- based grief support group that focuses on sharing losses and working through loss. I went through the program three times; and through that, the support of the former

Grief Share facilitators (Jim and Sharon), and a lot of praying, I am now able to move forward,” Patti said. Patti is now the new Grief Share facilitator and feels like she’s found herself again. “The Lord has prepared me for this position,” Patti said. “I’m very excited and ready to give back.” If you or anyone you know is struggling with a loss and may benefit from Grief Share, you can contact Patti at 904-434-4640 or visit Grief Share online at www.GriefShare.org. We are thrilled for Patti, one of our clients here at Wolf Retirement Navigation, and thank her for sharing her story, passion, and purpose. NATIONAL LIFE INSURANCE DAY Understanding the Importance of Life Insurance

This year, National Life Insurance Day falls on May 2, which commemorates the time in the late 1760s when life insurance first became available in the United States and echoes the importance of carrying a life insurance policy. Some may ask why carrying a life insurance policy is a good idea, especially in retirement, and the answer lies in understanding how it can help you prepare for the long-term financial needs of yourself and your family. Life insurance is important if you are married with children, or have relatives, friends, or a partner who depend on you, because it provides a tax-free “death benefit” to the person whom you choose as your beneficiary. When you retire, many times you do not need life insurance to cover lost income because you now are relying on your retirement assets and other income sources to meet your goals. You are saving premiums this way; however, you may need to plan for a death benefit to replace a lost pension when a spouse passes away or to leave a tax-free legacy to your family. Life insurance can be essentially financial protection for your family when you pass away, but there are also some little-known benefits that are available to you while you are alive through living benefits such as those that pay for long-term care “LTC” or chronic illness expenses. Many policies now offer these “LTC” benefits that allow

you to use your death benefit tax free to pay for LTC expenses. Unlike traditional LTC insurance, this is not a “use it or lose it” policy. If you don’t use it for LTC, then your family would inherit the tax-free death benefit upon your passing. Another potentially great consideration is tax-free income via loans from your policy. This can be very beneficial to you for supplementing your lifestyle with tax-free income, especially in a rising tax environment. Of course, the “devil is in the details” of the policies and their wording, so give us a call to schedule your life insurance review for LTC and tax-free income options today.

PICKING THE PERFECT SOUVENIR

A way to preserve or share a piece of your trip is to bring home a souvenir, but choosing a souvenir isn’t always a stress-free experience. How do you pick the perfect souvenir and not just the first thing you see in a tourist shop? Here are some tips for picking a truly meaningful gift for yourself or your loved ones. Who are you buying for? What are your recipient’s interests, or what do they spend the most time doing? If you’re buying for yourself and enjoy coffee, you might buy a local coffee blend to enjoy from home. However, if your recipient doesn’t enjoy coffee or rarely drinks it, that type of gift might not mean much to them. Is it legal to bring home? Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, there are many regulations that affect which souvenirs you can bring home. Even if you find the item in a tourist shop, that doesn’t mean it’ll be allowed into the country or even onto the plane. And the TSA does take this seriously. In 2012, two tourists were detained at the U.S. border for trying to bring

home chocolate Kinder eggs — a specific kind that are illegal in the U.S. due to the potentially hazardous small toys inside.

Purchase a handicraft. Handicrafts — items created by local artisans — are awesome souvenirs! But make sure you buy where artisans actually sell their own goods, such as an open-air market. Unfortunately, while some popular tourist shops may sell “locally made goods,” many souvenirs intended for tourists are actually made by cheap manufacturers in other countries. Keep something from the adventure. Bringing a glass bottle to take home some sand is a popular way of creating your own souvenir from a beach vacation. But you can do this with almost any item! Whether it’s stones, ticket stubs from favorite shows and activities, or a handmade item from a class, make sure to look out for souvenirs that’ll remind you of great memories and experiences.

We hope these tips will help you make the best choice. Bon voyage!
