TH1 - BRAIN INJURY 101 Presented by: Lynn Brouwers, MS, CBIST, CRC

The consequences of a brain injury are often misunderstood, since the impact can be different for each person affected. This presentation is intended as an introduction to brain injury and it's far ranging consequences. The presentation will cover, epidemiology, definitions, common measurement tools, and a review of brain injury's impact on cognitive, psychosocial, functional, and medical functioning. Rehab systems and tools for successful living will be reviewed. TH2 - MEMORY ISSUES AFTER TBI Presented by: Andrew Hale, PhD, Clinical Psychology and Robert Spencer, PhD, Clinical Psychology In this session, we will provide an overview of memory focusing on three areas. First, types of memory and the experience of remembering will be discussed. Second, we will provide a basic overview of the neuroanatomy of memory including key structures and circuits. These first points will be the foundation on which we discuss the ways that memory can be impacted following TBI.

SESSION 3 BREAKOUTS

11:15 a.m.

LUNCH/EXHIBITOR TIME Executive functions are those skills and abilities that allow people to plan, prioritize, organize, execute, and reflect on a task or set of related tasks. Sometimes called the CEO of the brain or the conductor of the cognitive orchestra, executive functions let us "get things done." After pediatric brain injury, these skills are adversely impacted, resulting in disruption or difficulties that can make school very difficult. In this session, you will gain rudimentary knowledge about extant models of executive functioning, what skills are involved, strategies for improvement, and some technology tools for supporting school-aged children. TH5 - ADMINISTERING A SPECIAL NEEDS TRUST Presented by: Michele Fuller, JD Overview of settlement planning tools: structured settlements, conservatorship, settlement preservation trust, ABLE accounts, and special needs trusts. TH6 - EXECUTIVE FUNCTION AFTER PEDIATRIC BRAIN INJURY Presented by: Eric Bourque, MA, CBIS, API

TH7 - GUARDIANSHIP VS. SUPPORTED DECISION-MAKING Presented by: Michele Fuller, JD

Often people with TBIs need support in decision-making. This course will highlight the pros and cons and the appropriateness of guardianship and how supported decision can also play a part in the guardianship process or used in partnership with power of attorney. TH8 - SUICIDE IN TBI SURVIVORS Presented by: Martin Waalkes, PhD, ABPP, CBIST, Licensed Psychologist Suicide rates have been increasing nationally and worldwide over the last 60 years. Persons with brain injury demonstrate suicide behavior at higher rates than the general population. Relationships of the nature and severity of distressing symptoms, and impairments of cognitive and psychiatric functioning specific to brain injury, increase suicide risk. Screening and individualized assessment identifying risk and several evidenced-based treatments are easily adapted for persons with TBI. Systematic organizational initiatives further enhance response to suicide prevention as a community need.

TH9 - CBD AND CANNABIS USE Presented by: Rob Leffler, BS in Pharmacy

EXHIBITOR TIME Surviving a brain injury presents many different challenges. Brain injury survivors are often left with paralysis, vision impairment, fatigue, anxiety, depression and trying to figure out who they are while living in a new and different body. While the rehabilitation process for a brain injury survivor typically focuses on physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, this session will address the value of including mental health therapy as part of the process. CBD and marijuana use is growing exponentially in the US right now. Patients and providers struggle to navigate the legal and health risks of recreational and medical use of these products. There is a great deal of confusion about the use of CBD and other marijuana-based products. This session will explore the history and science of CBD and marijuana related products and their applications. TH10 - THE MENTAL HEALTH BATTLE OF SURVIVING A BRAIN INJURY Presented by: Trevor Turner, BS

TH11 - POST TRAUMATIC HEADACHES Presented by: Caroline Zubieta, MD-MBA Candidate, and Percival Pangilinan, MD Headaches are common in the TBI population, and they can be debilitating. This session will provide an overview of the prevalence of posttraumatic headaches, different presentations of headaches, proposed causes, risk factors that lead to chronic headaches, and management approaches.

TH12 - BECOMING AN ADVOCACY SUPERHERO Presented by: Michael Lang, BS, and Kelly Lang, BA

Quality of Life

Michael and Kelly Lang deliver unique perspectives advocating for their daughter since her traumatic brain injury 20 years ago. Their advocacy began upon arrival in the emergency room with their 3-year-old daughter. Over the years, they have identified, developed, and implemented advocacy strategies for medical, educational, therapeutic, and job support needs. Although each parent sometimes employed different techniques in their advocacy, they worked as a team to acquire the services their daughter was entitled to in order to maximize her potential.

FR1 - WHEN BRAIN INJURY, MENTAL ILLNESS & CANNABIS COLLIDE Presented by: Stephanie Huhn MA, LLP, CBIS, CAADC, CCM, ACCTS, and Dr. Colin King, PHD, Clinical Psychology When acquired brain Injury diagnoses, mental illness and cannabis abuse are present, they collide to produce, “the perfect storm,” creating devastating impacts. In this session, the co-occurring brain injury, mental illness and substance use disorder diagnoses will be discussed with a special focus on cannabis use - including assessment, symptoms, challenges faced in treatment, medications and interactions, neuropsychology, and treatment tools, methods, and techniques.

FR2 - STRATEGIES FOR BEST UTILIZATION OF BENEFITS Presented by: Kendell Myers, PT, DPT

BREAK With the changes in Auto No Fault reform, this presentation focuses on maximizing rehabilitative care with brain injury survivors under new utilization guidelines. Key points include the importance of educating patients and caregivers to incorporate movement patterns that can be practiced within the patient’s daily routine to foster superior outcomes in their life with optimal function. The presentation highlights the positive results that survivors achieve who complete functional daily Home Exercise Programs that are curated and advanced by skilled therapists

FR3 - IDENTIFYING AND ADDRESSING MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS Presented by: Linda Wells, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIST, and Amanda Lopez, PhD, LP, CBIS Communication barriers can be expressive, or receptive in nature, and can be devastating to the person living with them; suddenly not being able to express your feelings, or being misunderstood when able to verbalize. Individuals with communication challenges are at a greater risk for experiencing mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression. Without a holistic approach to treatment, we will overlook critical components of addressing communication barriers. In this presentation we will identify challenges and gaps in mental health supports for those with a communication barrier and necessary training for interdisciplinary teams as well as tools to support collaboration among providers. Case studies will be presented for advancing knowledge and promoting learning.

9:45 a.m.

FR4 - SEXUALITY AFTER TBI Presented by: Erin Skotzke, MOTk, OTR/L, CBIS People who sustain traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) report experiencing social disconnect, loneliness, and difficulty cultivating new relationships after injury. While we understand that a TBI can negatively affect relationships, there is a gap in research involving women’s experiences with sexuality after a TBI. Much of the literature describes physiological sexual dysfunction after TBI, sexual outcomes in males, or solicits the perspectives of couples after the male partner sustains an injury. Given the positive correlations between sexuality, quality of life, and wellness, it is imperative for TBI recovery that rehabilitation interventions facilitate healthy sexual, intimate, and romantic relationships after injury. However, healthcare providers are not asking about changes in sexual, romantic, or intimate relationships, nor providing education and intervention in these areas. In order to better understand and address this problem, we need to ask women about their experiences.

FR5 - INSOMNIA AND TBI Presented by: Jessica Bair, PhD, Neuropsychology

Sleep problems occur following 30-70% of brain injuries. Insomnia is one of the most common and treatable post-TBI sleep complaints and, if untreated, decreases quality of life. Sleep plays an important role in TBI recovery. Understanding the relationship between insomnia and TBI and being able to address poor sleep is critical in improving the well-being of patients. This presentation reviews the etiology and consequences of insomnia, the relationship between TBI and insomnia, and provides information on interventions for addressing insomnia. FR6 - AUTO NO-FAULT UPDATE Presented by: Wayne Miller, JD, Miller and Tischler, PC

FR10 - HOW TO SPOT FAKE SCIENCE Presented by: Robert Spencer, PhD, and Percival Pangilinan, MD

Quality of Life

Pseudoscience, defined as when non-scientific practices masquerade as science, often misleads consumers from opting for validated treatments in favor of untested and potentially harmful procedures. We will discuss pseudoscience in several of its forms and offer solutions to consumers and practitioners, alike. Our goal is to offer a balanced and informative discussion and to offer concrete advice for those interested in navigating the informational landscape.

FR11 - BRAIN INJURY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Presented by: Wendy Waldman, BSW, CBIST, and Sandra Ziebold, BA

FR12 - LOVE YOUR BRAIN YOGA Presented by: Lindsay Hunt, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIS, and Karley Brouwer, CTRS, CDP, CBIS The LoveYourBrain (LYB) Foundation developed a research-based yoga program for the TBI community to help improve emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being. Origami Rehabilitation partnered with LYB, the first clinical partnership in the country, to bring this program to survivors and caregivers in the Mid-Michigan area. This presentation discusses the benefits of yoga/meditation/mindfulness, will explore a breathing exercise and guided meditation, and outlines suggestions for incorporating yoga and meditation activities at home or within therapy sessions. This presentation will educate about the problem and prevalence of domestic violence related brain injury and will provide hope through solutions. We will delve into identification of the ways this happens, screening tools, and next steps toward possible diagnosis of acquired brain injury. We will also discuss common barriers that can arise when trying to assist individuals in a domestic violence situation that need assistance in identifying a potential acquired brain injury and navigating to a diagnosis, treatment, services, and supports.
