Taking to the local waters soon? Whether you’re captaining an ever-reliable Boston Whaler or at the helm of a Riva 63 Virtus, there’s nothing quite like pulling into a marina, tying up, and disembarking for the catch of the day or a lobster dinner.

Frisky Oyster (uh, try the oysters), and First and South . Also in Greenport, check out Porto Bello (1410 Manhanset Ave) located in Safe Harbor Stirling Marina, which can handle boats from 20’ to 80’. In Orient, right before the Cross Sound Ferry, you’ll find Duryea’s Orient Point (40200 Main Road), a striking restaurant with transient slips available on a first come, first served basis. Farther west toward Riverhead, cruise in to On the Docks Grill (177 Meeting House Creek Road, Aquebogue) for American fare such as burgers, sandwiches, seafood, and pasta. There’s plenty of dock-and-dine opportunities in Hampton Bays too. Check out the clam fritters at Canal Café (44 Newtown Road), the jumbo diver scallops at Cowfish (258 E. Montauk Highway), and local clams on the half shell at Oakland’s Restaurant & Marina (373 Dune Road). Nearby, Sunday’s on the Bay (369 Dune Road), is also an option. Note that all of the aforementioned have transient slips. As always, you may want to call ahead to make a reservation. Above all, stay safe and chow down!

PULL INTO A RESTAURANT NEAR YOU

Starting in Montauk, there are two excellent options: Duryea’s Lobster Deck (65 Tuthill Road) and Navy Beach (16 Navy Road), close to each other on Fort Pond Bay. Boaters can order food from Duryea’s app and have it brought direct to their boat. Try the lobster roll (of course) at Duryea’s and the buttermilk fried chicken at Navy Beach. At Navy Beach, look for the tender boat to bring you into its on-the-beach location, but be sure to call ahead to reserve. Farther west, one can gas up at Harbor Marina in Springs and grab a bite at the ever-popular Bostwick’s on the Harbor (39 Gann Road), which features an elevated view and plenty of seafood dishes. Pro tip: boaters can also pull up to East Hampton Town Dock, a mere 50 yards from the restaurant. Cruising down Three Mile Harbor, you’ll find Harbor Bistro (313 Three Mile Harbor–Hog Creek Road), which has limited transient slips and accommodates vessels from 18’ to 75’ with drafts of up to eight feet. Chef/owner Damien O’Donnell serves up an eclectic Asian-inspired menu. Try the tuna poke. Sag Harbor has no shortage of restaurants

close to the water: Village Marina offers transient dockage with close access to the reliable Dockside Bar & Grill at 26 Bay Street. The upscale Le Bilboquet and laid-back The Dock House are right on Long Wharf. For information on transient slip reservations, contact the Harbormaster’s Office at (631) 725-2368. Over in Noyac, The Bell & Anchor is located in the Mill Creek Marina. If you find yourself there, order the “Old School” garganelli, which features lobster, corn, basil and saffron courtesy of chef and co-owner, Sam McCleland. Nestled in a sleepy cove in equally sleepy Shelter Island, you’ll find Salt Waterfront Bar & Grill located in the Island Boatyard and Marina, one of Shelter Island’s mainstays. Try the chef’s special New England clam chowder. Many of the North Fork’s quaint villages abut water. In Southold, A Lure Chowder House & Oysteria (62300 Main Road) has slips, and farther east in Greenport, one can pull up to Claudio’s (111 Main Street)—get the local fried flounder—and access the rest of Front Street’s eateries like Noah’s (the local bouillabaisse is famous),

A TOAST TO SUMMER

Instructions To infuse the rum, peel and dice two cucumbers. Mix with one bottle of rum in a sealable glass container, close, and allow to infuse for a minimum of 24 hours. Filter twice, first through a mesh strainer, and secondly through a fine filter, such as a coffee filter. Store in the refrigerator indefinitely. For the lime oleo saccharum, grate the zest from three limes. Mix well with one cup of sugar, and allow to rest for a minimum of one hour. Combine the mixture in a saucepan with one cup fresh lime juice, and heat just to melting. Allow to cool, then strain. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. For the tea, brew equal parts green tea with fresh mint for three minutes, then strain. For the cocktail, combine all of the elements together and serve in a chilled tumbler, with a ribbon of cucumber, lime wheel, and freshly grated nutmeg, on ice. The recipe can be multiplied and batched up to 24 hours in advance. For more drinking and fine dining options, as well as lodging, visit www.bridgehamptoninn.com.

Not with his wonderful wife, Aynsley Kate, who owns the Stick + Stone store that shares a space with the Grain Surfboards NY shop nestled behind a square of green on Main Street in Amagansett. That had happened years ago. No, he fell in love with the back-to- basics simplicity of crafting a surfboard (and skateboards, for the landlubbers) with his own two hands. “The use of hand tools—a spoke shave and a hand plane, and chisels” got Brian interested enough that he switched gears and moved to Amagansett with Aynsley and their two children after a lengthy training program to be part of the team to launch Grain on the East End. “You do use some of that with furniture, but it’s just a much more enjoyable experience, because you can work with your friends and you don’t need headphones and eye protection.” It felt almost like a tribal activity, he said. No stranger to the sea, Brian had previously worked as a sailor and sailing teacher out of Newport, and did boat deliveries to and from the Caribbean. He even crewed in a transatlantic race through the heart of Hurricane Gustav in 2002. According to his bio on the Grain Surfboards website, he caught his first wave at Waikiki on his honeymoon. With Theo Papademetriou as store manager, the two now run the woodshop where they custom craft boards, and teach others to do the same. There are five-day surf and skate workshops for kids throughout the summer, and there are also three- and four-day workshops for adults, where you can learn to craft a beautiful, sustainably-harvested board with Brian and Theo. Current safety protocols are followed, and the class sizes are limited. “We decided that the experience was just so awesome that we wanted to share it with people,” he said. “There’s a great surf community here, and it’s a unique product, but it’s really about the experience of making it yourself. I could make you a board, and you would love your board, but if you built it yourself, you would love it so much more, it would mean so much more.”

Brian Schöpfer was not expecting to fall in love when he attended a Grain Surfboards workshop with his brother-in- law, Patrick Fleury, in Maine about five or six years back. Up until then, he had been a property manager on a farm in Rhode Island. “Whenever a tree would come down, I would source the wood from that to make custom furniture. So, I approached my experience at

SWIM SAFELY THIS SUMMER

Ah, summer—pool covers are off, bathing suits and sunscreen are on, beaches are open, and the hottest pool toys litter the lawn. We are all anxious to jump in. But before everyone lets loose, the highest priority is water safety. Swim lessons for children are strongly suggested. Look for an instructor who is experienced and qualified with certifications in first aid, CPR, and lifeguarding. While you may be tempted to teach your child yourself, an instructor may have a fresh approach and an ability to teach while making it fun. Children should also never be left unattended in or near the pool area or beach, whether they can swim or not. Sun protection is also necessary, so limit your hours in the sun and sit in the shade during peak hours. Armed with this crash course in water safety you are set to enjoy the summer, so go jump on that giant swan floating in the pool or grab a boogie board and hit the beach—enjoy summer 2021! option to customize the experience. Trip durations can range from a 2-hour private sunset cruise to a week-long voyage to Nantucket or New England. From a 22’ water-ski boat to a 62’ yacht, a range of price points and discounted packages are available. “I am excited to introduce Yacht Hampton and its new fleet to the Hamptons boating community,” said Ialacci. “Being out on the water is one of the safest and COVID- friendly ways to enjoy the summer.” The season runs through October 15 and caters to all occasions—sunset cruises, graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and corporate events. Boat ownership

His company, Yacht Hampton, allows Hamptonites and boating enthusiasts to experience a collection of multimillion-dollar boats and yachts for fun-filled, memorable days on the Hamptons’ surrounding waters. Joe began his career as an entrepreneur, starting his first business—an optical supply company named Optisource—out of his basement in his early 20’s. Eventually, he sold the company to Essilor, the world’s largest manufacturer of eyeglass lenses, and went on to continue a career in finance. In 2017, Joe left the finance world to focus exclusively on his passion, boating. He formed Hamptons Boat Rental, providing clients with easy access to boating and yachting, building his fleet around “classy, new, chic, and reliable vessels.” In 2020, the company was rebranded as Yacht Hampton. Today, his fleet is equipped with 30+ boats to meet the most discerning of tastes—powerboats, sailboats, catamarans, fishing boats, and yachts—including a 62’ silver Italian Pershing yacht reminiscent of James Bond, and loaded with more water toys

than the mega-yachts featured on Bravo’s “Below Deck.” In addition to its wide selection of vessels, Yacht Hampton’s collection features some of the industry’s newest models. With 95 percent of the local boat rental and charter market using vessels 10 to 30 years old, this is a valuable differentiator—one Ialacci aims to use to change the way East-Enders enjoy the local waters. This summer,

a few lucky boaters will become the first to board five 2021 models making their maiden voyages. Ialacci is particularly excited to introduce the 62’ Pershing and the 43’ Pardo, “They’re different, and both have that chic Italian style,” he said. Beyond boats, the company offers an extensive inventory of water toys—jet skis, tenders, sea scooters, SEABOBS, hydrofoil boards, electric surfboards, and floating party islands—in addition to an assortment of tubes,

may be too time consuming or out of budget for some, but according to Ialacci, the yacht experience is now within reach for everyone—all it takes is the click of a mouse. To find your special vessel, visit www.yachthampton.com

MATT RAYNOR’S BIRD’S EYE VIEW LIFE REPURPOSED THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE TEITLER

than I would like to admit,” he said of being chair- bound, unable to even feed himself. “Spinal cord injury, especially at the cervical level, comes with a painful adjustment period. It’s like being born twice. It doesn’t come with a manual. Most of the things you either have to figure out on your own or find out from another paralyzed person,” he said. Matt noted that he can eat on his own now. A spinal cord injury is about “acceptance and persistence,” as those who suffer need to re- engineer the muscles to move in a new way, he said. Thanks to his ingenuity and help from friends, he learned how to operate drones and computers. “For once, I’m actually sitting and learning instead of pursuing an endless adventure.” Photography allows him to experience life while within the confines of his wheelchair. “I had to accept the hard facts. Focus on what you can do and not what you can’t do. We are all here for a limited time only, best try to get a few beautiful moments in while we can.” The drone’s aerial mobility enables images he would be otherwise unable to capture. “It’s hard doing things when your hands don’t work.” To prepare his shoot, he chooses a place from memory or searches on Google maps. Then, he finds a driver, as he cannot drive himself, and begins the process. Through it, he’s been able to create a revenue stream. His pre-paralysis images of nautical splendor remain ever-popular, but his newer pho- to- graphs like “Boardwalk” and “Tiana” were turning point images after the injury, serving as moments in which he realized he could turn the hobby into a job. “Everyone needs purpose. Drone photography has lent its hand to me as that purpose,” Raynor said.

While the rest of the world learned to navigate a pandemic, Matthew Raynor was still learning how to adjust to life in a wheelchair. In 2019, the Hampton Bays native suffered a severe spinal injury, the result of a dive gone wrong, that left him paralyzed below his collarbone. For some, this would signify the end of all hope, but for Matt it was the chance to start over. Prior to his accident, Raynor was a fisherman with a photography hobby that captured powerful moments at sea—buoys, tempest-tossed boats, brewing weather and big waves—images both bold

and beautiful. Since, it has transformed into art therapy, and a means to pay for his recovery. “At the time I thought that would be my niche,” Matt said of life aboard commercial fishing vessels in the northeast. Growing up, he suffered from chronic anxiety and panic attacks that made sitting and learning in, say, a college classroom all but impossible. But aquatic activities proved to be calming influences—surfing, spearfishing, swimming, and eventually working the relentless hours, weeks, and even months at a time as a commercial fisherman.

After the accident, they became the reverse, a reminder of the person he could no longer be, and left him feeling despondent. But, as they say, time heals all wounds. Raynor’s photographic approach has adapted with the changes in his life. Before his accident he’d put his camera on autopilot amid perilous storms but now he explores new techniques and subject matter. “When I was newly injured, I was pretty much rudderless: disabled, at home, bored and depressed, probably suffering from more PTSD

Say the name “Ryan” in East Hampton, and most locals will immediately throw out words like “lifeguard,” “ocean rescue,” or simply “hero.” For nearly 30 years, John Ryan Jr., and his father, John Ryan Sr. (known to most simply as Big John) have championed the cause of water safety in East Hampton. Over several decades, the father and son duo have set out to “drown-proof the community,” doing everything they can to ensure adults and children don’t drown simply because no one

taught them how to swim and conduct themselves in the ocean. Both Ryans are educators by trade and training and put that expertise to work on the sand and in the water. Big John, now 85 years old, had his first lifeguarding job when he was just 16, working at Long Beach in Nassau County, and said that passing the ocean lifeguarding test gave him confidence. After going to college and raising nine children with his wife, Pat, he became certified as an ocean lifeguard again at the age of 45. The Ryan children followed in their father’s footsteps, earning lifeguard certification and spending time working the beach. John Jr. has been the chief lifeguard for the Town of East Hampton since 1991, and John Sr.

and beyond, said John Jr. Graduates routinely come back to help run the program, which has served as an employee pipeline for the many town and village ocean beaches in the area. The Ryans were also instrumental in creating the East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Squad in 2004, certified ocean lifeguards who are on call as first-responders to ocean-related emergencies at beaches without lifeguards or during hours when lifeguards are not on duty. The program has become so legendary, it was the subject of a documentary premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2019—“Waterproof,” produced by Mae Mougin and directed by Ross Kauffman. Be on the lookout for a showing this summer. “Without the support of the town and the village, these programs wouldn’t exist,” said John Jr. The coordination and involvement of those entities allows the programs to run for what amounts to less than $4 an hour, a cost of just $90 per child for the entirety of the six-week program. “It isn’t about the money, it’s about what we’re giving to the community,” he said. Heroes, indeed.

has been the manager of the Amagansett Beach Association—adjacent to Indian Wells Beach, where his son works—for 35 years. Big John also serves as coordinator of lifeguard training and the junior lifeguard program for the town. Starting the junior lifeguarding program in 1996 has perhaps been the biggest legacy of the Ryans. The low-cost program runs for several weeks in the summer and teaches children ages 9 to 14 ocean safety and awareness—how to safely enter and exit the shore break, how to break the grip of a rip current—as well as the fundamentals of lifeguard drills and rescues. While the program was limited last summer due to COVID-19, it had well over 300 children participating in 2019, with weekend clinics at Indian Wells, Ditch Plains in Montauk, and Main Beach in East Hampton. The Nipper Guards program was added six years ago, for children ages 6 to 8, conducted by John Jr.’s daughter, Haley Ryan, at the bay beach, functioning as an introduction to the junior program. The junior program has had positive ripple effects throughout the East Hampton community
