company updates

distracted driving initiative to drive without distractions what we are doing Our parent company, APi Group, is working to raise awareness about the risks to yourself and others when driving distracted. In 2017, more than 40,000 people lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents, with distracted driving being the leading cause. The APi Group family of companies is taking steps to lower this number through the Driving Without Distractions Initiative. To make this happen, APi will be implementing a zero use of electronic devices policy while driving in 2018 and has plans to deploy a control/ monitoring tool by 2019. Although we understand driving without distractions is not always easy and will require changing habits and routines, we strongly believe this is an important initiative that will hopefully inspire not only our organization, but those we work with.

safety week 2018 extinguisher training api nsg puts out fires

On May 7- 11th, we celebrated Safety Week which included challenges and educational activities to raise awareness. Sometimes we take safety measures for granted and choose to ignore them. It’s often not until something bad happens that we realize how important they are and why they’re in place. One activity our team participated in during safety week was an extinguisher training session. The New Brighton Fire Department came out to show us the proper way to put out a fire as quickly as possible. Our employees learned a lot, and many have thankfully never had to use one!

industry updates

kidde alarm recall First extinguishers, now alarms what you need to know

Kidde initiated another recall, but this time for smoke alarms. The impacted devices are Kidde Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms – Models PI2010 and PI9010. These smoke alarms are not tied to the fire alarm control panel and are not serviced by our team. You may have these installed at your site, but they would have been purchased and/or installed by someone other than our technicians. So although we can 100% confirm that these are not tied to our alarm system, we cannot confirm that they don’t exist in buildings. It is up to you to make sure your facility does not contain any of these faulty alarms. On a side note, if you have recently purchased a home or have changed out the smoke alarms at your home, you may want to have a look. These are commonly found at local home improvement stores and you may have purchased them prior to the recall. Why were these alarms recalled? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a yellow cap was left on during the manufacturing process that could potentially cover one of the two smoke sensors. This would hinder its only responsibility, to detect smoke and alert consumers of a fire. About 452,000 units were recalled on March 21st of 2018. Check out more information from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission or Kidde.

NFPA 3000 Provisional standard for active shooter/hostile events https://kidde-smoke-alarm-recallusen.expertinquiry.com/

what you need to know For the second time in The National Fire Protection Association’s 122-year history, they have issued a provisional standard to meet a pressing public safety need. This standard focuses on active shooter/ hostile event response and includes four main concepts: Whole Community, Unified Command, Integrated Response, and Planned Recovery. Another issue being addressed is the use of fire alarm pull stations by active shooters to bring people into common areas. The discussion has began of whether to remove pull stations all together, or put protocol in place to prevent a shooter from using them to their advantage. Read more about the discussion here!
