SummerMemories in theMaking
The Importance of the Summer Vacation
of the Baltic Sea. Plus, 24-hour room service didn’t hurt either — and there were many cuisines from around the region to sample. If you have considered a cruise like this, we recommended it for any family. It’s an unforgettable experience. Of course, when it comes to making memories with your family, the family vacation cannot be beat. It’s a time that allows you to be present with everyone in your family and to “plug in” and really get to know one another outside of the context of work and school. We use our family vacations not only to get out and enjoy time together, but to talk about goals for the year to come. When it comes to our daughter, we discuss goals for the next school year. We make a mini-plan to hold her accountable and help her reach her goals, and then, finally, we begin planning the next year’s adventure. Vacation makes a great incentive for hitting those goals, which is why we’re going to Puerto Rico this year! Who knows what goals we’ll set for next year, but I know we’ll have fun and learn something new along the way. Sahira Lopez
For many families, summer is a time for vacations and a chance to get away from the ordinary. Whether you take a few days, a week, or longer, family vacations let you unwind and spend quality time with the people you love. This year, our family will be doing something a little out of the ordinary. My daughter and I will be spending a month in Puerto Rico, with Dr. Lopez visiting when he can (he will be balancing time off with a few other obligations). This monthlong trip to Puerto Rico is about a year in the making, and it came from a discussion we had as a family on our last vacation. Last summer, our family took a weeklong Disney Cruise through Northern Europe. It was an amazing, educational week that gave us an opportunity to see five countries along the Baltic Sea: Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Estonia. In Finland, we spent a day on a farm with a family who lived and worked there. We got to see how they lived and learned all about their local traditions. In Sweden, our daughter was thrilled to visit a museum dedicated to Pippi Longstocking, one of her favorite fictional characters. The author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren, is from Sweden, and the character is highly revered, even to this day. When we arrived in Russia, we visited my favorite destination, the State Hermitage Museum. The museum is located in Saint Petersburg and is one of the oldest museums in the world. It’s also the site of many amazing works of art, including pieces by Leonardo Da Vinci and Rembrandt. The artwork by these legends is incredible to see up close and in person, especially Da Vinci’s masterpieces. His vision was so ahead of his time, and it shows! Throughout the cruise, Dr. Lopez loved to spend time relaxing on the balcony of our room on the ship. From there, he could admire the architecture of the many destinations while enjoying the calm

Libraries are also great places to get suggestions for kids, and they offer fun activities during the day and night that will foster a love of learning and reading! But libraries aren’t the only places that reward summer reading. National businesses also get in on the fun. Barnes & Noble will give a free book to any child who completes their summer reading triathlon journal ( barnesandnoble.com/ summerreading ). Chuck E. Cheese will give any child 10 free tokens if they read every day and record their progress on their reading calendar ( chuckecheese.com ). Pizza Hut will also reward young readers for filling out a passport ( bookitprogram.com ), and there are other companies that offer incentives. Remember, reading is about more than just learning. It’s also about keeping minds active to fight the “summer slide” that educators dread every new school year. Prevention Is the Best Medicine The Astounding Benefits of Dental Sealants for Kids
How does it work? Dental sealants use a tooth-colored acrylic coating which is painted onto the surface of the tooth. This treatment seals the
Kids can be hard on their teeth. Between their love of sugary foods and drinks and inconsistent dental hygiene, a trip to the dentist doesn’t always bring good news. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports that 42 percent of kids, ages 2–11, have developed cavities. And as kids age, the prevalence of cavities goes up. Nearly 60 percent of teens have at least one cavity. What can parents, kids, and dentists do to get these numbers down? First and foremost, prevention is the best way to combat the development of cavities and tooth decay. Practicing good dental hygiene at home, like brushing and flossing at least twice a day, will do wonders. But we can take prevention a step further with dental sealants. Because kids and teens are at the greatest risk for developing cavities and tooth decay as they get older, sealants during their formative years will help lower their risk. Sealants are highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth. They stop harsh bacteria from invading the grooves and valleys of the premolars and molars.
deep grooves and acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. It’s easy to apply and only takes a
few minutes for each tooth. Plus, sealants hold up against the force of normal chewing and can last several years before reapplication is needed.
Sealants, combined with everyday dental hygiene, are the perfect way to save yourself and your kids from a lot of aggravation later in life. The results are a healthier smile and fewer appointments to correct issues related to tooth decay, making it a worthy investment.

Dental Bits
Even if you’ve been brushing and flossing every day of your life, you may find that your teeth lack the luster or bright white hue they used to have. Lucky for you, there are numerous treatments that can bring the shine back to your smile. How ItWorks Teeth whitening is a simple process. Either you or your dentist will apply products that contain one of two tooth bleaches, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals break tooth stains into smaller pieces, dispersing the discoloration and brightening the teeth. Whitening Options There are three ways to get your teeth glistening again. Whitening toothpastes that have special chemical or polishing agents can aid in stain removal. But unlike bleaches, these products are only able to remove stains on the surface of your teeth. Not-So-PearlyWhites? The Facts About Teeth Whitening
In-office bleaching is often your best option, and this option usually only requires a single office visit. During the process, dentists place either a gel or rubber shield to protect your gums, then apply bleach to the teeth. Often, this is accompanied by a special light or laser to enhance the effectiveness of the whitening agent. If you want to bleach at home, you can get peroxide-containing whiteners from your dentist. Usually, these come in the form of a gel that is placed into a tray that then fits over your teeth. Whitening strips may also be used. It’s important to note that the bleaching agents used in at-home bleaching are less concentrated than the ones your dentist uses in the office.
Ask your dentist today if teeth whitening is an option for your smile — and start restoring your teeth to their former beauty!

Where the Wild Things Are The Unspoiled Natural Majesty of Yellowstone National Park

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another. As far as getaway destinations go, Yellowstone National Park, sprawling across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, is a little more expansive. More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family.
Prismatic Spring, which, besides its otherworldly rainbowwaters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S.
For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, Yellowstone is a no-brainer.
Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions
averaging a whopping 130 vertical feet. Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, hike one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The views,
