HIP, KNEE & LEG PAIN NEWSLETTER

Whether you have hurt your joints or have been suffering for a long time, seeing a physical therapist at Appalachian Physical Therapy, Inc. can help you return to a more active and pain-free life. Give us a call at: • Broadway: 540-901-9501 • Harrisonburg: 540-209-8977 • Pinehurst: 910-215-0541

Your hips, knees, and lower legs are tough—but injuries happen. Your hips and knees are your largest joints, supporting your body’s weight. They work in close coordination, giving us the mobility we need. Between arthritis, injuries and age, however, pain can flare up. If you’re experiencing hip, knee or leg pain, call us to schedule a closer look. Before you do, however, let’s examine the pain itself. What Causes Hip, Knee and Leg Pain? Hip, knee and leg pain are surprisingly common. Thus, their source can come from a variety of things. If you’re experiencing pain in any part of your leg, pinpointing the exact spot can help you determine the cause. Mayo Clinic has pinpointed several leading causes of hip, knee and leg pain. While many causes exist, the most likely are: • Arthritis

• Tendonitis • Pinched nerves • Osteoporosis • Cancer

While some causes are more severe than others, a physician can identify each. As the body ages, joints become inflamed. Cartilage may wear down, reducing the “buffer” between bones. In some cases, limited blood flow may cause bone tissue death, or necrosis. If you’re experiencing redness, inflammation and immobilized joints, the condition may be severe.

• Dislocation • Hip fracture • Sprains and strains

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

“The vertigo was gone!” “Soon after being slammed with a bout of Vertigo, Dr. Dan at Appalachian PT took his time to listen to my history, fully explained the malady, usual causes and what techniques he’ll use to get me back to “normal”. After one hour of Dr. Dan’s manipulation of my head position, the vertigo was gone, almost like “magic”. I had been a patient at APT in the past, and my wife is currently going there and we both highly recommend their professional services.” - Erik A, Weyers Cave, VA “Always centered around the client’s needs!” “I have seen Appalachian Physical Therapy on multiple occasions for my health concerns. The Customer first approach is always evident and the family atmosphere makes being treated relaxing. The new technology and treatment plan they propose is always centered around the client’s needs! I would highly recommend this office for everyone, they have become friends and I trust them.” - Robert W, Broadway, VA “Excellent experiences!” “Worked with their fine therapists twice over the years and have had an excellent experience both times. Spoke to my buddies about them last night at poker.” - Edward S, West End, NC “All caring people!” “Great therapists and staff and all caring people.” - Allen F, Pinehurst, NC While leg pain is noticeable by a slew of symptoms, several stick out. Aching or stiffness around the hip, groin, back or thigh may be a sign of deeper problems. A decreased range of motion can also be a sign of deeper problems which may later result in hip, knee or leg pain. Sometimes, inactivity can contribute to immobility—and later pain. If you’re limping, lurching or are experiencing bad balance, contact a physician. While some hip, knee and leg pains go away, those lasting longer than several months may be hinting at a deeper issue. How Physical Therapy Can Help. In many cases, physical therapy can help patients increase leg mobility. In doing so, they can stretch, flex and strengthen the muscles responsible for support. If a joint appears deformed, or if sudden swelling occurs, contact a physician immediately. A good physical therapy program can assist with post-operation treatment, too. If you’ve undergone treatment for osteoporosis, dislocation or a fracture, your therapist can help you reclaim full mobility—and a healthy lifestyle. From start to finish, we’re dedicated to your ongoing wellness. On every level, physical therapy serves to enhance the patient’s quality of life. We’re here to help, and we have years of experience backing every therapy option. Contact one of our providers today, and tell us about your symptoms.

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHTS

“Helped me increase my mobility!” “I have been to a few different physical therapy places, including on Long Island, New York and recently Washington DC, as I recovered from major back issues and surgeries. I have never experienced results as quickly as I have had since becoming a patient at Appalachian Therapy in Pinehurst, NC. The team of therapists and assistants are knowledgable, caring, and personable. The sessions are based on your needs. No one checks the time on the clock. My therapist Terry, has helped me increase my mobility making me much more positive about making a full recovery. I would highly recommend Appalachian to anyone who needs any of their variety of services!” - Marcie G, Southern Pines, NC “Spot on and works!” “The Therapist listens and acts according to what you are feeling. The treatment I have received has been spot on and works!” - Joan L, Harrisonburg, VA “No more back pain!” “Wish I would’ve gone here a lot sooner. For 2 years my 14-year-old daughter experienced back pain due to softball. After x-rays, a very expensive MRI, rest, chiropractor care, and physical therapy at another place nothing was resolved. Yet a few of them said it was muscle strain (for 2 years?!?!?). Went to Appalachian TWICE and thanks to Bill doing fascia on my daughter’s back, she has had NO MORE BACK PAIN!! It’s been several months but pain free still. This place is wonderful!” - Pamela K, McGaheysville, VA

DREW’S INTEREST IN SPORTS INSPIRES A NEW JOURNEY

When I was younger I was always interested in sports. I can remember waking up on Saturday mornings to watch Sportscenter highlights rather than the Saturday morning cartoons. I would go on to play baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, and even compete in a few youth triathlons up in New York with a family friend throughout the course of my childhood. One of the downsides to playing sports for a prolonged time is that injury becomes commonplace. I was fortunate enough to never sustain a serious injury, however I did watch numerous friends and teammates go through ACL tears and a variety of broken bones. I was always curious about what the procedure to recover from such traumatic injuries entailed. I would tag along to physical therapy sessions with friends when possible to see the types of things the therapists were doing. Towards the end of my high school career when it was time to begin thinking of the next chapter of my life I decided that I wanted to become a physical therapist. This decision ultimately played a major role in enrolling at East Carolina due to the excellent reputation for their PT program. As a kid growing up in Pinehurst, North Carolina I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to leave the small town. After about a year and half in Greenville, NC at East Carolina University I came to the realization of what a great place Pinehurst is to live. I loved my time at ECU and wouldn’t trade it for anything, but after 4 years of coursework I had to find an internship in order to complete my degree and felt it was my time to move on from Greenville. So I began my search for opportunities in Pinehurst. I spent a summer shadowing clinics in Pinehurst and always enjoyed the laid back atmosphere at Appalachian Physical Therapy. I alsoworked at a golf course where many of the patients frequently played and they raved of the quality of treatment along with the friendly demeanor of staff. I contacted a few local physical therapy clinics, but knew that Appalachian was at the top of my list. Fortunately for me, they accepted me as a student and I was able to work with Teri throughout the course of the internship and also gained valuable insight from all the therapists during that time. Shortly after the completion of my internship they offered to bring me on as a staff member while I was working on my applications for PT programs.

In some way, I am still very much like the younger version of myself. I still am highly interested in sports and love the thrill of competition that it brings. On cold or rainy days you can more than likely find me watching some sort sporting event. I mainly enjoy watching college sports such as football and basketball. However, since starting fantasy football with some friends in college I have invested more time in watching the NFL. I also really enjoy watching golf with my dad and grandfather when we get together Sunday nights for dinner. I have also been privileged enough to attend a wide range of sporting events. Since graduation I have attended the PGA championship at Quail Hollow, multiple college sporting events including football, basketball, and even playoff baseball in Greenville during the summer of 2018. Sincemakingmy retirement fromclub soccer at ECU upon graduation, I have begun playing much more golf. On a nice day here in Pinehurst you will probably find me out on a golf course. This June I will be moving to Lynchburg, Virginia where I will begin the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at the University of Lynchburg. I am very excited for the opportunity ahead of me and look forward to getting to use all the knowledge I have gained from the therapists at Appalachian. It will definitely be bittersweet leaving all the relationships I have formed with coworkers and patients behind, but I am looking forward to the journey ahead.
