Walk Again Without Pain! ZPT The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body July 2018

Your ability to walk is an amazingly complex system of muscles, nerves, and joints working in harmony. If you suffer from hip, knee, or leg pain, the normal movement of this complicated system has been affected in one way or another. Knee and Hip Pain Knee or hip pain can occur for many reasons, but is a mechanical problem, meaning that the joint and muscles supporting it are not functioning properly. Even though a person has arthritis in their joint, it doesn’t mean that they will have pain from it. Pain and inflammation only begin when the joint doesn’t move properly and pressures increase. Many knee problems come from poor tracking of the kneecap or patella. The kneecap has to move up and down in the groove on the femur bone when you bend your knee. It is also where your strong thigh muscles attach. The kneecap sits on fat pads that provide cushioning. However, when the tissue around the kneecap becomes tighter, the kneecap presses further into the fat pads, making them irritated and thicker over time. This affects the normal flow of joint fluid around the inside of the knee and actually dries out the knee over time causing more friction and pain.

July 2018

Dear ZPT family and friends, We procrastinate for various reasons: to avoid facing the consequences of a decision or action, to avoid judgementof others, to postpone the activity until it is planned perfectly,

Yet another team member is getting married at the end of July, Marissa Wilding. She and her fiance’, Jeff have a home in nearby Anson, and we are thrilled that she will be staying with us to help build the practice and care for our patients with her knowledge and cheerfulness.

or perhaps just to avoid an unpleasant emotion. That last one would be most pertinent to me as I write this letter. This month, we must say farewell tooneofourstellar teammembers,KatiePoisel,as

shemarriesandmoves to southern Indiana to begin her new family with Seth. Although I am really, deep-down happy for Katie, it is a bitter sweet pill to take, to know that we won’t be working side by side like we have since October of 2015. And As we bid Katie farewell, we also welcome her student, Emina Alicusic-Karic, back as a licensed (soon!) physical therapist, with her DPT, our newest team member at ZPT. After finishing her internship with us in March,

This month’s emphasis is WALKING, since summer is the time to WALK and hike around Indiana, the time to travel and see other places, and apparently the month to WALK down the aisle to be married! ZPThas been a source of WALKING RESTORATION over the years, with strengthening, balance work, pain relief and post-surgical rehabilitation. Although I have procrastinated saying goodbye to Katie, please don’t be like me… come in and say farewell and offer some great marriage advice. We will have a box for wedding cards and advice for each of the gals getting hitched later this month. Furthermore, don’t procrastinate your need for help, if you are hurting or LIMPING. Get in here to ZPT so we can help address the cause of your WALKING problems and get you back to “LEAP OUT” and do the things you love.

more… I’ve known Katie since she was an infant, and I know what a wonderful young lady she has become, both professionally and personally. Best wishes, hugs…(sniff!)

Patient Success SPOTLIGHT

I Can Walk to See the Sights! “Physical therapy helped my balance greatly. The biggest reason I came to ZPT was so I could walk to see the sights on my trip to England and Italy. I could barely walk on my left foot when I came in. Now, I expect to be able to walk all over Europe!” - Linda G.

Gratefully, Elaine

P.S. “What does the Lord require? To do justice, love kindness, and WALK humbly with your God.” - Micah 6: 6-8

Emina graduated from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. Emina’s intelligence, sparkling personality and positive energy will be a great addition to our team.

More Patient Success "I returned to work one month early!" "When I first arrived after my knee replacement surgery; I was on a walker, unable to tolerate a small amount of walking without needing regular doses of pain medication, and feeling as though I would never be “normal” again. With help from Katie,Taylor, Marissa, and Katia, I have regained my freedom to enjoy life – I can now walk for exercise, not just to get through life. I can get up and down from chairs with ease, without locking my knee. I can enjoy time with my young nieces DOING things, not just watching things being done, and I returned to work one month early because of the care received from everyone here at ZPT. My appreciation for the excellent staff knows no bounds.” - Jeannine R. "ZPT helped me heal to return to the dog sport I love!" "I came in wearing a brace on my right hand with great pain and am leaving with no brace and almost pain free. My range of motion in my wrist is almost normal. I started with therapy on my right leg due to sciatica pain – now I have very little pain and can walk without a noticeable limp. The right leg has not felt this good for the last ten years – wished I had done this sooner. Everyone at Zionsville Physical Therapy has been a joy to work with. They are very knowledgeable about their craft. I feel better than I have felt for several years. Thank you so much!” - Jan K. "I tore my left calf muscle. I could not run a course anymore. This was incredibly disappointing, as this is my prenominal hobby. Not only did Zionsville Physical Therapy help me heal to return to the dog sport I love, but you helped me figure out what we could do while I healed so that we didn’t waste training time on the bench. Thank you for the outstanding expertise, the patience and help as I healed, the advice on how to not hurt myself again, and the kindness through this process. More than just outstanding excellence in physical therapy, you guys made a traumatic event not so bad at all. I dare say, I’ll miss you guys!” - Michelle B. "Wished I had done this sooner!"

ZIONSVILLE PHYSICAL THERAPY PRESENTS: NUSTEP

NuStep

Introducing our newest piece of equipment, a favorite among the “users” here at ZPT: the NuStep, total body recumbent stepper. It is a comfortable cross between recumbent bike and upright stair stepper, which offers a great work out or warm up in addition to being comfortable and adjustable. According to Katie Poisel, DPT, the NuStep is a “great tool for getting patients moving again.” She further explains that “especially after surgery or if range of motion, or ROM (flexibility) is limited, patients can still work through a partial ROM with resistance to begin building aerobic capacity. With upper and lower extremity components, it can be easily tailored to almost any diagnosis.” Research shows that the NuStep training offers significant increases in aerobic capacity and endurance, as well as muscle strength and endurance. Furthermore, NuStep use resulted in significant increase in lean body mass and significant reduction in fat mass and percent body fat. See what our patients have to say: Helped me gain flexibility! “TheNuStephashelpedmegainflexibilityandstrengthafterhaving totalknee replacement surgery. It is a great warm-up exercise prior to all other physical therapy tasks.” - Sherry H.
