WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF SICKNESS MANAGEMENT?

MEDICAL CAPABILITY WHEN AN EMPLOYEE IS ABSENT LONG TERM

ABSENTEEISM WHEN AN EMPLOYEE HAS FREQUENT ABSENCES

HOWDOES STAFF ABSENTEEISM AFFECT MY COMPANY? When employees are frequently absent they can have a disruptive effect on both your staffing and productivity levels . Staff members may become overwhelmed, less productive and stressed. In turn this will affect your company’s productivity levels and may even lead to a loss of revenue.

HOWDO I DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN GENUINE ABSENCES

AND THOSEWHO ARE ‘PULLING A SICKIE’?

We recommend having a clear structure in place , for example the Bradford Factor, which balances the length and frequency of any absence to produce a point score . When certain absence point score thresholds are hit, disciplinary action should be taken.

ARE THERE ANY EXCEPTIONS TO THE BRADFORD FACTOR? Yes there are. Exceptions should be made for certain absences such as those relating to pregnancy and emergency care leave. You may also need to make adjustments in cases of absenteeism related to disability . You should always seek advice before taking action as getting this wrong can lead to automatic unfair dismissal and discrimination claims which carry unlimited compensation!

CAN I DISMISS AN EMPLOYEE ON LONG TERM SICKNESS ABSENCE? In cases of long term sickness, it may be that an employee’s medical condition means they are no longer capable of doing their job. When this happens, an employee may be fairly dismissed, but, before doing this, a full capability procedure must be followed.

FULL CAPABILITY PROCEDURE MUST BE TAKEN

WHAT IS A CAPABILITY PROCEDURE?

A capability procedure includes doctor reports, occupational health reports and the exploration of any potential adjustments to the employee’s role and their workplace. You must also explore any other roles that the employee may be able to undertake in the company. Getting this wrong can amount to discrimination and unfair dismissal so it’s important to ensure advice is taken from start to finish in order to avoid a tribunal claim.
