BARRETSTOWN We channelled our inner Karate Kid/Mr Miyagi today! Spent the day with our client Mace in Barretstown giving the entrance avenue some TLC including a freshly painted fence. What a fantastic facility for sick kids and their families to have a break, some fun and a brief sense of normal life.

sea swimming ‘Just do it’ Yvonne O’Sullivan

I’m sure we all can remember the grim days of lockdown and the requirement to stay at home or at least within 5k of it. As a keen cyclist, the thought of cycling 5km legal loops of neighbourhood didn’t appeal so I had to look for other fresh air exercise activities. Having Dublin Bay just within my 5km limit I took to the sea and became “one of those new sea swimmers”! Within the last 12 months I have become a total convert and have gone from enduring the dip to really enjoying it. Yes, Dublin Bay is cold, there have been jelly fish and it’s not as clear as the Atlantic Ocean but it became my go to place during lockdown. I wasn’t alone, What’s App groups were formed to ensure safety and peer pressure and on

bright winter and spring mornings the numbers swimming in Clontarf resembled Salthill beach on a sunny bank holiday weekend. As distance restrictions relaxed, I managed to swim in different locations around Dublin Bay, north and south side and even as far as Howth! It became a sociable, fun and energising hobby. So what advice would I give to anyone thinking of making the plunge, just do it. It doesn’t become easy, it’s always a challenge, but without fail you will feel better after it and the colder the water the higher the feel-good factor (seriously!). Yes I do have a Dry Robe and it is great but you can’t beat having a filled hot water bottle in your bag and hugging it on the way home to a warm shower and a cup of tea!

‘I don’t think you need to be a master artist to enjoy making and creating’ Lisa Burke

Like most people, Covid lockdown made me feel stir crazy, so whenever I logged off from work I would reach for my trusty art supplies to help completely switch off. I studied art and graphic design as well as stained glass in college and I’ve just never lost the need to be creative or keep learning how to work in different mediums or using new techniques. I was halfway through a life drawing course in the Hugh Lane Gallery when lockdown came into effect, so I’m looking forward to things opening back up and getting back into new classes.

For portraits I usually work from pictures, mostly because it’s really difficult to persuade people to sit still long enough, mainly using watercolours, acrylics, graphite and charcoal (I haven’t got the patience for oil paints). I don’t think you need to be a master artist to enjoy making and creating, experimenting with whatever medium you choose, and there is no end to the benefits for your mental health – I’d recommend to anyone to give it a go!

Ard Mhacha Abu! Lisa Jennings

Being from Crossmaglen it was inevitable that the kids would be passionate about the GAA. Not only do they all play but they also love sitting watching the Saturday/Sunday Game with a big bag of snacks and of course a glass or two of wine for Me! We are lucky that my Mums House is right beside the pitches so they never have to go far to kick a ball and you would never see any of them without a ball or stick in the hand. The fact they missed out on a lot last year meant this year was super busy, so working from home has been a blessing in its own right, with majority of the Spring & Summer spent running across Armagh. Aoibhe played under 4 teams this year; U14Camogie, U12.5, U14 andU16 Ladies Football. Lauren played for 3; U12 Camogie, U12.5 Ladies Football and U11.5 Boys Football (of course she called it Mixed Gender).

They make me extremely proud on the field and get stronger year on year. Previously it had been a challenge to get to all their games with working in Dublin and not making it home until 6:30/7:00pm every evening. This year it was easy just to walk away from the laptop at 5:30/6:00pm to go watch them play, and if it was needed finish whatever work needed to be finished later that evening. This year Aoibhe was selected by the club to go trial for the Armagh Ladies Development Squad (proud Mammy moment!!). She unfortunately didn’t get picked this time. It was a daunting experience for her, training and playing with girls she doesn’t even know. Baffles me how they pick from an hours session on a pitch. I have no doubt she will be back and fingers crossed they will all take their Mother out for a day in Croke Park. Ard Mhacha Abu!

The ocean is like a second home. Jay Stacey

As an avid sailor and cyclist, the easing of lockdown has been welcomed this year. I have sailed since I was 11 - finishing on the podium of world championships around the world. Raced across oceans, spending weeks at sea. The ocean is like a second home. Being able to get back on the water, racing with friends in the glorious Irish summer has been welcomed back with open arms. Although many of our regular events are still missing, this year our team ‘Bon Example,’ still managed to wipe away the dust and win the dun laoghaire summer series by a single point. We’re now looking ahead to completing the same in our winter series and in upcoming events in 2022.

Cycling for me was always a fitness resource to support my sailing. But over the last 6 years, I’ve expanded on it. Taking up ‘bike packing.’ Bike packing is going away on your bike for several days ‘self-supported.’ Last year - between lockdowns, some friends and I completed the North coast of Scotland (NC500). In 4 days, we covered 500 miles by bike through the Scottish highlands. Tacking some long roads, big hills, and even worse weather. Working from home allows a vast amount of flexibility, when removing commuting time – For me it opens the doors to extra training hours before and after work - during your lunch break. With the next challenge, competing in my first Ironman in Switzerland next year, working from home has been nothing short of a benefit. 18

Heart Health

Your heart is the centre of your cardiovascular system. It is responsible for virtually everything that gives your body life, from the transportation of oxygen to the success of your immune system. Heart health is important at every age, so don’t be fooled into thinking that heart disease will not affect you. It is important to know your risk factors, including if you are a diabetic, over 50, or if you have a family history of heart disease. There are 5 main strategies for achieving a healthy heart. 1. Healthy Eating: A healthy diet can significantly reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. A well-balanced diet should include plenty of fruit and vegetables, some milk and dairy products, some meat, fish, eggs, beans and only some foods that are high in fat or salt. By having a varied diet, you are significantly reducing your risk of developing heart problems.

22

Oct 2021

tighten, blood pressure rises and senses become sharper. This can put extra pressure on your heart and cause problems. Learning how to deal with stress and effective stress management can reduce the risks associated with stress. 5. Regular Heart Health Screening: High blood pressure is often a silent symptom of heart disease and it can damage your heart and blood vessels. Regular heart health screening can tell you what your numbers are and whether you need to take action.

2. Physical Activity: Physical inactivity is a modifiable risk factor for the development of heart disease. By taking part in 30 minutes of physical activity every day you can improve heart health and reduce risks. In addition to protecting your heart, physical activity strengthens your lungs and helps them to work more efficiently, tones and strengthens your muscles, keeps joints in good working condition, promotes good mental health and may prevent the development of cancer. The benefits are endless! *Consult with your GP before commencing an exercise programme if you have an injury or underlying medical issue. 3. Going Smoke Free: Smoking increases your risk of coronary artery disease, particularly if you suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure or if you are overweight or obese. Smokers are more likely to suffer from a coronary event, such as a heart attack, than non-smokers. Smoking damages the lining of blood vessels and can cause blood clots. Quitting smoking and avoiding second hand smoke can help reverse heart and blood vessel damage and reduce heart disease risk right away. 4. Stress Management: Stress is needed in small amounts to keep us motivated and enthusiastic. However, too much stress can have a negative impact on your health and particularly, your heart. When you are stressed, your heart beats faster, muscles

Create a Plan to Help You Ease Back to the Office

Chances are your traditional day-to-day routine has been disrupted in the past year and a half. If you’re preparing to return to the office, how can you re-establish a routine? Start by picturing your workday from beginning to end, in as much detail as possible. When will you wake up? What and when will you eat? How will you commute? Write it all down — and then check your blind spots. Has the train schedule changed? Are the restaurants near your office still open? Don’t assume that anything is as you left it. Next, identify which parts of your pandemic routine won’t carry over easily into your re- entry transition — Exercise? Chores? Childcare? — and think about how they’ll fit into your new schedule. Consolidate your plan in one place that’s easy for you to check. Finally, go through your list and consider any logistics you need to settle for each item, such as renewing your parking passes or gym memberships, finding childcare backup, or preparing meals in advance. Things will be different when you start going back to the office. The better you prepare, the easier the transition will be.

Another Great Year of Golf had by Ardmac’s Golf Society

Our fifth year of the Golf Society came to a successful end last Friday, 24th Sept. We had 24 Golfers on the day, the weather was nice and the golf was great. Clontarfs tight fairways and challenging greens were too challenging for some but enjoyed by all. We have 55 members in the society and as previously noted, we welcome anybody looking to get involved, from beginner right up to Graeme Stuart standard. Winners on the day with a great score of 3 under were Peter Gough, Mike Fowler, Alan O Mahony and Jan de Groot. Peter has featured in most of his events attended and will be actively chasing next years Golfer of the Year title. They were closely followed on 2 under by Graeme Stuart, Conor Murray, Alex Coakley and Jon Doherty. In third place we had David Kavanagh, John Alexander and Dermot Mckenna with a good score of level par. Disaster struck again for the number 1. Golfer in the society, Graeme Stuart, in his shot at golfer of the year. Missing out on 1st place and / or his main event, closest to the pin, in Clontarf meant that for yet another year, the coveted Golfer of the Year prize has alluded him. Like his beloved Mayo, its back home empty handed and back to drawing board for another tilt at the top in 2022. Graeme is our most consistent golfer and will no doubt reach the summit over the coming years. Chris Fitzpatrick and Michael Quinns ambitions for a maiden win faltered with both hot shots paired together on the day and bringing up the rear to win the wooden spoon. Zero points on the day hurt their ambitions. Ian Madden scraped through for Golfer of the Year this year. Thank you to Darragh ‘Boom Boom’ Walsh for a brilliant year at the helm as Captain. He gave it his all and lived up to his reputation as a man that makes things happen. Thanks Daz. Best of luck to Michael Quinn next year, we’re hoping you can fill the big boots of all past captains and continue to bring the society forward.
