Christmas Traditions My sister gets sausages in her stocking every year since she asked santa for sausages when she was 3. We have sausages and mimosas on Christmas morning. Christmas morning swim in Ballybunion.

Meeting in church on Christmas Day. Plenty of mulled wine on Christmas morning, secret Santa in the evening after dinner! Used to be going to the pub with my parents and the rest of the family on Christmas to my local. Jamaica ginger cake stuffing. Homemade mulled cider outside winter drinks. No longer done but couldn’t start Christmas lunch until my Grandma had watched the Queen’s speech at 3pm. Christmas Eve mass. “The Muppets Christmas Carol”. Watching “Elf” on Christmas Eve! Matching Christmas Eve pj’s. Christmas breakfast. Always have dinner with my parents - it’s my mum’s birthday on Christmas Day.

Go to Christmas Eve mass then go home get a take-away then watch a Christmas film. Family time and chill out, but my in-laws insist on doing a full reheated version of Christmas dinner and Christmas Day again on St. Stephen’s Day... ugh. Sandwiches and a big walk were the thing in my house. Much better. Ping Pong Tournament. Gift giving. A super-competitive at-home pub quiz after Christmas dinner, followed by kitchen disco, then everyone gets thrown out and my bit is done for another year!

22

Christmas 2021

Getting up early, and cooking some fillet steak on the pan, with a duck egg on top, served with some brown bread and hot cup of tea, this will keep you going until the dinner at 3pm. In Poland where I come from we start to celebrate on Christmas Eve - 24th Dec - with supper made of 12 dishes - in my home we still continue that tradition - no meat on this day - the most important dish is fish. Next day we do turkey & ham dinner as all in Ireland. Christmas sweaters to put up the Christmas tree. Making cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve! We each bring a small but funny extra gift and play bingo for the win ! Making the Christmas dinner one day before as my father’s birthday is 23/12/1936. Going to our local pub for an hour on Christmas morning.

Christmas Eve - mass followed by dinner with all of the family (local restaurant). Christmas Day - breakfast at my brothers home and

family dinner at mine. Playing a game called ‘Headbands’.

Never all be in the same room at the same time.... like Superman & Clark Kent! Giving each other evils over the dinner table and trying to work out am I really related to these people. Christmas morning workout followed by day of family, drinks and food. Games such as Monopoly, brain games, Scrabble and card games are traditionally a part of our routine. Shirt and Christmas tie! Spending time with family and friends!

23

Christmas Traditions

I get one of my friends who does not come too often (so kids could not recognize) coming over dressed up as Santa every year to give small presents to the kids on 24th during the dinner and promise presents under the tree next morning if they are good. Or to manage their expectation depending on the brief from parents. Done for last 14 years.

The adults saying they will open one present each late on Christmas Eve and then opening everything within 5mins.

Exchanging gifts after dinner.

Giving presents on Christmas Eve.

Start day with Christmas sea swim followed by Christmas dinner at home with elderly mother, and visits to relations - copious quantities of Christmas movies and biscuits!!

Arguing.

Turkey-Ham and all the trimmings, including brussels sprouts!

The first Ardmac #CycleforHope saw over 220 cyclists participate, and raised in excess of €25,000. This will be matched by Ardmac, bringing our total raised for Pieta House on World Mental Health Day 2021 to over €50,000. Not only did we do something practical and memorable to highlight Mental Health, we raised awareness and brought people together across our industry to do it. Massive thank you to everyone who participated, donated and volunteered on the day. This event would not have been the success it was without all of you.

It’s good to Talk

“A problem shared is a problem halved.” An old saying, but one that continues to ring true. Mental health is something that can affect anyone. It doesn’t discriminate between genders, professions or age. It is a particular problem within the construction industry, with 83% of construction workers having experienced a mental health issue. Ardmac’s Gavin King decided to take action and start an open conversation surrounding mental health. Gavin set up a Whatsapp Group called “It’s Good to Talk.” This group provides members with an outlet to discuss any problems they may be experiencing. Gavin is determined to put mental health on the agenda and to encourage people who may be struggling to talk. This Whatsapp group is a fantastic initiative and provides a friendly ear for those who need it. Gavin explains how the ‘Good to Talk’ Whatsapp came about, “The idea came from just trying to provide people with an informal means of reaching out. I am trying to break down the stigma with mental health and encouraging everyone to get involved, look out for each other and chat when they want.” Gavin thinks that there is room for the group to be expanded. “By setting up a simple ‘It’s Good To Talk’ Whatsapp group, we could have one on every project, supported by a trained MHFA. Simple drop ins on mates and friends who may be struggling can have a huge positive impact, just by asking if they are okay. Placing mental health on our health and safety and business agenda gives an opportunity to open up this conversation.” With his group chat, Gavin is creating a system of support for those who need it. ‘’As a sector, construction loses two people per week who take their own lives, it’s a massive issue. By creating a means of reaching out to people in similar situations it brings collective support and feeling of belonging which can be a huge support’’. If you would like to become a member of this group, please contact [email protected]. 32

Driving home for Christmas While you and your family are enjoying

everything that the festive season has to offer, it’s important to remember that safety doesn’t take a holiday. Driving is one of the most dangerous things we do every day and with busier roads and potentially hazardous driving conditions, this is especially true during Christmas time. A few things to always keep in mind: Be Prepared for the Irish Weather As changeable and unpredictable as our weather may be, there is one thing we can say for certain – Irish winters do not make for favourable driving conditions. Take extra precaution on the roads this winter. Lowering your speed and leaving some additional distance between you and the car in front can significantly lower your chance of being in an accident. Don’t Drive While Tired As exciting as the holiday season is, it can also be exhausting. Tiredness can seriously impair your driving ability. Driving while fatigued may even impair your ability behind the wheel as much as alcohol. In fact, it is estimated that driver fatigue is a contributing factor in one out of five driver deaths on Irish roads.

DRIVE SAFE Ardmac arranged Darren O’Connor to visit CLN5&6 Clonee to talk about the devastating effects poor driving can have especially when it involves excessive speed, fatigue and alcohol.

34

Christmas 2021

Check your tyre pressure and thread depth and make sure they are free from any damage to keep you gripped to the road. Make sure that your windscreen wipers are working and in good condition for the inevitable Irish rain. And check all lights on your car are operational and immediately replace any bulbs which are broken or fading.

Never Ever Drink & Drive Alcohol is one of the most common contributing factors in road related deaths in Ireland and while it should probably go without saying, under no circumstances should you ever drink and drive. While most people know the dangers of driving while drunk, we also recommend that you exercise caution the morning after. It takes the body one hour to process one standard drink. This means that if you have consumed a considerable amount of alcohol, you may still be over the limit the next morning. The effect could very easily be enough to increase your risk of a serious accident or falling foul of the law. Check your car is winter ready The changeable weather, the long and dark nights and the busy roads around Christmas time canmake for challenging driving conditions. And it is common at this time of year for drivers to travel longer distances than normal and on roads they are not familiar with as they visit friends and family. So to help keep you and your family safe on the roads, we recommend that you make sure your car is winter ready. Before heading off on your journey, you can make some simple checks to help ensure that you will make it to your destination safely.

The Dark Side of Blue Light

What is Blue Light? Blue light is a colour in the “visible light spectrum” that can be seen by the human eye. Blue light has a very short wavelength, and so produces a higher amount of energy. Studies suggest that, over time, exposure to the blue end of the light spectrum could cause serious long-term damage to your eyes. How to protect yourself Stay consistent and ensure you have enough time for sleep Sleep hygiene • Ensure bedroom is dark and cool. • Eliminate noise. Wear earplugs if necessary. • A bath or shower before bed is NOT recommended. Ensure a two hour gap.

36

Christmas 2021

• Do this up to 5 seconds in the same way, all the time focusing on your breath as it gets deeper and deeper. • If other thoughts come into your mind, notice them, let them go and then bring your attention back to your breathing. • You can also visualise your breath like waves crashing in on the sand - coming in, and going out. • This is a great technique to relax your body and therefore your mind which will help you to get to sleep and it’s better than counting sheep!! How to become a better sleeper! • Go to bed ONLY when sleepy, not just when tired or because it is ‘bedtime’. • Avoid napping during the day, not even for very short periods. (Careful! in front of the T.V. in the evening!) Napping eats into a normal complement of sleep. • Sort out the past day and do ‘to-do’ list for the following day. Make your wind-down period relaxing , knowing everything is sorted. • Exercise promotes quality sleep: but, no exercise too close to bedtime. A two hour gap, minimum. • Watch caffeine intake, this may include over the counter medications (read the labels!) as well as soft drinks. The effect of caffeine can last for several hours. • If you cannot sleep, get up out of bed and go into another room. Read, listen to music, do crosswords or jigsaws... NO computer screens, iPhone use, Kindles or iPads.

See the Light! • Biological rhythms are linked to light exposure. Our bodies know to close down as the sky darkens. • Blue light from all electronic devices IS detrimental to sleep. • Light your workspace... a dimly lit workspace will be harder to work in. • Use protective eye wear and reduce glare. • Limit your screen time for hand held devices before bed. How much Sleep do we need? • Average sleep need varies from person to person. • Known adult average is now 7–7.5 hours per night. • Newborns and infants sleep long periods... up to 16-18 hours as newborns. • Children need approx. 10 hours a night up to middle teenage years. • Early adults, (i.e. 17–25 year olds) need lots of sleep. • Older adults have different patterning: early morning wakes but napping in early/late afternoon. Mindful breathing instead of counting sheep! • Breathe in through your nose and hold for one second, then exhale through your mouth. • Then breathe in through your nose, hold for two seconds, then exhale for two seconds through your mouth.

37

Digital Disconnection

Digital Disconnection is dis-engagement fromwork and work-related devices, outside of normal working hours and during holidays. It also aims to enhance work-life balance and well-being. Some actions to help you digitally disconnect: Update your email signature or activate an out-of-office responsewith amessage similar to the following: “This email is being sent during my working hours but given the global structure of our organisation, you may receive it outside of your working hours. As such, please note that I do not expect a response or action outside your own working hours.” When you are “out of the office”, state the colleague of yours who has been designated as an alternative contact while you are away, share their contact details, as well as the length of time you will be away.

38

If you are having issues with disconnecting, share this with your manager in order tomanage this situation in the best way and/or help you to find a solution together. Christmas 2021

Use MS Teams status to show your availability and block your lunch / break times in your calendar. Always check the calendar of your colleagues before sending an invitation. Do not respond to emails after hours and don’t send them! Take time to stop and think about whether or not something needs to be communicated immediately or if it can wait until the morning. We work in different time zones. For this reason, some of us may receive work emails, messages, meetings, calls etc. outside of their usual business hours. Be aware of the attendees’ time zones and ensure, in so far as is practicable, to arrange the meeting during the working hours of the attendees and avoid setting them at lunch or break times, being respectful about the disconnection rights of others. Reduce the length of meetings to 25min or 45min. When arranging meetings, consider who should be in attendance and only invite those whose presence is necessary. Be mindful of ‘meeting fatigue’ and try to minimize unnecessary meetings. Don’t sync any business emails or work accounts to your own devices . It is very tempting to check a work email that pops up on your phone, and a simple notification can be a gateway to multiple emails.

Hybrid work, working for you

We all know that hybrid work is going to have upsides and downsides. If you’re about to transition into such an arrangement — by choice or requirement — you want to set a schedule that makes sense for you. Here are some questions to ask yourself: When do I feel the least motivated? You might use the in-office time to reinvigorate yourself when you’re feeling lower-energy. In the same way that going to the gym makes it easier to work out, going into the office can make it easier to get work done when you’re just not feeling it. Which meetings do I prefer to have in person? If you have project meetings that require problem solving or decision making, you may prefer to do those in the office. Schedule your in-office days for when those meetings are held. How can I maximize my energy? If you’re an introvert, it may be tough to do two days in a row in the office so spread your days out (Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday, for example). On the other hand, if you are looking forward to more socializing, consider going into the office multiple days in a row (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday). Click here for more
